I've only been to the Palace Pool Club twice, both during special events with international DJs. The first was their two year anniversary with Yellow Claw in April 2017 and the second was Flume's first show in Manila just recently in December 2017. The two year anniversary show with Yellow Claw seemed to have went on without a hitch. I arrived past midnight with my friend and getting in was a breeze. There was no crowd outside; everyone was inside and the dance floor was easy to navigate. HOWEVER, just recently with this Flume event, it was an absolute disorganized MESS. Apparently, the Palace Pool Club was hosting a private company event earlier that evening prior to Flume. Mind you, doors usually open at 9 p.m. but due to the private event, we were informed doors wouldn't be opened until 11:30 p.m., as the private event would end at 11 p.m. This was only advertised on their Facebook page and an obscure Instagram post. Otherwise, a vast majority was completely left in the dark. It was already 11:30 p.m. and there were at least a hundred people gathered around the designated tents. The bouncers had NO IDEA how to organize the lines and they constantly contradicted each other. One bouncer forced our already created line to move to a new tent and then another bouncer forced the line to move back. I, along with everyone else, was pissed because we were the first ones in that already formed line. I noticed here in the Philippines, locals choose to avoid conflict and would rather suffer in silence by choosing to stay silent. However, I am NOT one of those people. I told the bouncer it was not fair to allow this new line to cut ahead of the line that was already fully formed. The fully formed line was moved to one area and then back again because of another bouncer's irresponsible negligence and lack of information and organization. His response? "Well, this line ahead of you doesn't have too many people." There were at least 25 people in that line. I strongly responded, "It doesn't matter. We were here first and we moved because we were told to move by a bouncer who was clearly misinformed and knew nothing. This is all extremely disorganized." I could tell the bouncer was nervous I would either get him in trouble or incite a riot amongst the angry crowd so he created a separate line for us. Even being in the front of the line, there was more waiting. Already annoyed, I did not appreciate being left in the dark, literally. It was not until around 12:15 a.m. when I was able to temporarily restrain my irritation over the highly disorganized event and I kindly asked the woman in charge of validating passes, when we would be able to proceed into the venue. She responded positively and made a phone call. Five minutes later, passes were then being validated... only to be slowed down by iPad scanners that were malfunctioning... AGAIN, JUST AN ABSOLUTE DISORGANIZED MESS. I'm glad I opened my big mouth because we all would have been left completely in the dark, just aimlessly waiting. At least things got done after I spoke up. Whoever is running The Palace Pool Club, you literally need to get your team and all that shit together. You all NEED to COMMUNICATE. Not just amongst yourselves but with the people who paid their hard earned money to see a show at your venue. Don't leave us hanging in the dark because you all WILL get cursed out. The Palace Pool Club, I hope this serves as a lesson to be better prepared for future events because this one was a disaster. Flume was the saving grace of it all. ***ALSO, who the hell approved a private company event literally mere hours before a major show by an international DJ that has been heavily advertised on social media since the SUMMER?! I do NOT see ANY logic in making such a decision. You all obviously thought you could get the venue cleared out in time and maintain order but you were all dead wrong. I think it was mere luck the event proceeded as scheduled by getting everyone inside within the hour. Marc Naval, the Palace's resident DJ, deserved a slightly longer opening set and Flume deserved to be treated with greater significance and respect with an artist of his stature by reserving that night to be solely HIS.***

My friend posed a good question when we went here for the very first time: "I wanna go back here,…read morebut when?" and it's not a 'when am I available again' but rather 'what event will merit me to go and drink here'. The venue is small and intimate, hidden away in one of the less busier streets of Makati. It's dark and quiet except for the music-played directly from vinyls with nothing newer than 1985. Their drinks are original (and complex!) cocktails served by bartenders in white lab coats. The place is a hodgepodge of things and it doesn't seem to fit the Filipino concept of drinking out. I'm not going to bring friends I haven't seen in a long time here to catch up because we'll be making too much noise. The place is so classy and a bit expensive you won't be going here if you want to be blackout drunk. This is also not a place to 'meet people' and there isn't much place to dance around. Basically, you go here for the novelty of being here. It's like a really nice place (Instagram-worthy) with pretty cool drinks (their Pink Lady has egg yolk in it!) where you can hang and have meaningful conversations with a few friends.

I don't know how I can say any of this more politely, but I am a firm believer that in an organization of such high status ladies and gentlemen should be the ones serving ladies and gentlemen. 1 - Our transaction left me feeling like my money had been deceitfully stolen by our waiter Mike. I verbatim asked if SC is gratuity/tip. Mike's answer was a confident no - so I asked for some change from a larger bill which resulted in two more bills way bigger than what customary tip should be. This left me and my girlfriend who's stomach upset by the meal in an awkward situation of really not wanting to ask for change again because of how long menial tasks took. Essentially I felt strong-armed into an what for me was an uncomfortable position. Sure I could have said something but I was brought to an uneasy place where I thought I was purchasing an upscale experience. (I only googled what SC was once I got home) 2- The pizza had a 4cm puddle of oil in the center - yuck. 3- I ordered a cocktail which was improperly made multiple times, so poorly I had to speak up. On the re-delivery it looked sloppy and tasted like what was done was the addition of water and a heavy citrus squeeze. It was a simple and classic drink that is standard for every bartender to know. I didn't ask for a mocktail or whatever made up drink that was. 4 - What upset me most was Mike sitting at our table without a reason or invitation, very close to my girlfriend. This was extremely inappropriate and left us feeling like boundaries were crossed and uncomfortable. I enjoy connecting with local staff of places while traveling, but in the proper time and place. This transaction was done very wrong. 5- Was the DJ faking it? He left for like a half hour and the playlist continued. I was half a room away and I have to say it was loud and aggressive music for the vibe of the crowd which were mostly a lively elderly bunch this particular evening. This is the first time I even wanted to leave a 1-Star review. Since I only leave 5-star reviews I will continue to do so here but with this as a warning. Rooftops are cool but there are others with better views and better service than what Mike delivers. Can someone tell him that his behavior seems to be misaligned with how the organization he represents presents their hospitality services? Dang. I didn't want to post a review while feeling upset so I slept on it. Unfortunately it was disrupted multiple times from unusual (for both my girlfriend and I) digestive issues at both ends of the tract if you know what I mean. They have a full menu for food; they have a full bar. But before you exercise your urge to tip, double check your bill. The menu clearly states they there is a VAT and a service fee. A brief, joking conversation with a bouncer took an unexpectedly dark turn. When I lightheartedly asked if anyone had ever tripped on the spiral staircase, he replied, "Only if I throw them off." Joking or not, for someone responsible for patron safety, this felt in poor taste and sounds like he wants to look or sound intimidating. It's a remark that unfortunately sticks with you.
