If you've gotten tired of tourist traps especially the nearby "seaport village", or Old Town, but you still want to get your souvenir on, definitely stop in here before you spend money at the Midway museum or Kansas City BBQ (where the Great Balls of Fire scene with Anthony Edwards & Meg Ryan in the OG Top Gun movie was filmed) down the road. The selection of items is sparse but it is the least price-gougiest I've encountered in town, probably because they're subsidized by the tour companies. I got a hefty fridge magnet for $8 (same one cost $14 in seaport village) and some SD-themed sweatshirts for $26 that were selling for $30-$40+ in Old Town. Also, you can book various private San Diego Bay sailing tours at the same time. If you are a fan of the Navy, I highly recommend stepping right outside and booking the 2 hour Flagship tour.

We took the longer trail, the one that goes by the base and it was frankly not very interesting. Some parts smelled bad due to brackish water. It would be much better to run this trail if you're into fitness, or ride a bike. The trail ended at the slough with views of the river and Mexico. The trail was out and back and it would be nice if it could do a loop instead, hopefully plans to build a bridge are in the works. It would also be nice if the trail could connect to the beach. There's a small visitor center with exhibits and the rangers we talked to were very friendly and helpful. Parking is free and there are no fees to enjoy this park.

Despite being a California native, I've never been to a California Welcome Center, despite living…read moreto much closer ones. We wanted to stop by for a restroom break and to stretch our legs and eat some of our snacks before making our final voyage to San Diego and we saw the welcome center when we turned out of the freeway. Definitely stop here over a regular rest stop or fast food joint. We came in around 15-20 minutes before they had to close and all the ladies working there were super friendly, welcoming, answered all of our questions. Restrooms are super clean and smells nice too. They have a sign in sheet for visitors, lots of brochures for nearby attractions, an entire car inside for photos, lots of neat bits and pieces of history of the area and sights to see including info about pro-skater Tony Hawk, the surfboard museum or something nearby, and much more. Lots of neat gifts and trinkets for you to take back on your trip too. There's also books, and goods made by local artists. My friend from Texas got a cute kitchen towel with the art of all the animals and such from California. Cute! There's a discount corner and everything is reasonable and affordable. At the side there's also someone posted there to assist you with booking hotels and I'm sure other things like tickets to events or attractions, I'm sure. Going here has inspired me to eventually visit the other Welcome Centers too!

Yippee! The last one I went to was in Ventura and that was also fabulous! This Welcome Center is smaller than the one in Ventura but it was very solid! The two ladies that helped me today were sweet and knowledgeable. Since it's gonna hella rain the next couple of days, I asked for some indoor suggestions and they both were well prepared to answer my questions! One lady even pulled out a handout that had many rainy day activity sessions! I was pointed to go visit the Mission San Luis Rey, which I promptly did later and it did not disappoint but also got plenty of indoor suggestions like a vintage market to check out, go to the mall and go to the movies (I will probably do all of these things and more!). I also loved that they had very informative magazines, brochures for North Coast, and all of Cali and other states too! I was in heaven with all this information! Definitely give this place a visit if you like doing research on your travels! I loved it!

August Stop 15 Came…read morehere just to stop by after camping the night before. Their hours are very limited so be aware of that! Inside is a small museum and a little gift shop. The museum focuses a lot on the wildlife and provides a ton of historical information about the state park. The gift shop also had some cool trinkets and apparel available to purchase! Such a great stop for kids and it is sweet to know it is run by volunteers. The volunteer ranger at the shop was really nice and even gave us tips about our upcoming visit to Julian!

I stopped in for some last-minute gifts on the final day of my San Diego trip. The Visitor Center…read moreis small and no one greeted me or asked if I needed help, but there were plenty of different T-shirt options specifically. I was able to find those, plus some pens to purchase. Prices were probably slightly inflated but not terribly. Check out was easy. Bathrooms were right outside of the center in the courtyard, and those were clean and orderly.

We sometimes stop by the Balboa Park Visitors Center to grab brochures and explore the little gift…read moreshop. The staff is always nice, and there are some really cute things in the gift shop. Located near the Prado Restaurant, this Visitors Center is fairly easy to miss. Since there is so much to see in Balboa Park, I'm so glad that they have several knowledgeable employees working here. The gift shop contains a small selection of cute souvenirs. There are also drinks, snacks, and some great books on Balboa Park and the surrounding San Diego area. We are planning on getting the Passport to Balboa Park the next time we are here. If you like Balboa Park as much as we do, this Visitors Bureau Center is worth a stop when you are here!

Having access to hiking and mountain biking so close to the major urban center of San Diego is a…read morehuge benefit to everybody who lives here that enjoys the outdoors. Right now through March is the best time of year to visit in my opinion. Everything is beautiful and green and the flowers are starting to come out. I just hiked there this past weekend and it was spectacular. Over the course of the years when we have had super blooms, the mountainside on South Fortuna gets covered with poppies. We only saw a couple puppies here this past weekend but super exciting! With a little bit of rain in the near future forecast, the wildflowers are going to explode. So many different choices of trails to hike, but the south Fortuna Mountain is definitely my favorite. There's a kick ass section of over 200 stairs that goes straight up the hillside. That's the hillside where the poppies come out and it's one hell of a workout. It does get incredibly hot out here in the summer months. I would proceed with caution, if choosing outdoor activities here at those times. Tons of water, early morning or late evening start time for activities and adequate sun protection are a must. There is very little shade on these trails. I would also recommend always going with a buddy, just in case there's an emergency, and using the AllTrails app so you don't get lost.
