I should have read the reviews on this campground, but I didn't. So during our 3rd day, I'm enjoying my coffee when I heard a gunshot. Then more gunshots.... scared me to death. I didn't know if there was a crazy person running around shooting a gun. I called a # on their pamphlet which turned out to be the Dallas County Sheriff department. They told me they do get a lot of calls about this, but that there is a gun range north of here. I was shocked that no one mentioned this to me when I booked. I have 2 pups and one of them just freaked out, shaking, and panting, (the other one is older and can't hear well). The gunshots were continuous... How is anyone supposed to enjoy quite relaxing time when from inside their RV and watching TV, you can very well hear gun shots? I called the office to let them know I was upset about this & I should have been made aware of this. The lady told me the range has been here just as long... and they are not going to disclose the shooting range on their website and that she was sorry. Wow! If you have animals that scare from any loud bangs or noises, please be aware and go somewhere else. I WILL be asking campgrounds in the future about any shooting ranges nearby. Who wants to listen to any gun shots while trying to enjoy time in a RV?! We won't be back here ever. Lesson learned. read more

We stayed at Timberline for about 4 months because of where my husbands job was. We even had to extend our stay a couple times and the times we weren't even sure when we would be leaving they were patient and worked with us well. We absolutely loved it! Marta and the rest of the staff were so nice and helped you with anything you needed. The campground is definitely growing with new things and we will 100% be back the next time we are in Iowa. read more

Just off the beaten path we reserved this RV spot. When we reserved it the guy was rude, so we were skeptical about the site. To our surprise it was very clean, friendly neighbors, pool, volleyball, just an overall great place to hang out with the family. read more

We stayed in the new, open area where there's lot of room between the sites. We liked this better than the tree area. Great check-in, friendly, helpful. Escort to site. Water pressure was good, WiFi was okay. Pool was too crowded with kids to go in. Site was long enough to park our pickup as well. Easy to find off the highway but a long drive to get to the office...paved though. Bathrooms were clean and neat. If you come from the east, you'll need to make a wide right turn to get into the park by getting into the opposing lane. Good park, we'd come back. Grocery store about a mile away. Good dog day care is 4 Paws Unleashed nearby. The state capitol building is gorgeous! Brass Armadillo Antique Mall is one of the best ever! read more

Timberline was the perfect place for us to settle in a couple of days along our travels. Not to mention an ideal home base for visiting Des Moines. The camp is beautiful, and we really enjoyed our spot, tucked among trees and rental cabins. It's a large property but wasn't too full during our stay in April (perks of traveling during the off-season!). What we really loved is that they're updating so much of the camp, so the facilities are new, clean, and plentiful. They've just added a new play area for families with kids, there's a common room with arcade-style games, and the general store has so many great items - they had our s'mores needs covered, including skewers and the cutest wine: Campfire Hootch! They had a selection for those who have more "refined" tastes than we do, too. We took advantage of the very new and pristine laundry facilities - bonus! And the highlight of our stay was the awesome staff. They were so friendly and helpful, and it was obvious that they care about their guests and want to make sure they have a fantastic stay. Hi Marta and Elizabeth! We definitely hope to find ourselves in Iowa again, if for no other reason than to enjoy another stay at Timberline. read more

Timberline Campground and RV Park is easy to get to, has better than usual campsites (for RVs lots of pull-throughs), and friendly management/owners. The campground I'm told has been in service for around 44 years and the current owners (since 2017) have put in lots more spaces, an air-conditioned shower/bath house with laundry room, and a shaded fenced dog area. Had a great visit with one of the owners and enjoyed our stay there for 3 nights. The park is located very close to a major highway, but no traffic noise. Please give this location a try if you travel close to Des Moines. read more

I am going to be honest. Price gouging!! I paid 800 dollars for a month and they charge for everything on top of it. They just charged me for electricity and I thought that was covered in the monthly fee. Campers that travel know that an average monthly rate is 400 dollars and that includes all the utilities. Wi-Fi has been free at every campground I been to. I would take a hard pass on this place unless you like paying a mortgage payment to park your camper on someone land. For that price they should have state of the art campers already on the property to rent. Never again read more

Reserved a spot here as a place to take a break while traveling to Colorado from Chicago area. The area is very nice, bougie/high end. The campground has two sections: An older, more wooded section with campsites that were very close together and a newer, nicer section without trees or shade but with more space between spots. They also have cute little cabins sitting on the edge of their pond. The owners/workers were super nice! They had a good selection of items in their little store/office. They escorted each guest to their spot upon arrival. A kid brought firewood right to our campsite the first night. The bathrooms in the new section are super clean and nice. They have a dog park, swimming pool, playground, bounce pad, and rec hall with video games. It was a pleasant place to stay for two nights. Very quiet during the week with full-timers mostly working or staying in their rvs. Take a drive to see the bridges of Madison County if you have time. Or, check out the shopping that's only 15 minutes away. read more

Was a good campgrounds if you are camping in the back where there is shade. While we were camping the pool was under renovations, so that was particularly crappy. Another huge thing that is not disclosed to campers is that there is a gun range behind the campgrounds, so you hear gunshots all day long. Something that should be disclosed to incoming campers. But other than that, very nice people, and a good place to camp. read more

We stayed over a weekend while en route across the Midwest. We had only checked out Good Sam app, but none of the review sites before booking, and it was a great reminder why Good Sam reviews are to be taken with a grain of salt. The area itself is pretty enough- rural and wooded. And they do have the requisite checklist of summer camp things to do- a pool (no deck chairs we saw though), badminton net, space to throw a football with dad. But the spaces were rutted unlevel gravel with just barely enough space to get your slide out without bumping the utility pole or your neighbor's picnic table. There may have been longer spaces that were simply not available, but our 40' coach filled the pull-through space from end to end. There was a steel fire pit with the space, but I would never trust a fire burning in this close of quarters. However, after seeing the back-in space we were originally going to get, I'll take the pull-through. Looks like we would've been even tighter there with the neighbors all shoulder-to-shoulder. We'll look around next time we're in the area. read more

Lots of fun! The last few times we've camped here we were in the very back. Lots of shade and pull through sites. I've noticed quite a bit of wildlife. One night an owl was hooting and another camper was hooting back! A family of racoons came down a huge tree, looked around, and ran into the woods. The chipmunks are running from the woods to the cabins. Squirrels are very active. Lots of birds including a few woodpeckers. They keep the gravel from getting potholes so the water doesn't collect so their usually isn't any mosquitos. The workers sometimes drive by selling firewood. If your spot doesn't have a fire ring, just ask, they have the neat steel fire rings. If you have a problem with your camper just ask the front desk, they have a list of businesses that will come on site and fix whatever is wrong. read more

We've traveled all over the US and Canada and this is the worst RV Park we've ever stayed at. Perhaps if you stayed in the newer section it might be a bit better although you're still in a "parking lot" with no trees. We were in the older section and we could barely get our slides out. The family next to us had to eat right next to our sewer and their picnic table was actually under our bed slide - that's how close the sites were. And to make matters worse we woke up to extremely loud gunfire as there was a shooting range right next to us. Also if you're interested in a pool the pool was closed and there are no bathrooms. You had to use a porta potty if you needed a bathroom outside of your RV. $65 a night was a ridiculous price for what you get here. We will not be back. read more

Let's start off with the reviews that are posted here on yelp. They are out dated. Any review before July 2017 is about the previous owners. There are New Owners and New updates to this campground. The bathrooms have been updated as well as the Rec Hall. they are adding New sites and New cabins as well as a New Pond. This Park will be more able to handle the larger Motorhomes and Fifth Wheels. Had a site reserved for this weekend but I had emergency surgery on my knee a few days ago. The owners have no compassion for medical issues as we were unable to travel to Des Moines with my knee in a cast hobbling around on crutches. They charged us for 4 nights, over $200 for being unable to travel. We will never return to this CG again, way overpriced, too rigid on reservations, poorly run and maintained. Go down the interstate a couple of exits to the KOA!! read more

Stayed here for 2 weeks in the new section and had a good experience! Staff is friendly and helpful, laundry facilities are air conditioned and clean, and the campground is well-maintained. Our site in the new section was a good size; I wish all campgrounds gave us this amount of room to breathe. People respect quiet hours-bonus! What would make it 5 stars is some shade in the new section, and a solution to the powdery gravel-impossible not to track it in, but those are not huge issues. I went camping with weekend here and it was a nice place. The staff was very nice and helpful when needed. The only problem is that over the phone they didn't mention that their pool was under maintenance or that the campgrounds is right by a shooting range. It is important to mention that stuff over the phone or somewhere before people reserve spots. read more

Stopped in Tuesday night on a road trip from a Chicago to Denver to tent camp. I called the morning of to reserve a spot and Marta couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. She was still up when i got in at 11 pm and helped me check in and showed me my spot. I can't comment on much about the campsite itself, I was only there for a few hours, but it seemed quiet and the area I was in didn't have any other tents. This campground is way too expensive for what they offer, and a gun range is near by so their is always shooting going off, no organized. activities for the kids beside very old swings, the only good thing is the pool when it is cleaned. Says it has a dog park it is a fenced in area on rocks with no shade. The pool might be worth it at half the price. read more

We love it here! It's clean, beautifully landscaped and well-maintained and they're constantly trying to improve it. They've opened an entire new section, including wide spaces and new laundry/shower building. They've also added several tiny house/cabins that sit on the fishing pond. We've been here since January (our son lives about a mile away) and with my husband being away on business a lot, they have helped me so much!! read more

When we drove into this place, we said WOW, how beautiful. The entrance and drive in is amazing. We were cheerfully greeted by the new owner who was eager to make us feel welcome. The check in process was a bit stressful for the two people behind the counter. When we went to our site, it first had to be vacated by all he neighbors cars. Once in it, it was uneven. Small and yes, close to the crowd of neighbors. We leveled up our small rig. The neighbors were up late around their fire outside our window. Not the best place unless there is no other option or give it some me time with the new owner and maybe he will improve this place which has great potential. read more

My buddy and I reserved two pull thru full hookup sites in January, 2014 6 months before our summer trip. Two weeks before we left on our trip, we confirmed the reservation and the owner confirmed that we have 2 pull thru sites. When we arrived on July 14, we were told that they only had 1 pull thru available and another site on the other side of the campground with water and power. We asked why our reservation was not honored and was told that someone pulled into the other assigned site. The clerk was not able to find a solution to the problem and I asked her to call the owner and she refused to do so. Another clerk was present and told us that they never guarantee a site for a one night stay. I reminded her that was not what the owner promised us. I said that we would rather go to the KOA (Des Moines West) and she said that would be fine. I told her I would write a review on Yelp and she said "go ahead". I would not recommend this campground due to the rude staff. They need to be trained in customer service and hospitality. The customer should not be blamed for their mistake. read more

Saw this campsite on goggle and thought it looked good and didn't check reviews!! We were told no sewer hookups, and the staff was like, they were doing US a favor, by letting us stay here!! We were put in back area, with uneven sites and no room for us or our friends, traveling with us to put our awnings out! BEWARE, there is a gun range in close range, so naps, dogs who are nervous, or people with babies and small children, who do take naps, or if you just want quite, this isn't the place! read more

I needed to stay at a campground in the Des Moines area for the 4th of July weekend to meet with my Son and his family to go to Adventureland, we were going to stay at Adventureland Campground, but they only had 1 site left and they did not take tents. So I found Timberline Campground through Good Sam Club, I was reluctant because of the reviews I read. But figured it couldn't be to bad if Good Sam endorsed it, so we gave it a try. I called a month ahead to reserve a spot for our 27' travel trailer, with room for our Son's tent. I called 2 days before we left (Lawrence, KS) to confirm our reservation. When we arrived we checked in, we did get a Good Sam discount, which was good, since I thought the price was a little high, especially since rates were only for 2 people and they charged you extra for additional people. They did charge $3 extra if you used a credit or debit card, so I wrote a check. The staff was friendly enough. The spots were a little tight, but I had been in worse. There was enough gravel at the sites that I saw. They were pretty level, we did have to put a board under the wheels on one side of the trailer to level it, but we had to at other sites as well. The bathrooms could use some updating, the stalls near the pool were a little tight, I am not a very big person and my knees almost touched the door when I sat down, I could see where someone larger would have a tough time. I prefered to use the showers at the end of the office building. The shower stalls in there were a little tight for my husband though so the showers by the pool worked best for him. I honestly do not see why this campground got so many bad reviews, I was happy with this campground and would stay there again if we are needing one in the Des Moines area. Pam D read more

We were able to get a spot for Memorial Day weekend, now I know why they had openings. This is the most expensive campground we have ever stayed at $39.50 a night for water and electric no sewer, and then they charged an extra $2 per night for our adult son to stay with us. The did have a waste dump station but did not even provide a hose for rinsing.They wanted to charge an EXTRA $30 if I paid by credit card! Good thing I had cash. If they had been nice lots the price would not have bothered me, but they were gravel sites with a crappy wooden picnic table and not in the least bit level, and in full sun. Good thing our neighbor had kayaks on top of his vehicle because there was a total swamp around their camper. They were packing up and walking in ankle deep water. They complained to the owner and he just said it was an " act of God" and walked away. The sites were on a hill so with a little effort they could be graded so the water would drain away. The bathrooms were clean but the stalls were built for a toddler. I'm 5'9" and my knees hit the door when I sat down. For us this place just served as a place to rest our heads at night and didn't ruin or weekend because or whole purpose in visiting DesMoines was to see our son graduate from Medical school. If you are looking for a nice camping experience keep looking as the sites are packed one on top of each other and the staff is lacking in hospitality. read more
