Dr. Tichenor and his Nurse Practitioner, Mary, are second to none. I was referred to this practice by my Internist as a result of sinus inflammation. Dr. Tichenor was the only doctor that I had seen over the course of a very frustrating year to properly diagnose the cause of my sinusitis. His level of care and knowledge are unparalleled. Each appointment I can expect to spend a few hours in his office getting a full workup and evaluation. Furthermore, any procedure or testing needed was able to be performed right in his office. I've experienced years' of chronic sinus problems. I had two previous surgeries (deviated septum and full endoscopic sinus surgery). I'd seen doctors in WV, Pittsburgh, Washington DC, and Baltimore before finding Dr Tichenor. I had a serious complication in surgery at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore - a cerebral sinal fluid leak in the brain. I've been miserable ever since. All of the doctors I'd seen before Dr. Tichenor performed the same cookie-cutter procedures (i.e. doing what insurance companies would pay for). All had 15-minute visits; none properly diagnosed a long standing hospital acquired infection. Dr Tichenor was the ONLY doctor of the dozen I've seen who properly diagosed the infection -- taking samples of the infection from deep in my ethmoid sinus and sending them to Quest Lab for identification of the bacteria and sensitivity testing to see what would kill the particular pathogens. He also ran separate tests for fungal infection. All other doctors simply handed out 2-week prescriptions for the latest "wide spectrum" antibiotic. Dr. Tichenor refuses to hand out antibiotics without confirmation of the underlying infection / effectiveness of the antibiotic to kill it. Dr. Tichenor explained that the particular hospital acquired infection I had would take at least 3 months to treat; and that all the previous 2-week stints I had on antibiotics only made the infection I had stronger by not killing it. Dr Tichenor also spent LOTS of time with me, 3 to 4 hours per visit, reviewing every page of the large stack of medical records I brought with me - even showing me how some of the doctors wrote their records to avoid a lawsuit from me. He offered suggestions for other health problems that affected my sinus health (namely, GERD acid reflux). Its been several years' since I've visited Dr Tichenor (live too far away); I've since learned that his procedure for testing / identifying infections used to be standard process in America --- until the HMOs said it was "too expensive" and doctors went on to pass out antibiotics like they were Halloween treats. Dr. Tichenor is the ONLY doctor I've seen who properly diagnoses infections with testing. I highly recommend Dr. Tichenor to anyone who is suffering from sinus issues, allergies or immune disorders. I had suffered with chronic sinusitis for years and was brushed off by so many doctors who just gave me another dose of antibiotics or worse...those who told me it was all in my head. Then I found Dr. Tichenor and he changed my life. He found the root causes of the constant sinus infections and targeted a treatment plan to address them. He listened and understood my concerns and fears about various treatment options and the side effects and created a treatment plan I felt comfortable with and one that worked. By the time a chronic sinusitis sufferer finds Dr. Wellington Tichenor's website, they're desperate for a cure. Perhaps the good doctor realizes this and has no qualms about charging $800 a visit. I was that desperate patient today. Told the $800 covered a four-hour visit with full evaluation, I rationalized that it might be worth it if I could discover what was making my life such hell. But then I met the actual dog guarding the gates of hell, Cerebrus, in the form of Dr. Tichenor's office manager today. She is despicable, lacking in compassion, and has no excuse working anywhere near sick people desperate for hope. For starters, she assured me when I made my appointment three weeks ago she would coordinate benefits with my health insurer, to see if they could be billed directly. When I arrived, I learned that was not done. She glibly lied, saying she couldn't get in touch with them (e.g., "I never got through to a human.") Not able to reach a human? In three weeks? Really? I confirmed with my primary care doctor's office manager later today what horsesh*t that was. So strike one: it looked like I would be out of pocket $800 for today's visit. Strike two: I arrived for my visit at Dr. Tichenor's (incredibly grungy/dirty-looking) Park Ave., NYC, office a half-hour late. Yes, that was on me. Although I allowed myself a comfortable 1.5 hours' extra cushion to get into the city for my visit, I underestimated how terrible gridlock would be today--far worse than normal. So I arrived for my 1:30 appointment at 2 p.m., completely stressed, frazzled, and apologetic, and having called ahead to warn them--and willing to pay for the half hour out of pocket. But that wasn't enough for Cerebrus. Oh no! I was to be punished, made to sit in the waiting room at least an extra hour-and-a-half if not more beyond my appointed time--and to pay out of pocket for that, too, apparently! I don't even know what harm was done my being one-half hour late as other patients were still in with the doctor and with the nurse practitioner (the only two medical professionals on staff) when I arrived, so I would have been sitting in the waiting room that half hour anyway. But at any rate, by 3 p.m., as I cooled my heels in the waiting room, another patient breezed in, was greeted cheerfully, and shown in to see the good doctor. Cerebrus informed me that regardless of when I ultimately made it in to see the good doctor, I would be charged the full $800--AND the office would close promptly at 6 p.m. Meaning that if the doctor only saw me for, say, one hour, I would STILL presumably be charged $800, and then have to come back for a follow-up $800 visit to have whatever tests weren't done on the abbreviated first visit. Needless to say, I wasn't THAT desperate. I walked out, and will never return. Did I mention how rude Cerebrus was? She seemed to take glee in her powerful gatekeeper role. Ugh. I saw Dr. Tichenor (looks grumpy and 3x older than his photo), but didn't meet the great man personally. If Cerebrus is the caliber of employee he keeps, I'm not sure I'd have faith in his quality of care. read more

Dr. Tichenor portrays himself as an allergist. He is not a Board Cerified Allergist. He submitted a $4,000 cost for an endoscopic exam to my insurance company somehow coding it as an operation. I had had that exam before and he was about 10times any other doctor. Have no idea what he was doing. He is a brillant marketer putting some good research into a newsletter on sinusitis that he writes, but really has no particular skills. He wanted to conduct a breast exam for sinus problem and would not explain why other then that's what he does. Years later I realized it was so he could bill the insurance company. It was such a bizarre experience I could not report whether he is a good, bad or just oportunistic doctor. read more

I suffered from years of chronic sinusitis before I found Dr. Tichenor almost 15 years ago. I was ready to leave NYC it was so bad. I'd seen all the experts at all the best hospitals who told be there was nothing to be done. Dr. Tichenor changed all of that. He spends a significant amount of time with you to understand your issues. Each time I've had a problem that won't go away he found a solution. Sometimes it took a while but eventually he solved it. He's very dedicated to his patients and if you're really not feeling well will usually always fit you in that day. He has a good network of experts if there's something he can't solve. e.g., I had to have sinus surgery and the doctor he referred me to is truly amazing. Dr. Tichenor has helped me tremendously with my sinus problems when other doctors could not. He literally spent hours with me listening to my issues and created a plan of care that was personalized to me. So many other doctors are so quick to recommend surgery if they don't have answers. Dr. Tichenor has been my doctor for over 30 years. In the early years, he was my internist. A nurse who had previously worked with Dr. Tichenor, recommended him to me highly at that time, because I had been suffering from an intestinal parasite infection that had been unsuccessfully treated by another physician. Her recommending me to Dr. Tichenor has been the best recommendation that I've ever received! Under his care, I recovered from my intestinal parasite problem, and in the years that followed, I used Dr. Tichenor as my primary care physician. No longer acting in that capacity, he now specializes in allergy, asthma, and persistent sinus problems, for which I am currently under his care. Through all these years, I have always found the doctor and his office staff to be extremely attentive and caring, I have never felt rushed during an office visit. Dr. Tichenor asks detailed questions to get an accurate understanding of your medical problem(s), and solicits your questions about any treatment recommendations he makes. The office is very well managed. During office hours, a human always answers the phone, not a machine. For a serious concern, the doctor and his office staff attempt to get you into the office as soon as possible. The biggest challenge can be that Dr. Tichenor is not in-network with any insurers, so, without out-of-network insurance, treatment can be expensive. However, the doctor and his staff work hard with out-of-network providers to get the coverage that is due you. I would be remiss if I did not specifically mention the doctor's wonderful assistant, Mary Youch, NP. She is bright, caring, thoughtful, and efficient, doing her best to get you in and out of the office when you are in a rush. Lastly, but not least, in an emergency after office hours, the doctor's answering service has always been success in communicating my concerns to the doctor promptly, and the doctor himself has gotten back to me expediently when necessary. In sum, I feel very grateful to Dr. Tichenor, and his thoughtful and responsible office staff for their attentiveness and caring for me over all these many years! read more
