They specialize in health everything - healing, consultation (I've not done that), various pills - over the counter, imports - vitamins, great tea selection, food - I like the green tea Kit Kat, sauces, desserts, noodles, it's cool to browse. You can also find Chinese vases in here, cosmetics, lotions, facial masks, some funny, funky items, too. Tin Bo is in on Broadway, in the middle of Chinatown. Prices aren't bad, it depends on the item you're looking for. The selection is interesting if you're not afraid to venture out. Came here years ago for the first time, for herbs to treat "an issue" ;) haha. It worked. Real? Psychological? I'd say real, as homeopathy works for me too. And so has TCM over the years. It's like car maintenance, only your vehicle is your body and you need a tune up every 6 months or so. At that time I consulted a TCM herbalist working there. But when I came here a few weeks ago to get some preventative lung meds to help maintain against The Covid I did not ask if anyone was there. I came with a formula I had purchased in Shanghai back in November to treat a cold I got but it was not available here (or the other store I checked). However the woman working here recommended several other formulas and I ended getting 2. Been using them since. Does it work? No idea as I am not sick but again, I figure giving the lungs a boost in these times is at the very least, good for the mind as well. I came here for the Chinese medicine doctor and for an herbal prescription. I wasn't disappointed. I don't speak Chinese, but the doctor on site spoke English well enough for us to communicate my needs and her recommendation. She has a great personality as well and nice to deal with. After the consultation, she prescribed the herbal remedy to cure my Heat (if you know Chinese medicine you'll understand). They put together the remedy in huge sized tea bags for me to boil and drink for 5 days. I've been to other Chinese herbal places in the area and they don't give you these convenient tea bags. It's a huge plus. In the end, I paid $12 for the consultation and $66 for the remedy. The consultation is less than other places, but the remedy was higher than others. It all balances out. The store itself has a lot of imported Chinese items, from alcohol, candy, remedies and basic supplies. What I like most is their tea selection. For years I've been going to either a Ranch 99 or the Hawaii Supermarket (San Gabriel Valley) when I want to buy Chinese herbs. It's WAY cheaper than the same packages that are sold out here at places like The Golden Cabinet or similar. Well, today I got schooled in the prices of Chinese herbs! Bf and I wandered around Chinatown today, trying to catch the end of the Chinese New Year celebration, and we came across a TON of Chinese herb places. These herb places had the medicines that we'd been buying from Ranch 99 or the Hawaii Supermarket for like HALF the price. Now, when I detail the difference in prices, this is a typical comparison of what I'm talking about: Golden Cabinet price: $11 Ranch 99/Hawaii Supermarket Price: $5 Tin Bo Inc. price: $3 They have packaged Chinese formula tea pills, supplements (shark cartilage, fish oils, etc), and raw herbs that you can buy by the ounce or pound, in bulk. One day fifteen years ago I wondered if I could find an authentic Chinese acupuncture doctor to help me recover from a car accident. I took some time to wander for the best part of a day through LA's Chinatown. One place impressed me, both for their treatment with fine needles but also with dried plant parts called Chinese Medicine. They were experts. Five months later I had visited regularly and was restored to better health than before the accident. I continued to come, learning about healthy Asian foods and delicious hand processed tea. In time I learned the names of nearly all who worked there and came to trust them fully and recommend them to friends and family. I learned that natural products help us balance our internal organ system. Tin Bo sells high quality products that are carefully sourced to make sure that they do their job. They have customers that come from thousands of mile away because of the trust built up. They have some famous customers who could go anywhere in the world for treatment and herbs but have chosen Tin Bo and the Sun family as their trusted source. I would venture to say that their experiences were genuine but some explanations may help others. So, here goes. The word "tea" means a refreshing drink to most people in the US. In a Chinese herb store it can have a much broader meaning. While it can have a normal meaning, e.g. "I love to brew my oolong tea at 190 degrees for three minutes" it could also refer to the result of boiling various roots, seeds, and dried leaves from a variety of plants when drained off results in a dark liquid that my wife and I nicknamed "yak urine." Of course it is not from yaks nor is it urine. It just has a really odd taste. Sometimes they used to include a piece of sugar candy with each day's herbal prescription because their customers would suck on the candy after drinking the "tea" to cover the taste. So herbal prescription teas are not consumed for the taste. Some herbal teas are pleasant enough. We sometimes make chrysanthemum tea. We like the double deer brand, throwing in goji berries. Very mild and a lovely antioxidant drink. The basics of Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments at Tin Bo are three parts, each one priced separately. You pay for a doctor's diagnosis, based on an interview, feeling three pulses on each wrist, tongue evaluation, and general overall presentation, like the way you walk and speak. You pay separately for herbal prescriptions prepared based on the doctor's exam. These vary somewhat on the ingredients used and the number of days in the course of treatment. Thirdly you pay for acupuncture. There will be some pricing information in the doctor's office on the wall. You will have to ask about the prescription price. In China acupuncture is usually given every day. In the US we do not expect to do that, so weekly treatments are the norm. But you may decide to ask for more treatments if you wish. They are priced per treatment. In the US, we expect a high degree of physical isolation with medical treatment. Chinese Medicine is much more intimate in a typical traditional setting like at Tin Bo. This is not West LA. As others have mentioned, loose herbs are for sale. Beginners may wish to try some regular tea or goji berries. Brewing time and temperature of teas affect taste. Green teas often are best brewed at 175 degrees for a minute or two. Oolong at 190. Black tea at near boil. Ask about Pu ehr. It is an oxidized and fermented tea dried in bricks. You may wish to try some American or Korean ginseng, typical tonic herbs. I go with the American. Tea flavor is also dependent on quality. Just as Trader Joes sells two buck chuck (okay, more than 2 dollars now) but also wine for ten or twenty times more, tea can vary widely in price. Expect better experiences with better tea. I see that some people have been negative in their reporting. I don't expect to see everybody respond to treatments perfectly. We are talking about health and disease, after all. Prescriptions filled at Walgreens can't be returned if you don't like them. Even if you have an allergy. Writing about herbs by saying they are old or contaminated is libel if not true. So....we decided to spend a leisurely Sunday afternoon wandering around Chinatown...and just for the heck of it - go get a wellness check up at one of the Chinese Apothecaries in the neighborhood. And this one seemed reputable...it had to be, cos Sly Stallone got treated here and Melanie Griffith too...(hmmm, oh maybe they'd just walked into the store and got bamboozled into getting their pictures taken, kinda like we got roped into getting little springy needles poked into us.... eh, what could be more fun than randomly having your tongue examined, and pulse taken and given a quick overall diagnosis of the size of your yin, the temperament of your liver and the vigor of your heart -- all in 5 minutes, for a modest sum of $10. That is......if you don't get suckered into a treatment of acupuncture for the persistent crick in ur back and the long time ache in the knees and that slightly prematurely arthritic feeling in your digital joints ( or is it from spending too many hours typing away on yelp and facebook!:) or the slight headache from being a little dehydrated from the blazing sun beating down on us all afternoon. well...suckered in we did get. One for stiff finger joints and a crick in the back and the other for old knee injury and an "angry" liver. So plop we went on a little massage table - while the good doctor gently knocked little acupuncture needles into our backs, calves and forearms. And then deftly proceeded to Cup us in several areas on our backs -- with these little round glass jars -- and sends us along our way to the herbalist to pick up our prescription of herbs for the next six days. and a whopping bill, which was certainly much more than we had expected from our initially thought $10 adventure. We decided to go for it tho. I had some years back had a positive experience with an herbalist back in Boston who prescribed me 10 days of this litle round black pellets of herbs that I had to take three times a day (all 15 of those little round balls) -- and it did miraculously get rid of the night sweats I had been having for the past over ten years. The Doctor then told me my yang was overshadowing my yin, and therefore out of balance. Well that was cured and now my stiff muscles are over shadowing the flexibility I once used to have.... The experience at the place was pleasant --however, like with most Chinese herbalists -- if you don't speak the doctor's language -- you do come out with less detailed information, than I imagine a native Mandarin or Cantonese speaker would be able to elicit. Our doctor, was pleasant enough and seemed to be experienced. We weren't able to communicate well though, since my partner and i didn't speak any Mandarin or Cantonese and she didn't sepak a whole lot of English or Taiwanese (that my partner speaks) -- She did have the young boy before us wait and help communicate with her. My experience at the last place I went to in Boston was much more difficult as the herbalist/doctor there spoke absolutely no English, so we often did this very uncomfortable, awkward interactions with blunt questions in English being posed. We were sent home with a large packet of herbal teas -- which we are to boil down and drink a cup of for six days consecutively. And this stuff is NO regular tea -- but looks and tastes like, twigs, sticks and roots from the Home Depot gardening center. We had NO idea what was in the back, but did open and examine the sachets once cooked -- to discover combinations of those mysterious herbs you see in sacks in every Chinese apothecary. Well we are on day 4 now -- drinking the vile, bitter boiled stuff-- can't wait for day six to come and go -- when it will be the last of this stinky, bitter stuff we have to down in one go, while holding our noses! I tried this place today because I normally frequent Eagle Rock Community Acupuncture, and they are closed Sundays and Mondays. Turns out they are two doors down from 3000 Years Chinese Medicine Clinic, which provides similar services, though this is also primarily a store that sells herbs and other goods for Chinese Medicine. I had Acupuncture + Consultation done, which was $32 + $12 respectively. I ended up getting 3 days worth of herbs based on my current issues, which was $12/day. Totaling me out at $80. The doctors at both places seemed informed, and I haven't taken my herbs yet, but I feel better from the acupuncture thus far. Compared to two doors down, the herbs cost more ($12/day vs. $7/day, I believe), but the Consultation costs less ($12 vs. $25/$15) and the Acupuncture costs less ($32 vs. $75/65, or $40 for cupping). So if you only need Acupuncture, I would go here. If you Acupuncture + Herbs, it is sort of a toss up between the two because 7 days of herbs here adds up. I did read that all the Herbs here are very cheap, so if you are savvy and know what herbs you actually need, this seems like a great place to go. The markup is clearly for their healthcare advice (which is a valuable service), but if you are already in the know about what you need- then this seems like a great place to go. It has inspired me to buy some books on Chinese Herbs/TCM online, and to come here to buy the materials to see how these natural remedies can help my health! I would definitely come back if I am feeling ill on a Sunday (when other places are closed), as I was able to be seen on a walk-in basis, and they were still seeing patients up until 6PM. I went in the 2nd time to see the doctor for the same issues I had just 3 days later, and the exp was not as pleasant as the 1st. I had a cold at that time when I returned for my 2nd visit. And the doctor gave me 2 prescriptions stating that she needs to treat the cold as well intending to charge $12 per prescription for this one visit, which seemed questionable to me. Then they immediately say that they will only charge for one visit. Then they charge $12 per bag x 3 for the cold and $13 per bag x 4 for my other illness. It ended up being $100 altogether!!! The doctor insisted on giving 2 seperate prescriptions instead of just combining it, ok fine. But then the cold med is only 30% size than the other med. How is that tiny lil pouch $12?!? The ingredients look nothing foreign from the herb isle in 99 ranch market! There's no way for me to know if they are lying here or there and what's the proper procedure or not. It's just bogus what happened, the trust is gone, I'll try another shop most likely since I feel cheated and fooled. Lesson learned here.... Go in for quick fix but make your own decisions and don't trust the staff or the doc completely. They are money hungry it seems and not completely ethical in their conduct. If that's ok and normal for you, then go ahead and give it a try, I'm sure the doctor can help you. Her expertise seems legit. read more

This place is AMAZING!! I had gone to this place when I was 17, I woke up with a weird rash on my body. It started to spread to my back & chest & I decided to go to a dermatologist at Kaiser. WORST experience of my life. I had two cultures done (results kept saying I had some type of hot tub infection, really?) I saw about 7/8 different doctors, they just kept prescribing me a bunch of different medicines until I finally had an allergic reaction to that. Fed up, I came here, to Tin Bo. The lady doctor took a look at my arms, asked me a few questions, wrote some things down on a paper; she had me take my "prescription" to the person at the counter, where they grabbed a bunch of different herbs & roots & leaves from jars & placed it all into a bag. I took it home, made a tea with the herbs & roots, etc. I had to drink it for 7 days (it was disgusting, not going to lie. It looked like muddy water) let me tell you tho. By the end of the week, EVERYTHING had disappeared. The weird rash AND the allergic reaction to the tetracycline medicine that Kaiser had prescribed me. Ugh, never will I go any where else but HERE.
