The largest outdoor home in the world to monumental pieces of artwork from rightfully famous artists. Looking out over the Beartooth mountains this art venue doesn't just serve as the viewing place for art installations, it is also home to a performance venue where the likes of Yo-Yo Ma has given a concert to 200 randomly chosen visitors who have won the famous Tippet Rise auction and paid their $10 fee. Hiking and Art, what a combination! I discovered Tippet Rise last year but was too late in reserving tickets. I am glad to report that I have made a visit and it was spectacular! It was more than I could imagine and the experience is worth telling over and over. The location is about 2 hours Northeast of Yellowstone National Park. It is a tad secluded but that is part of it's allure. It is the right amount of misplacement. The county/city will not allow signs to be put up to help visitors so follow the GPS wisely. It is not difficult to find. There isn't too many turns or roads to take. There are about 5 - 6 enormous sculptures location within the property, including a piece loaned by the Smithsonian. The furthest piece is about 5 miles one way. Visits are allowed to bring their own bikes with helmets or simply hike. There is also a shuttle service so hiking and biking is not a commitment. Jenny was the staff member shuttling all the visitors around and she was amazing! She was friendly, so knowledgeable and kind. She added to the fantastic experience! The property was all ranch land and is rented out to cattle farmers so there are cows and sheep roaming all around. It is a great site to see. The center does provide food for purchase. All the food is prepared and sold by Wild Flower Kitchen. I had their fruit salad, garden salad and grain salad. They were all delicious, simple and local. Their oatmeal cookie also hit the spot. Tips: - Bring sunscreen even on a cloudy day. - Be sure to check in and check out. - Bring hiking shoes and plenty of water. Pros: - Large groups welcomed. - Tours are provided, only $10 each. - Such a beautiful area. Cons: - Only open 4 months out of the year. This place is a hidden gem and I hope more people visit! They are well organized and they've got a great system. They always keep into account the visitors' safety. Everyone is friendly and enjoys what they do. Be sure to reserve and visit! read more

We had hike/bike reservation for the day and really looked forward to biking the property. There were 4 of us, all professional women over 55. We checked in at the security gate when we arrived and the guard was very friendly. One of our friends had her 15-year old terminally ill dog in the car which she could not leave at home, but planned to leave in the car with windows open while we were out biking. One of the volunteers who greeted us in the parking lot asked us if we were leaving the dog in the car for the day. We told her yes and she nodded and told us it was fine. When we returned to the parking lot, we sat on the bench to eat our lunch and the dog got out to stretch. Suddenly a truck approached aggressively screeching to a stop right in front of where we were sitting and a man leaned out from the vehicle and asked who's dog it was. Our friend told him it was hers, and he proceeded to scold and aggressively berate us for bringing the dog on to the property. We nodded and agreed and proceeded to put the dog back in the car, but he continued to angrily and aggressively yell at us for several more minutes, even questioning whether we really had reservations. When he finally finished harassing us, he drove to the top of the hill across the road to watch us to make sure we were leaving. After looking so forward to this trip for months, we left feeling harassed and creeped out. If we had not been a group of older women, I'm sure this man would not have verbally attacked us the way he did. I do not fault him for telling us we were breaking the rules by having the dog. But the way he harassed us was disgusting. It was also very creepy the way he came screaming up in his truck and stalked us until we left. I won't even comment on the rest of our experience at Tippet Rise because what I described above completely ruined our day here. I would never go back or recommend this place to anyone. read more

I have planned to visit the Tippet Rise Art Center since I read an article describing the setting with lovely views. I planned my summer trip from California to Montana so that I could visit. So, I was extremely disappointed this morning when the guard at the gate told me that I couldn't enter with my dog, even if I leave him in the car during my tour. (Explaining that sheep dogs on the property could be vicious - I can't imagine that the Center would allow vicious dogs near its guests....) The website says 'pets not allowed' - so I knew that I wouldn't be able to hike with him on the grounds. However, I didn't know that they weren't allowed on the property at all. Even the National Parks allow you to bring your pets in the car - recognizing that pets cannot be left in hotels or campgrounds unattended but many are comfortable in their 'mobile kennels' and that many people travel with their pets. I suggest that the pet policy be modified or at least more prominently and clearly displayed on the website and also noted clearly in the e-mail confirming reservations. read more
