Walked in on a random rainy evening and found a long line, which makes sense. Also, they're famous for their Eismarillenknödel. I tried the coffee ice cream and it was quite possibly the best I had in Vienna. This place is truly a must visit. Service was fast, friendly, and efficient. The ambiance feels like an Austrian diner tucked into a quiet suburban neighborhood which is super charming and adds to the appeal. Best ice cream in our entire trip, and we visited twice in as many days. Very easy to get to from Reumannplatz subway station. Apparently it's very popular with the locals - busy throughout the day even during the week. Vienna has been holding out on us. This diner styled ice cream spot is a must visit. It's been serving up desserts since 1952. Definitely get the Eismarillenknödel, an apricot filled dumpling that are as iconic as they are delicious. These puppies are patented. How they came to be? Initially conceived as a creative way to use up leftovers, it's hard to imagine now that this iconic treat began as a culinary afterthought. Pronounced "tishy." The restaurant is only open 5 months of the year. This is a nice, old-fashioned looking ice cream shop with plenty of clientele. Fortunately, on my visit, there was not a line waiting to get in as it had just stopped raining on a Monday evening. As suggested, I had the Eis-Marillen-Knodel which is a creamy, ice-creamed filled hole with apricot filling (see photos). It was absolutely divine! The menu is extensive. It would help you to review it and have an idea of what you want upon arrival. Many at other tables were sharing large ice cream-filled desserts. Bring an appetite because you will need it. During my stay in Vienna I became a bit of a gelato connoisseur. I spent a lot of time researching the best gelato in the city via eating gelato every day at every chance I had. My hard work paid off, for after eating scoop after scoop I was able to narrow it down to my all-time favorite shop AND favorite flavor: Tichy's Mango. This fruity flavor is incredible. Close your eyes, take bite, and you'll be asking yourself: am I eating ice cream, or the juiciest mango off a tree? It's THAT good...no, the BEST! I'd argue that it's the most refreshing iced treat one could have in the city. In fact, I have yet to have another gelato anywhere else that comes remotely close to Tichy's mango. It would be a crime if you didn't hop on the U1 and find out for yourself. read more

Absolutely the best tasting AND best value for ice cream in all countries I have travelled: US, Czech, France, Germany, Canada. 1.90 for three scoops on a cone. The pistachio, banana and chocolate flavors are perfect. The kiwi flavor is on the tart side but very refreshing. Staff are nice, friendly, and yet efficient. Good thing our hotel is far from here. Tichy was our favorite ice-cream cafe in Vienna. Don't be put off by their location. It is not right in the center of the city, and you would have to take the red line U1 to get there. They are located right next to the metro station Reumannplatz. I would have to say that this place is popular and very crowded. The best time to visit is during the week days before 5 p.m. if you want to get a table. Otherwise it is very likely you will be waiting for this table forever or sharing it with strangers. English is not spoken much by the staff, but they are very friendly and they will give you a menu in English. The menu has pictures of everything they offer, so it was very easy for us to order. They also sell ice-cream to go. I think it was 1 euro and 60 cents for three scoops. read more

I can't imagine anyone not liking Tichy Ice Cream Parlor. This legendary institution on the Reumannplatz in Favoriten in South Vienna is one of the traditions of warmer weather in Vienna. There are two indoor areas and two takeaway counters so it actually serve a lot of people at one time which is good because there are usually a lot of people at Tichy's.. One of the classics they are especially known for is their Eis-Marillen Knödel. This vanilla ice cream and apricot concoction inside a dumpling with a tasty bread crumb & powdered sugar coating deserves its fame. Best ice cream in Vienna! You can sit down at one of their charming, old fashioned ice cream parlor tables and order a fancy dish, or stand in line and get some scoops in a cone. Either way, you'll get a 'special' experience--the place is always crowded and joyful--and you'll get great ice cream. There's outdoor seating in the summer and two different parlor rooms to sit in. The pink one in the back is a little quieter, less touristy, and I think prettier. Not near the city center, but you must make the trip. Go not just for the ice cream, but the experience! read more

I have been here twice, and never have I been disappointed. Yes, this place is chaos on a summer afternoon with children squealing and ice cream cones dripping, but it is such a lovely tradition that should not be missed! Their flavors consist of old favorites and daily specials so you are sure to find one that suits your tastes. Their 'Eisbomb' is an old classic (my Omi had them for her birthdays as a child) and are well worth the very reasonable 5 Euros and change. I would recommend getting your ice cream to go and walking across the narrow street into Reumannplatz, sitting down on a bench and people watching. When you visit Tichy, try their Coup Helen. It has vanilla ice cream, pear compote, roasted almonds, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream. With just one spoonful, I became a fan. The texture and richness of the ice cream was superb and the flavor of the chocolate was just the way I like it - moderately sweet, verging on dark. Mixing the pear with vanilla and chocolate freshens up this classic ice cream combo while the fruits and the almonds add variety to the typical creamy texture of ice cream. Best ice cream on Vienna! When you go in make sure to check if they have Ashanti that day and if they do- get it! It's a sort of peanut butter flavor made in heaven and then sent down. Mix it with some chocolate and you're in dreamland! Strawberry and chocolate is another fantastic combo here. You can so not go wrong ordering an Eismarillenknödel. Ok, let me just say that I think Austria is the ONLY country in Europe were you can walk your butt off during the day sightseeing, and still gain weight. Tichy is certainly one reason! We were staying in the Innere Stadt, so when my husband said we HAVE to find this place and have ice cream, I said ok even though I was stuffed to the gills from dinner. SO we took the underground to the end of the line and lo and behold we got off on 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica, well maybe not quite as hip(anyone who has been to both will understand). We got a little confused, walked the wrong way, thankfully the Austrians are quite helpful. What's with the line out the door! must be good. Tichy is a CLASSIC icecream parlor complete with the candy striped servers. we ordered a few things because my hubby needs to taste everything. I personally was digging any thing with erdbeer (strawberry). Is it my imagination or do austrian strawberries taste different? We also got one of the snowballs. One note, they have little containers of waffle cone pieces (think breadsticks) on the table. My husband thinking, Oh look snacks,gobbled down a few only to find out they keep count and charge at the end. So I suppose you might want to rein in the kiddies on that. Excellent! read more

The best "Eis" that I've ever tried in Vienna. Klassiker is the Eismarillenknödel, but the Himbeer-Mohn-Knödel is also great. For me it is always a measure of quality how the whipped cream is, if it is only a cheap spray or really good quality/freshly whipped.
