Favorite chicken taco ever! The salsa was HOT! The beans have a little thicker texture and the type of cheese adds a nice flavor. Rice was good and not your run of the mill Mexican restaurant. Stopped by this this small mom and pop grocery store to pick up some tacos on the way to the beach, after reading some great reviews on the place. It was a small hole in the wall shop, away from any of Lake Geneva's main attractions. Ordered 2 carne asada tacos and 1 carnitas- American style (lettuce, tomato, and cheese) to go, for $7 and some change. Service was good and fast. The tacos were okay. They just weren't as flavorful as I had hoped. The meat was bland and could've definitely used more seasoning and I personally like my carnitas a bit more on the crispier side. I'm not really a spicy, type of person, but added some salsa to my tacos to give it more flavor. I'm willing to give this place another try, if I was in the area. This is an authentic Mexican eatery in the back of a store, less than 10 minutes north of downtown Lake Geneva. Don't expect much in terms of aesthetics or ambiance, in fact they only have three tables if you choose to eat there. Yet their food is amazing!! Fresh, full of flavor, and beats the numerous nicer Mexican restaurants that we frequent. My husband said this was the best, and I'd have to agree. We had carnitas and steak tacos, Mexican style with onions and cilantro, topped with cheese, a burrito, and guacamole and some really good chips. Small little mexican restaurant/store, but the food there is delicious. About a 5-10 minute drive north of downtown Lake Geneva. I did pass it up once when I tried finding it because it's kind of a small place, so you do have to keep an eye out for it. There carne asada is delicious and you can't beat ordering that whether it's tacos, burritos, tortas...whatever. Can't beat their prices either. I ordered a carne asada burrito, a carne asada torta, a quesadilla, a chorizo taco, a carnitas taco, 2 bags of chips, gummi worms and a Mexican candy.....all for 20 bucks and some change.....all that food fed my wife, my son and I. The only downside is the inside of the store is a little small and cramped, with that said, this is not a place for large groups, but perfect for carry-out. Wow finally authentic Mexican cuisine. One of the best places I've been to. We were seated immediately. Bare in mind the actual restaurant is within a market store. The menu has a wide variety of choices from tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. I ordered two tacos, marinated pork, and they were crazy good. Also you can order American style or Mexican style. American has tomatoes, cheese, etc. like something you would get from Taco Bell. Mexican has just onions and lettuce. Food was hot, fresh, and delicious. I just wanted to clarify a few things from another review, especially considering that I wouldn't want ANYONE to miss a chance to dine at this little Gem of a Mercado/Restaurant ... They DO have menus, generally they will bring them when You seat yourself but if not, they keep them right up at the pass, also don't always be so fast to order directly off the menu. Depending on the day of the week (and especially on the weekends) their fare can be quite varied "off the menu" - Barbacoa, Achiote Pork, several excellent varieties of Tamales, etc - it's always a good idea to peek your head up at the pass and ask what the "especial" is (You won't be sorry!). Tostadas y Camarones on the weekends are to DIE for, BTW !!! As to what others have said RE pricing - it's true. As an example (I eat here as often as I can, even though it's in Lake Geneva I will always take the drive if the option is there) we stopped by for lunch on Monday, we each had 2 Tacos Mexicana (2 Asada, 2 Pollo) as well as a side plate of grillled Cebollitas and Serranos, a pair of Mexican Cokes, of course their amazing homemade chips and Salsa Verde, AND we ordered 2 burritos to go for dinner later in the day .. $16. To conclude, I also want to add that they have a relatively varied carneceria (meat counter) at the far end of the store, and the prices there are excellent as well. They generally have pre-marinated Pork Al Pastor, Fajitas, Carne para Tacos, etc as well as their excellent homemade Chorizo, etc, fresh chicharrones - the list is long and the quality here is also excellent. Wow! A hidden gem indeed!!! I haven't had Mexican food this good or authentic in a long time. My hubby and I started off with chips and salsa. Their guacamole is awesome, fresh with a nice kick! Ever since El Planque shut down in Lake Geneva, I have been searching for something decent to replace it!! Although, it is certainly not the same as El Planque, Tienda El Rancho is very good and very cheap. I need to start by saying that this is certainly a market first, restaurant second. I approached the counter in the front of the store where a women working the cashier was standing. I asked if we could place an order to go with her. Since we never saw a menu, we basically ordered based on former reviews. We ordered 2 carne asada tacos each. We were asked if we would like "American" or "Mexican" tacos. Mexican of course. The woman informed me that they have a $8 minimum in order to charge my credit card and then stated our current order was only about $5. My first thought was HOLY CRAP, THIS PLACE IS CHEAP!! I then asked what she recommended and she listed off some very american favorites, burritos, quesadilla, etc. We ordered two carne asada tacos each and a steak quesadilla and a bag of takis- total $10.32. On the way home, my sister almost dug into the food because it all smelt so good. When we got back we both devoured the tacos. They were delicious and very authentic! The quesadilla wasn't my favorite but it was still good. I think it would have been better without meat. I look forward to going back and trying something else. At first we weren't sure if there was a restaurant here. It looks like a grocery store from the outside and when you first step in. But in the back are a few tables. This appears to be a family run operation. You grab whatever drinks you want right out of the cooler. I ordered a beef burrito American style. It was possibly the best burrito I've had. Very good. First this is not a five star resturant, its a mexican food store that 2 aisle of the store were converted to a few tables to sit down and eat, not that i would want to! Tons of open containers of food laying around as you shrug your way to the back counter to place your order. After 4 min of trying to find a sever i finally found this nice looking mexican girl, with a soft voice, she gets 4 stars. The food i ordered was the typical cheap mexican crap that most mexican restaurants in walworth county serve. The taco, didnt have lettece, and no tomato, but they did give you a side cup of red sauce. The enchiladas i ordered were about the same quality although she did give me a side green sauce which was good. Other than that, the chicken was shredded so was somewhat authentic, but again no black beans, instead i got the cheap can brown beans that were pre made in a huge bowl that everyone else was getting, with no special cheese that most 5 star restaurants give you. The place was dusty and stunk, with a lot of open food items. If you like 3rd world country's you will feel right at home here, only thing is missing is dog shit on the ground. read more

I am from El Paso, TX so I know Mexican food. I was pleasantly surprised to find this authentic Mexican market place and restaurant in Lake Geneva. You have to know what you want because they are a bit shy when it comes to asking you air making suggestions. I recommend tacos al pastor Mexican style (onions with cilantro) or American style (cheese, cream, and tomatoes) with Horchata to drink. They have menudo on the weekends! I'd like to thank the previous reviewers for pointing us to this little gem in Lake Geneva. My wife, daughter and I went in at about 7pm, and immediately headed to the back where the restaurant area is. We grabbed menus and were immediately agog at some of the choices available - the standard Mexican restaurant fare, like carnitas and pollo, were joined by more delicacy-style options like cabesa and tripas. We had tacos, burritos, tortas, chicharrones, shrimp cocktail...basically gorged ourselves, for about $30. Everything was fantastic, including my adventuresome choice of a cabesa taco. The service was great as well; the lady who waited on us was very warm and inviting. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. read more
