Super quaint shop that's got an extensive collection of religious/philosophical texts, Buddhist symbols, and Tibetan clothing/art. The prices are a little on the higher end (I spent $60 on my first visit for a book, two mala bracelets, and a print), but I didn't mind because it was supporting a local business. The shop owner escaped Tibet at age 7 and immigrated to the US after living for years in India. They've got a great knowledge of local Buddhist community gatherings/groups, as well as information about how you should plan your trip if you ever travel to Tibet. A must-visit in the NorthShore area for any of the sangha -- beginners or long-term practitioners-- as well as folks interested in learning about other cultures. read more

Cool store with a cool proprietor, a Tibetan woman who operates this shop more as a labor of love and outreach than as a profit center --when I visited, she gave my friend some free books and videos, and talked at length about her experience and the current conflict with China. Besides that, there's plenty of interesting Tibetan bric a brac, incense, books and an extensive selection of unique scarves, shirts, etc. Nb: As noted above, this place is a labor of love, not Starbucks. Tibet Gift is a unique resource for Tibetan and Nepalese imports, particularly craft items, books and music. If you're a vajrayana Buddhist or Bon student, this place is a 'must visit.' They stock handmade practice items, thangkas and some other hard-to-find Buddhist geegaws that I've not seen offered anywhere else. No phurbas, no kartivankas, though; lots of nice dorjes and other Buddhist implements. (The place to shop for some of the more wrathful items is Architectural Revolution, one of the Alley stores, on Clark in Chicago.) Tibetan-owned and operated, the Tibet Gift storefront is a focal point for cultural studies of the Himalayan region, Buddhist classes and events. Despite the name, TibetGift seems to focus more on education and the promotion of Tibet than on trinkets. They offer events and programs open to the public throughout the year on Tibetan medicine, music, arts, spirituality, etc. The owner (?), from Tibet himself, is extremely knowledgeable and very willing to chat, and is just one of the sort who seems to have led a fascinating life. This quiet little shop is actually a rich Evanston resource for anyone interested in Tibet, Buddhism, Zen, etc., and doesn't know where to start. Also of note: They offer Tibetan language classes!!! Sessions seem informal and there is no rigid schedule, but apparently you should join the email mailing list to receive information (go to the store and fill out a form). read more

Sometimes I go in to the shop just because I want to take in the beautiful, calming smells and hear the gentle music. The owner, Tashi, always is a joy to see. He is so helpful and friendly and knows everything there is to know about Tibetan culture. I believe at one point he was, or he may currently be, somehow affiliated with the Dalai Llama community. Tibet Gift, and Tashi, are the genuine thing. There are always really interesting classes going on that you can find out about in the store or through their newsletter. The owner worked with the Dali Llama for some time in his past and has such a wonderful selection of goodies to make any Buddhist smile and almost reach nirvana. Loaded with Books on Buddhism, Yoga and various Dharma practice items. Also included are Mala's, jewelry, bags and apparel. Really a gateway to show people here in the West what Tibetan life and Culture is all about! The owner Tashi has worked tirelessly to help Tibetan people and preserve Tibetan culture and he deserves a medal for all he's done! We are so blessed to have such a store in our area.
