I applied for a job at this shop, and the subsequent interaction with the owner was quite eye-opening. I'm a self taught gardener with well established experience. To showcase this experience, I decided to make a portfolio of my work. One look at my online portfolio and the owner accused me of owning my own plant business and refused to even interview me. I have a feeling she took one look at my public profiles, and saw images of myself within my portfolio, saw I was Black and made up an excuse to not hire me. I think it's ridiculous she didn't think I'd see right through her tactic. I'm kind of delighted to see this establishment doesn't even have a 3.0 star rating on Google reviews AND YELP- someone including the observation of her blatant racism toward customers. Good. I've passed this shop countless times, and I finally had a minute to stop by the other day. It looked too magical from the outside to pass it one more time! It looked equally magical from the inside. Though somewhat narrow and small in size, this shop was spotless and very tastefully put together. I was surprised to see products other than plants for sale, such as soaps, diffusers, and home decorations. I was there for a plant, so I asked one of the associates working there for some tips. She was knowledgeable and happy to share bits of information about the plants that caught my eye. All of the flowers and potted plants were lovely and looked healthy for the most part. Just keep in mind that everything is a little on the pricey side, but I'd say that it's all worth the higher cost. I brought home a snake plant, and I'm excited to return to this little shop for more! read more

My husband stopped in to buy an anniversary arrangement - he even brought the vase he wanted filled. They prepared the sorriest excuse of an arrangement for $80 - four small dahlias, one day lilly, and three mini sunflowers, but tons of filler. There is no design or artistry to even justify this price. It's like $10 a stem at this price. Unfortunately, he was too shocked when he picked up to say anything. All the comments regarding the attitudes and rudeness are true, and while the curation of items has a fairly OK taste level, it's all overpriced for the merchandise's reality, particularly the plants and flowers. There are many more florists who do not price gouge and whose flowers are fresher. This shop clearly does not have refrigeration, the costs for both plants and flowers are marked up so much and add to it the lack of artistry, as stated in the other review, it is not worth it. Pretty windows, but you can look and keep going. You are better off with your local florist who will work kindly with you and you'll have a fresher better experience, all around. read more

Lovely little shop with nice aesthetic sensibilities. I would recommend taking a walk through here to get ideas on what plants and loins you like but I cannot recommend giving them your business. The pricing scheme is insulting and bordering on criminal. Currently, they have an Alocasia in a simple terra cotta pot that is market to $85 from what should be under $10. Other price increases are less drastic, but nearly every plant I looked at was around double what it should be. Mind you, they sell other things here too (soaps, lotions, household decorations) and I cannot speak to the pricing on those. It may be fair. If you live in the area and are willing to put in a bit of effort finding your own pots, I would recommend Premium Foliage & Flowering on Baum Blvd. It's nothing fancy, but it's more than fairly priced. And if you are looking for a plant that is not in stock, they will order it for you. Happy planting! read more

Some background: For a guy, I'm picky about flowers. I typically specify my own arrangements in shops, and I appreciate quality products and service. I am also in the market for a go-to flower shop in Pittsburgh, so this place definitely seemed to have that potential... I stopped by today well in advance of Valentine's Day, like the responsible husband that I am. I must say, the quality of flowers, arrangements, and accessories did not disappoint, they were exquisite. I was excited when I got in there at first. HOWEVER, that excitement was squelched by what seems to me to be some good ol' hoity-toity-ness by the attendants. The first one I encountered was sort of nice, but notably distant, and a bit of a minimalist conversationally (which is strange for sales). She was awkward with me generally, either unable or unwilling to really engage me about their products in detail. Perhaps she was just new to the business, who knows. And for me, one exchange doth not an entire impression make. So onward. With the second attendant I was hoping to get a bit more service as I took an interest in some potted plants right beside her. But rather than engage me, instead she just looked at me, smiled faintly, and walked away. Again, weird if you're trying to either build lasting rapport with customers or to make a sale in a moment. That exchange was awkward too. But hey, maybe this is just one of those places with nice things but where the attendants don't really know the products. So assuming best intentions, onward. I end up finding this all-white arrangement that was really gorgeous, so I tell them I like it and I ask about pricing. The second attendant tells me that it's $75, but also to immediately say that they can make it smaller...They can make it smaller! Unprompted! Haha! I mean it was not a big arrangement, any smaller it would be too small. That was clear. So in my head I'm like, what vibe am I giving off that makes you think I need to be under $75 bucks for flowers on Valentines Day, of all days? What part of me screams "Giant Eagle Flowers Guy" to you?!? Let me know so I can change! lol. The whole experience there was filled with awkwardness, with a splash of absurdity and insult. Any of these encounters in isolation, I brush off. I brushed off two in this tale alone. But I'm old enough to know when an establishment is giving me the whole "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" bit. I just didn't know that could happen in a flowershop! read more

I have occasionally frequented this shop over the years most recently today. I'm impressed by the selection of fresh blooms that I imagine are hard to come by in these parts. I can only imagine how gorgeous their arrangements are based on the layout of the beautifully curated shop. Lots of luxury toiletries available for sale like Diptyque that make great gifts. Great selection of cuisine and interior design centric coffee table books. They also have a collection of hand sewn pot holders near the front in an abundance of whimsical patterns. Things are on the pricy side, but little luxuries aren't cheap and the merchandise is of high quality. Staff is not overly friendly and there have been times that I've walked in and haven't been acknowledged. In this day and age when wealthy people tend to be unassuming it's plain stupid to be rude because it puts people off and costs you sales. My visit today I was greeted by a couple of friendly associates who were really helpful. read more

This is a wonderful place. When you enter, you're hit with the aroma of blooming flowers. They sell a variety of exotic orchids that brighten up the room. I'm especially fond of coming here in the Spring time. They take entire branches from trees and allow them to bloom right in the store. The colors and smells are amazing. Along with flowers, they also sell bath items such as French milled soaps, body lotions and perfumes. The quality is top of the line but so are the prices. My girlfriend and I love coming in here just to see the flowers, their wares and their two big dogs sleeping on the floor. read more

Yesterday I received, without question, the most exquisite bouquet from Toadflax. My family had been through a lot this past month, but this arrangement was so colorful, so diverse, so beautifully orchestrated, that it absolutely brightened my day and lifted my spirits for the evening. Beautiful things in this store.. Too expensive in my opinion but my main problem with this place is that the two experiences I've had with the one owner, he was extremely rude to me. I happened to be in there when the store was closing (I had been in there maybe 5 minutes) and he turns to me and tells me that the 'store is closing and it's time to go home now.' At first I thought he was joking but he was completely serious and quickly walked away from me. Like I've said in my other posts I love supporting small independent businesses but I don't appreciate being treated disrespectfully. A little kindness and friendliness goes a long way, which I disappointingly didn't receive here. Likely will not be shopping here again when there are equally nice and talented florists in the area.. If I could give this store 0 stars I would. I have lived in Pittsburgh for 15 years and EVERY single time I go into this store not a single employee says hello. They have nice things....overpriced but nice. Just as the other reviewer indicated the staff is unfriendly and pretentious. I grew up in Fox Chapel and come from a wealthy family and have been around have been around plenty of pretentious folks but these people take it to the next level....I have money to spend....probably more than the owners of this store and I am disgusted with them. Stop in here for all of your overpriced candles, orchids, and meditation books and scented everythings. Although I probably would never purchase anything here, it's a nice little shop owned by a couple of nice guys in the heart of Shadyside that's good to stop in when you're in the neighborhood. The ambience here is the highlight, with an aroma of goodness and soft soothing music playing in the background. I love this store. I love the people in it, they are funny, helpful, and tolerant of the foibles of their many customers. They have wonderful flowers, yes; but they also have unusual and undiscovered books, a few antique things,lovely soaps, linen towels, and tea --just things you wont find anywhere else. The flower arrangement was quite small for the price of $85. When I called to express my disappointment in the size, they apologized and was told that was what I ordered. They would not accept that the size of the arrangement was overpriced. I told them that i thought $55 was a more reasonable price. They refused any refund and would not offer anything for customer satisfaction. I spoke with the manager who spoke with the owner about my complaint. I would not recommend Toadflax. read more

I wish I didn't have to give any stars. I went in today to get an arrangement. And as I walked in the 3 women stopped talking and stared at me like I was the devil, himself. I am an African American man and the demographic of Shadyside visitors are not black (let's be honest) but these ladies acted and treated me like they have never seen a black person on Earth. I had to ask these women if they were open because USUALLY when a customer enters a facility they are greeted with a "Hello, what brings you in?". After I finally got them talk, the lady that was "helping" me seemed uninterested and her body language and tone let me know that she did not want to be bothered with me. I work in retail and the way I was treated in this place was absolutely terrible! Do not recommend at all. read more

This store is gorgeous and expensive. It has the most beautiful and healthiest plants, the best curated selection of gifts, select antiques, lighting fixtures, cookbooks, shawls, scarves, and home decor items in the city or the region. it is a lot cheaper than going to New York which is where you will have to go to get a selection of this quality. The staff there will quietly stand by while you browse. They are kind, intelligent and helpful but not aggressive. You can get cheaper plants elsewhere. But elsewhere is often out of plants, does not have as healthy plants, or is far out of the way when you need them. You will not find flowers like theirs anywhere. An orchid my sister in law sent from there was gorgeous, enormous, and lasted for 6 months in full perfect bloom. They pay a high rent, treat and pay their staff properly and are knowledgeable. Why do their staff stay on and on year after year? Because they are treated like human beings. There are lots of places where you will be abused and insulted by prices and sales people. But this is not one of them. You will pay for location, selection, curation, intelligence. They are shy, quiet, thoughtful, unhurried people. But whatever you buy there will be of the highest quality and durability and beauty. read more
