My husband and I are currently in the process of switching credit unions so we can get away from this one. There were a few things that motivated us to finally make the switch.
First, this credit union is actually part of a much larger collection of credit unions, with tentacles in several places. This means that they do not know us, even though we always stop in at the same location. Perhaps the most insulting result of this lack of personal touch was when we received an online message from an employee who decided to cut off half our last name when addressing us as Mr. and Mrs.
While the employees are friendly in person, the credit union as an organization is generally unhelpful and sometimes downright incompetent. About a year ago, someone stole my debit card number and used it in a different state, the same day I had used it in Columbia. The credit union was quick to disable our cards, which was good. However, we had to jump through some hoops and report this to a third party agency, and as of today we have still not been refunded the money that was stolen. One of the things that is delaying us closing our account is that we want them to do the ethical thing and take care of this before we leave, and we'll be visiting their branch again to try to get some answers.
We've had to jump through quite a few hoops with this credit union. Recently, we had to make changes to avoid getting charged a fee on our checking account, including switching to paperless statements, which means that if we want to file them we have to spend our own money on printing. Another policy that adversely affected us was the overdraft protection - we were charged the fee twice in one day for using it, and while I realize that being charged is part of the process of using it, charging us twice in a row without any sort of notification seems unreasonable.
If you're looking for a place to do business, skip this credit union and find a bank. They're not worth the trouble. read more
