My family and I got breakfast at Enswell during our stay in Philadelphia. This swanky, hip place…read moreoffers up elevated tasty food and superb service in an exquisitely decorated, albeit small, cafe. We braved negative degree weather for the roughly 10 minute walk from our hotel. We walked in at a good time. This is the type of place where a reservation for breakfast would be required. We were sat immediately. The dining area is tight. A green velvet bench, marble tables, metal chairs, all packed into a small area. You could very well have your butt brush over the table of the patrons next to you if you have to get up for any reason. It's tight. Our server was around quickly. He was super friendly and kept things conversational, light and sophisticated. My wife ordered an iced latte, I had their hot drip coffee. For a starter, we had to try the cinnamon knot bread. While it wasn't what we were expecting, it was good. Although, we wouldn't order again. The bread is presented as a small loaf, room temperature with a cold cream cheese icing drizzled over top. The bread had a mild cinnamon flavor and was dry. It lacked the sweet, moist dough you expect from a cinnamon bread. My wife ordered the French style omelet. This had gruyere cheese and chives. Beautifully plated, perfectly cooked and the taste was spot on. It was good enough to forget that she paid $21 for just an omelet, no meat, no sides. I ordered the Eggs Benedict. Pretty standard here. The eggs had bright orange yolks which is common for farm fresh eggs. The "coffee" hollandaise didn't come across with a coffee flavor but it was rich and went well with the ham and English muffins. One thing that stuck with me was their drip coffee. Not sure if it has been a while since I had a light roast but the Rival Bros. Revolver coffee was so good, I got a bag of whole beans to bring back home with me. I may even order it again online. Enswell succeeded on all fronts. The ambiance and service was great. The decor, impeccable. The food, thoughtful and tasty. The details from the silverware to the plates added to the experience. We would come back.

The crab fries and garlic bread are no skips. I hope to come back to try more food! We were lucky to get a table, the hostess was really nice and even found us outside to let us know we could make it! It does get really busy so I felt a bit rushed out but it was all good.

We started with the milpa salad and the chips and salsa. Both were absolutely amazing; the corn chips were as large as our head and the salsa flight is arranged in 9 sauces arranged from mildest to spiciest. We loved the milpa salad as well - the crickets were a fun crunch on top! The shrimp ceviche tostada featured some of the softest shrimp I've ever had. Squeeze the lime on top, it really elevates the plate! We ate up every bit of this dish. We then got the seasonal tlayuda, which included a variety of greens with corn, mushrooms, and truffle oil. Definitely one of our favorite dishes of the night! Next we had the carne asada - now THIS was a stand out! Perfectly soft, juicy meat with a crispy seasoned crust, on a bed of spicy salsa. Absolutely divine, I still think about this carne. Unfortunately the side that came with it was a bit flavorless and mushy for my taste - it was a corn based gnocchi-like dough. Finally for dessert, we ordered the mezcal tres leches. When I say this is the best tres leches I've ever had, I'm not kidding - although it looks a bit like a towel on top, the cream is insanely rich and creamy. The cake also had a layer in the middle, which I'm not sure what it was, that added even more interest to each bite. Additionally, because we were there for a graduation, we received a free ice cream on a bed of toasted chocolate crumbles which was also incredible. This is definitely one of the best meals I've had, and I can't wait until I'm back in Philly to come back!

Amá was a delicious, splurgy dinner outing. One of the first parties to the restaurant on a Friday…read moreevening, the greeting was warm and the space (which quickly filled) was low-lit modern. Our four-top shared: - Chips and Salsas (smashed avocado, six variations of salsas, heirloom corn tostadas)--we appreciated (1) that the waitstaff inquired about allergies as we had a diner allergic to avocado and she was able to enjoy the full meal and (2) that the salsas were organized from least to most spicy so diners could pick and choose easily. - Shrimp Ceviche Tostada (pico de gallo, burnt arbol, ancho chamoy)--one of my favorite ceviches to date! - Milpa Salad (huitlacoche, chapulines, cured nopal, heirloom beans, cumin dressing)--mix well and enjoy the wonderful dressing and varied textures of this grasshopper salad! - Lamb Neck Birria (consomme, black beans, salsa cascabel, salsa arbol)--incredibly tender and flavorful. - Wood Fire Pulpo (camote, salsa macha verde, meco sauce, black fried rice)--the octopus lovers in the group thought it was fantastic and appreciated the portion size for the price. I'll definitely return for that lamb and to try some more offerings!
