Every time we're here staying in Ocean Point, we make a point to visit Tidal Transit Kayak Company for a guaranteed great time on the water. The past two times we've been here, we've done their guided wildlife kayak tour which includes a stop on Ram Island with snacks. This summer, given the COVID issues, they are unable to offer any guided tours but you can go down to their dock and rent stand up paddle boards or kayaks (single or double) and they will provide you with waterproof maps of the harbor so you can paddle to various locations and explore on your own. They also provided us with waterproof sacks and life vests. It was all first come first serve (I couldn't reserve the kayaks ahead of time) but they have so many it's not an issue. They said they do have more demand for paddle boards from time to time. We rented three double kayaks and wore our masks, as did the staff, until we shoved off the dock. We did the recommended kayak path to Burnt Island and walked around the island a bit before we headed back around the bay. In truth, two of our party decided to just float in the bay in their kayak and didn't paddle anywhere. All in all it was a wonderful and different way to experience the bay by kayak than the guided tours and at the end, they gave each of our teenagers/young adults a Tidal Transit Kayak sticker for their water bottles/laptops. I tried to pay for them but they gave them to us for free - and we will gladly advertise their company for them! They go through everything about the routes you can take and the best way to go to get the best experience. I highly recommend this company. My son and I rented a tandem kayak for our first ever sea kayak experience. The folks at Tidal Transit couldn't have been nicer as they explained everything we needed to know before heading out. (You don't have to be expert on the Law of the Sea--just follow their common sense advice when cruising in the harbor, etc.). We had a great time exploring the shore line by the Burnt Island Lighthouse and other areas before heading back to the dock. (I'd definitely recommend a 2-hour rental--time passes quickly once you're out there in the open water). A good time was had by all, and we'll be back for more fun the next time we are in town. read more

My best friend and her daughter visited us in Maine this weekend for the first time since we moved here, and we all wanted to kayak for a bit before they went home. I have been to a few rental places in the greater Portland area, but thought it would be nice to go a bit north to see another part of Maine. We wandered into Tidal Transit Kayak without much of a plan, but the staff was immediately friendly and helpful and answered questions we didn't even know we had. Travis, Dan, and Jen (not sure if I got her name right) gave us a thorough navigation walk-through, a map of the harbor, and a quick kayaking how-to overview before we got on the water. They were all patient and good-humored and just made us feel comfortable. (And Dan was super patient and helpful getting us into our boats! A lot of laughing and selfie-taking.) All gear, including dry bags, was included in the very reasonable rental fee. I should mention, too, that I am 6'2" with really long legs and a wide tush and they had a kayak that I was totally comfortable in for the entire 3-hour trip; I've had different experiences at other rental sites. We paddled out to the lighthouse on Burnt Island -- which is a gorgeous, picture-postcard spot with trails and gardens and picnic tables and even a restroom -- and spent a wonderful, happy day on the water. We all have limited kayaking experience but never once felt nervous, even with the 14-year-old in our group wandering off to explore the coastline; Boothbay Harbor seems a bit calmer than Portland Harbor, perhaps because of the little islands breaking up the waterway. It was really a perfect girls' day, and the TTK staff and equipment and preparation made it all possible. I'll definitely return and recommend it to anyone. Next time we'll try the Sheepscot Wildlife tour with my sons, or maybe the Sunset tour with my husband...or both. Thank you for a perfect day! read more

I wanted to treat my dad to some outdoor time on a recent vacation, but wasn't sure what to do, since he has bad knees. The guides here were terrific and patient in helping him get comfortably into the kayak for a half day wildlife tour, and wouldn't take any payment until he felt sure he'd be able to complete the trip without discomfort. The trip itself was terrific, with 2 knowledgable and friendly guides pointing out sights and creatures including seals and sea birds, and a nice break and snack on Ram Island. Good luck with Sarah. This condescending, snappy princess can take the fun right out of the experience with her un- pleasant attitude. I almost gave her the business and went somewhere else. To save my family of humiliation I behaved. It's a shame to have someone representing someone else's establishment treating people the way she does. I own a business and SHE WOULD NOT work for me! I rarely review non-restaurant businesses, but this place deserves 5 stars. The staff is very pleasant and friendly. Most of my group was new to kayaking, so they went over some safety tips and instructions on how to kayak. We all were helped into our kayaks into the water. One person in the group fell into the water and the guide was there to help him up right away. This was months ago when I went so I can't recall the guide's name, but he was super nice and gave us a full tour of the harbor. Spent the entire afternoon just kayaking around the harbor and everyone in the group had a great time. Highly recommend this place, especially if you're at the beginner level. These guys will take care of you with a smile and a warm welcome. read more

Awesome experience! The crew was super knowledgeable and friendly. The equipment is nice and new. We enjoyed the paddle out to the shipwreck and back...(about an hour). We did a tandem kayak which worked out well for us. The waves in the cove might have been tough for paddle boarding. I would recommend! read more

This is a tricky business to master: varying ages, experience, and physical capability levels of eager kayakers looking for a good time. But these folks have mastered it - guides are well prepared, laid back, yet super-aware of everyone's movements. They're on top of the situation without "schooling" anyone. And they're full of good local history & lore, ecology, geology, ornithology gems. I went on a big (17 people!) wildlife afternoon tour with my son and folks of all ages yesterday in the Sheepscot river and it felt very personal with the conversation and casual attention and flow. They've got it down - Safety, customer attention, you name it. Well worth every penny! read more

This season after renting bikes from them for four years they tried to stick us with bikes that didn't fit! We called to reserve a month ago and walked in yesterday to confirm our order for two 19 inch bikes to be delivered to Bayville in the evening. Instead they brought us two 17.5 inch bikes, saying they were out of 19 inch ones. I told them I'd try the bike. I did and it simply didn't work for me. So I called and said to pick them up. The manager was incredibly nasty in that he said that 1. They don't take reservations (they took ours a month ago) and 2. They never promise a specific bike. What BS! That means they could show up with a kids bike and expect me to accept it . Needless to say, Tidal Transit has a monopoly in Boothbay Harbor. Clearly, if you need a bike you should be willing to suck it up and pay $20 a day, per person, for a bike that isn't what was promised, doesn't fit, and therefore is DANGEROUS to ride. If you're reading this, Tidal Transit, come pick up your bikes. We're not riding them. And we object to the way you do business. read more

This is an excellent place for renting kayaks in Boothbay Harbor (note they have another location, too). Great, stable kayaks - we love the tandems - and they get you ready and in the water quickly. We've utilized them multiple times each summer for the past several years, and every time it's been a blast! They will watch your stuff, hook you up with dry bags, and be totally fair in all aspects as far as I've seen. These are good guys, and it's a pleasure to rent from them. We spent a Sunday afternoon on the Sheepscot Wildlife Tour and enjoyed our fill of ospreys, seals, tremendous scenery and a Maine Guide who had the natural history of the place down. The sea kayaks were in great shape. We rode in Neckys and Borealis kayaks with rudders. The welcoming and accommodating folks at the shop, from the owner, Travis, to his assistants, really enhanced the experience. read more

Very nice guys, valuable lessons for kayak-nubs, decent rates. Maps, charts, dry-bag for valuable papers, life-vests all provided! Good kayaks with rudders, not the kind you sit on top of and steer by furiously paddling backwards on one side. Best way to go see a light-house on an island only reachable by boat. My wife and I had a really good experience paddling about the back river portion of Sheepscot River near Boothbay on Labor Day. She and I are in our early 60s, reasonably fit but certainly capable of being worked too hard by a younger guide, as were a few of the others in our random group that day, but this was never a problem, as he (Adam I believe) worked out a circuit route that fit our abilities. I'm pretty sure a younger and more capable group would have caused him to pick a more challenging route. A nice stop at Ram Island for snacks and "recharging" made the pace just right for us. He also was constantly conscious about our safety. It's not a cheap way to spend an afternoon but, considering the equipment and transport and labor, was reasonably priced. read more

Rented two kayaks and a bicycle from them (the latter for several days). Everything was in great condition. They gave good instructions, maps of where to paddle and ride, all equipment. I have rented from them several times. I have used other companies and shipped my own bikes, but I'm not doing that anymore. Next year, I will pick up a bike and maybe a kayak from them immediately when I arrive. read more

Rented two kayaks for the morning. The staff was extremely friendly. They gave us a grab loop for the amount of time we were looking to spend. I went on an overnight trip with the kayak company. I was really excited to kayak and camp! Unfortunately my experience was not all I had hoped for. My guide Adam was rather passive aggressive. He chose a route too difficult for my group and I and made rude comments that we were too slow and falling behind schedule. It was very disheartening because this was my first experience kayaking. On the other hand we had another guide named Abe who was very patient with us, and made the experience much more bearable. I will not be returning but I hope that this review is helpful for future trips or considerations when choosing a weekend activity. read more

There is nothing better than giving your money to a business like this one (except of course the wonderful Kayak adventure that ensued). My boyfriend and I called up Tidal Transit with an idea that we wanted to go kayak-camping in Boothbay Harbor. And we wanted it to be almost free. The extremely friendly and helpful person who answered the phone told us everything we needed to know, didn't try to upsell us to (what I'm sure are amazing) one of their guided, overnight trips, and didn't even request we make a reservation. When we showed up the morning of our planned excursion (which was several months later) they were just as helpful (I mean seriously we loved them, we wanted them to come hang out on our island). They gave us all the tips, dry bags, gloves, deck compass, and maps, all included with our 24 hour tandem kayak rental which cost just $75. They sent us on our way to the most beautiful public island with an established campsite that just blew our minds from start to finish. read more

However, they were extremely accommodating and we ended up renting boats for close to 2 hrs and were charged for just 1 hr. Staff was great, boats were easy to paddle and tracked well. This place goes above and beyond in every way. This threesome, Travis, Adam and Wyatt will make sure all your needs are met. I happened to have a camera and the battery was dead. Travis quickly advised that Adam will be here soon and he felt positive they could rectify my dilemma, as we have a wedding to attend to in Castene.
