My wife was craving Indian tonight and I thought to try somewhere new to order from (first and last time here). My wife is severely allergic to treenuts and about a year ago we had a scary visit to the ER because we encountered an Indian restaurant that used cashews in their butter chicken recipe (not always done but sometimes restaurants use it). SO, prior to ordering on DoorDash, I called the restaurant and asked if they use treenuts, specifically cashews in their recipe. The person over the phone said "No, we don't do that." We placed the order and after arriving my wife felt suspicious about it due to the creaminess/color. The restaurant, even though they were still open, did not answer the phone (3 calls from me and 2 from my wife). It was then we found out that this is a corporate chain so my wife called multiple locations even outside of the state. Guess what all of them said after we asked the same question? Yup, the butter chicken does contain cashews. If we didn't take these extra steps ourselves, instead of wasting my time here writing this review I'd be sitting next to my wife at the hospital risking terrible things happening to her. Poor training can be found anywhere, but for a corporate establishment to fail on this with such a simple task of knowing your own menu? And again, with a serious matter such as food allergies that are potentially lethal? I'm beyond furious. For the sake of a "review" that isn't personal, just about allergies and staff being negligent, I tried the butter chicken and original curry chicken. The butter chicken is made with breast instead of thighs (Americanized "Indian" cuisine I get it) so the sauce was merely a coating and didn't absorb much flavor into the meat. Some pieces were okay, others very dry. As for the original curry, somehow worse. Very dry throughout the meat and just tasted of a chili stew. Not very aromatic besides a slight touch of ginger. For Indian fast food I guess it's decent but the price does not match; if you're looking for something authentic or close and not worried about your wife going to the hospital and being severely hurt or dying, 3.5/10. read more

Yeah, I had high hopes. I had to come back. I ordered the Tikka Chicken and a side of Samosas. While I drove home, I devoured the Samosas. They were delicious. They were huge, flaky, dense, moist, and packed full of flavor. Honestly, I had never had a better Samosa. The potatoes were mashed with seasoning instead of being cubed or chopped. I had never had it like that. I was excited as I drove, as I reside 25 minutes away. I got home, and they had given me someone else's food. It was Butter Chicken. OK, NO problem. I'll try it. However, it was flat. I mean no flavor or spice. In all fairness, it wasn't what I ordered, and it was intended for someone else. Maybe it was how they ordered it. The next day, I took my order back. I got home, and it was the same thing. It had a tomato base, but no spice or flavor. It was very soupy. I was shocked. I am only surprised because I work in banking and all my coworkers are Indian. A nice fast casual Indian restaurant in Uptown Charlotte so parking here is tough. This is a more of a grab and go spot but there is plenty of seating inside. The food is more modern Indian cuisine so not your traditional Indian food. They do have the classics like butter chicken, tikka masala, and samosas on their menu that you can order but they also have wings, fries, and other American favorites with an Indian twist. Had a craving for something Indian and came across Tikka Shack while walking around. Across the street from a park area, doesn't appear to have street parking around but there are lots to park in nearby. Set up inside similar to typical quick order businesses. They have tables/chairs to eat in as well. One cashier to order from, they have the menu on 3 large TVs above the cash register and have some physical menus to look at and order from too. They have biryani, curries, naans, even a Tikka pizza for food options. Some dessert options and drinks too. Prices appeared decent, can build your own curry order and ranged from $10 and up. Went with the samosa appetizer, 2 samosas for $5 and comes with a small sauce for dipping. You can pay cash or card. While the cashier was friendly, it took almost 15 minutes for the samosas to be made. At one point I saw an employee call out asking why the samosas were taking so long. People that came after me were going in and out with food, and larger orders of food than what I made. The samosa had a nice crunch to them, but they were sweeter in flavor than I would have preferred. Not sure if I would return to try other options. read more

I'm sorry, but no. I saw a lot of professionals with to-go boxes of Indian food that all looked similar so I had to know where it was from because I love Indian food. I loved the concept of the menu- fast Indian food with cool variations like naan quesadilla, naan pizza, etc. I was super excited to try it too and the restaurant was a clean, cute, fast food looking Indian spot. The person at the front who took my order was nice and quick, and there was a huge line to the back wall when I got in. Sadly, I would never eat here again and I didn't finish even a third of my food. I can see why some people who don't like spicy or super seasoned food would like this... but it is extremely Americanized and watered down. If you're actually a fan of indian food I wouldn't go here. I got the tikka pizza and butter masala. It tasted like rice with flavorless sauce and meat. The pizza tasted the same. I felt like not even a tablespoon of salt was used. I'm highly disappointed and giving it 2 stars for the clean restaurant, fast and efficient service, simple and unique menu, affordable prices, and for the fact that it is a hot spot for people on their work break. Uptown has seen a large influx of Indian restaurants over the years especially since the end of Covid and the return of the office workers. While some of them operate as smaller cafeteria style options where you move down the line and tell them what you want, Tikka Shack is more of a fast casual type restaurant with a set menu. Some of the criticisms I've seen are that it is less authentic and I can certainly understand that point of view, but I still have to give them credit as they are efficient, consistent, and their food is quite tasty especially their garlic naan. I also enjoy their selections of fresh juices and soft drinks. The restaurant is clean and modern and upon ordering from the counter they will give you a number and bring your food out to the table. They offer some fusion type dishes including chicken wings and naan pizza, but I like to stick to the basics and order from their build your own curry menu. You choose the style of curry you want from a wide range of spice levels (you can request that they make it hotter if you are a fan of spice), then you choose the protein you'd like. It all comes served on a bed of basmati rice and you can finalize your meal with some delicious naan bread. Overall I really enjoy their menu concept, the taste of the food, and the portions provided. I think this makes a great lunch spot. read more

Ive officially joined Naan Nation! I've passed this establishment for the past 3 years and finally decided to give it a whirl. There were a slew of optionS from Kabob Bowls, Wraps and Salads. I had the Southern Curry w/ Chicken alongside a garlic naan. The Southern Curry contains coconutty curry with an India kick. The dish is curry infused with coconut milk, curry leaves, red chilis, cilantro and mustard seeds. It was the perfect evening treat before my workout. My friend and I looked up places to eat in Charlotte after leaving the airport on a brisk October 2022 trip. We found the Tikka Shack. We didn't know Charlotte very well, so we ended up using Yelp to find the Best Indian that was open on a Thursday afternoon after 2pm. Obviously, we beat the lunch rush when we got here around 3pm. The restaurant seemed empty, but there was a lot of tables that were empty but there was some that was occupied that day we were there. Felt like a large restaurant or One that felt like a small sized fast food cafeteria, but that's just me. And so, we entered and ended up ordering like a McDonald's with their large visually stunning menus. We were asked if we were dining in or take out and got a table number, much like a fast food number. After payment, we got a water cup and proceeded to fill it up before sitting down and waiting for our order. The ambiance was quiet and casual, especially due to it being a work day and in the afternoon before the evening rush hour in downtown Charlotte. For the most part though, the experience here at the Tikka Shack - Charlotte was about 1 hour or so and it was a good hour. Felt fast food ish based on the layout of the restaurant, but it was good enough. I ended up getting the spinach masala, a side of garlic naan, and an order of veggie samosas. The overall experience here at this Tikka Shack in downtown Charlotte, NC was good, casual, and felt more fast food ish approach to the cuisine, much like how Panda Express is to authentic Chinese cuisine, but that's just me, but without the pre made entrees displayed in a display case. The service here was good, friendly, and fast. After ordering, I would say the food came to our table about 15 minutes afterwards which is a far cry from the usual 20-25 minutes in a typical Indian restaurant. I suppose it's fast food Indian cuisine here, without sacrificing too much quality. The prices here are fairly cheap, comparative to where I lived. For the price I paid for a 3 item meal, it would have been close to $30 in Honolulu, HI, but here in Charlotte, NC, it was about $21. I was seriously shocked at how much less it was here, especially in North Carolina of all Places. The food was delicious of course. Everything was really good and my friend and I were happy that we stopped here before making our way south towards Greenville, SC that day. If you are looking for a hidden gem in downtown Charlotte, NC, consider coming to the Tikka Shack for your daily fix of Indian cuisine, if you are in the area. Definitely recommended to check out for sure. This Tikka Shack location is located at 400 Tryon Street in downtown Charlotte NC. They accept major credit cards, as well as cash. While it may not be a typical restaurant with its kitchen set up and exposed like a fast food restaurant, it's okay for what it's doing. As far as parking goes, there is a paid parking garage that my friend used to park in. Best bet would be that one, which was basically across the street from the restaurant. Of course there are other nearby street parking that maybe the solution for you. I don't know charlotte's public transportation system, But if you flew into CLT airport, take the routes that will guarantee your passage here. Or if Amtrak is your game, take the Amtrak into Charlotte and then take the Local bus routes to here. Or even better: Uber / Lyft here after your arrival into Charlotte. However you get here, the Indian cuisine is strong and your guilty pleasures await here to get your daily fix. 4.5 stars for the overall experience. 5.0 stars for the prices for sure. 4.5 stars for the food and service. 4.0 stars for the Ambiance. Tikka Shack is sort of like a Panda Express of Indian food right in uptown Charlotte. The menu is smallish (only four or five options, but they do offer a tasty masala and vindaloo. The Chicken 65 is good, and the somosas are solid options for an appetizer. Prices are a little on the high side (especially $3.50 for a can of Coke). Overall, this is a good quick order, Indian fast foodish offering, and I'm glad they open at 11 for when I'm in town in game days. read more

I'd like to try a garlic one next time. It's clear that they are new. There was a massive line at rush lunch hour. I actually beat the rush and was still told it would take 15 minutes. I waited and waited and finally had to ask about my food. The ticket didn't transfer from order to kitchen. The man manning the front was very kind and worked to get my meal out.
