Add another star or two in your mind if you are a hotel-goer that wants to be safe and clean and happy with your room, because, as a Marriott in Mexico, this place could have been in Houston - - which is the ultimate purpose of a higher-end corporate hotel like Marriott: to get what you expect, even in the jungles of Bangladesh.
This place was very, very "Marriott-ish", if that is what you are looking for. The staff was professional and friendly. The parking was relatively easy to deal with. The room was clean. The soap was nice. We even arrived at two in the morning, and there was still a friendly person at the desk and a smiling valet to park the car, just waiting for us. And everyone spoke English. It made things really easy. Not the way I usually go.
So - yes - at least one more star should be added in your mind if these things make the difference when choosing a hotel in what might otherwise be a dicey city that you don't really want to deal directly with.
I did not book this particular hotel because it was my first choice. I booked it through Expedia because the hotel that I was actually trying to book (a well-reviewed local place with all of the fun high-end things like a pool and a balcony and a bar and a hot tub - very central - and costing only $67 per night for two people) was not being accepted by Expedia. So I called Expedia to fix it, and they instantly booked me here - for $168 per night. They told me that if I didn't book this room immediately, all of the rooms in Tijuana would be gone in minutes. The Expedia rep even gave me a running countdown of rooms as they disappeared... "there is one room left at... ooops... that is gone... let's look at another hotel... yes, three rooms left here, no, now only two... oh, it was just booked, only one left... you had better book it before it's gone." This made me desperate - so I would say "yes - book it", without caring about the price.
The reason I was so desperate is that I was taking my teenage daughter on an impromptu adventure into Mexico, so I didn't want us to stay in a place that might make her uncomfortable (like sleeping in the same bed, or a bathroom down the hall, or having a staff that didn't speak English), so I felt really stuck. If I was alone I would have gone there without a place to stay and just found a good one when I got there, But I could not do that with her. So, finally I just booked the overpriced room at the hotel that had nothing to do with being in Mexico - only with having a place to go to that she felt comfortable in so she wouldn't back out of the trip. But that said - it was a very nice hotel, with all of the expected amenities.
However - once we got past the bells and whistles, I found some things deeply lacking here, for all the money I was paying. Like the maid, who didn't replace the soap or the coffee or even remove the trash. Or the pool, which was almost in another building, given the walk through the many halls and the six flights of stairs and the courtyard that we had to go through to get to it. And the worst thing was the Champagne Brunch Buffet, where we asked for our Mimosas at least five times and still never got them, and we asked for juice, and coffee and never got it, and asked for utensils and didn't even get a spoon for my Menudo, even when the waiter saw me eating my soup with a mussel shell from my paella. Also, when a chaffing-dish of food on the buffet became empty, it was often not replaced: they just removed the item - so by the end of the meal, many things that were on the buffet when we checked it out and decided to stay were just gone, including the loin roast, AND the prime rib, which they replaced with chicken by the time we got to it (not equal meats). And then the Marriott cafe dared to charge us over 50 dollars US for the buffet for 2 - which was more than we paid for the biggest dinner that we had at Tijuana's premiere restaurant (Caesar's) the night before. I was pissed.
As far as location goes - if you have a car and a good map and some guts, you can drive quite a distance to get anywhere - but walking leads you to nothing but rows of burnt out buildings, small pharmacies, a few buildings, some taco stalls, and one mall (if you really foot-it). In other words, the location sucks - unless you hire a driver.
If you are a business person, in Tijuana for meetings, and you take taxis or limos everywhere, - and you don't really want an adventure in Mexico - I guess it is okay - because you can be in Tijuana, comfortable and insulated, without ever really being exposed. But if you want an adventure, and cool travel, and lots of things to walk to, this is no place to start such things from. read more
