Instead of writing a "review," I am copying part of an email I recently sent Elite Martial Arts in…read moreSW Austin, TX bc we are just so pleased to have found them: "...Your dojo has been a shining light for us. I know I've said it multiple times, but I wanted to express it again - I only wish we had come to your dojo when we moved to the area years ago. You have something very special. From each of the very dedicated staff & student volunteers, to the way you emphasize technique, encourage the development of strength & power in fun, competitive (but not-harsh) ways & games, expect & follow-through with respect of all, focus on the positive, have high expectations, challenge everyone to work for the "clubs," & explain the "why" behind the directions (like, "break outward with your hand bc it will block your opponent's possible punch" etc). Thank you for making your program financially affordable. Thank you for explaining things in simple, understandable ways as well as demonstrating them yourselves. Thank you for giving students a voice. Thank you for allowing student volunteers to help - it gives the kids someone to look up to & envision themselves one day being able to do that. Thank you for repetition so that new skills/information are learned & old skills/information retained. Thank you for allowing my son, who has found a positive "passion," to come to your dojo so many days a week & multiple classes a day. We appreciate all of you & value your hard work, commitment, & time. Gratefully, Jenny D.

He loves his teachers, Mr Herman, Ms Sarah and of course Sensei. Their way with the children is so amazing, helping the overactive ones focus, bringing the shy ones out of their shell, and doing it all while having fun. I love how they respectfully interact with the kids and at the same time teach them manners, discipline and focus. If I could give them 100 stars I would. They earn it every time, we've never had a less than stellar experience here

This class has been wonderful for my son, and there are several areas where I think this school truly excels. I find that Master Um truly teaches discipline by example: he is very calm and respectful in his interactions with the kids, and encourages them to offer their best behavior. His positive attitude helps shape the eagerness and attention the students bring to class. In addition, the classes have a handful of fantastic youth serving as student instructors. These older students are all overwhelmingly supportive and set a wonderful example for the younger crop. As far as belt progression, the syllabus for each rank is clearly communicated to the students, and they are always aware of what skills they need to learn before being eligible for belt testing. While beginner to advanced belts might be in the same class, Master Um partners students in a way that each can benefit from grappling with a parter of similar skill and weight. In addition, several drills and exercises are performed to provide the necessary athletic basis for the sport. Classes are small, and all students get the attention of their teacher. We left a traditional karate school to join Master Martial Arts, and I am so grateful we did. Master Um provides a very positive learning environment, and ample opportunities to develop the skills and conduct for the martial art of your choice. Definitely give them a chance to train you (adult classes! yes!) or your child.

But everyone was friendly and the atmosphere was fun and encouraging so I kept going back. I've been training for a little over a year now and I absolutely love it. It's not at all what I expected. Jiu Jitsu is equal parts physical and mental and allows me to clear my head and stay in the present moment like nothing I've ever experienced. It's like an amazing workout paired with a couple hours of meditation. There is an endless amount to learn which keeps it interesting. And while I didn't start because I wanted to learn self-defense, I walk with a little more confidence knowing I could defend myself in a real world situation if I ever needed to. There are lots of great instructors, each with their own unique teaching style. The head instructor, Richard Giberson, is a black belt under Relson Gracie. He is super talented, funny and truly wants to help his students learn and progress. If you're curious about Jiu Jitsu, I highly recommend coming to a class and checking it out. Great instructors, great group of students, and an all around awesome school. 6pm Wednesday is a "Fundamentals" class. It's only a hour and is geared toward beginners and people working on getting better at the basics!
