I rarely get over to the backwaters of Metzger so when a friend asked me meet him there for lunch I had to look it up on Yelp. Turns out this is a great little dive bar and very much to my liking. Very friendly patrons. 99% blue collar men who work for a living at tough jobs. Construction. Timber. Occupations that involve serious manual labor. Quite a few were motorcycle savvy. Although this is not a "Biker bar" I was treated very warmly the minute I walked inside. As to the food: the clam chowder is VERY good. I'm a Boston boy so very fussy about clam chowder. Toby's has a good bite to it and they aren't stingy about the amount of clams in it. It's been a while since I've eaten out so I had your basic cheeseburger and fries. Both were good. I'm off the alcohol (at least for a while) so I had coffee to shake off the cold from my 25 degree (minus 0 with the chill factor) ride over there. They seem to have a good selection on tap. The waitress and barkeep were great. This is a nice, neighborhood joint where the townies hang out. As I mentioned they were all very hospitable towards me. Your mileage may vary. Outstanding drinks. I just discovered this neighborhood bar. I ordered a dirty martini and usually am only happy in manhattan or Dubai when I order this. Robbie made my martini with the vodka I requested and it's fabulous! He asked me if I wanted ice chips which most bartenders omit. This is a down good local feel - bar. So incredibly rude to so many patrons and had a foul attitude speaking on her coworkers that she worked right beside during my visit- insinuating that speaking down on her coworkers would better our experience. Slow paced, bad attitude and she definitely made a negative dent in my overall experience. I would rather have Steve Urkel as my bartender. God she sucks. read more

I had the worst experience in this place. I've literally had nightmares about my experience there. I was confiding to a friend today about the trauma they inflicted, and she put me in touch with an attorney. I looked up the reviews on here just out of curiosity and I couldn't believe my eyes. So my boyfriend and I are apparently not the only ones who got kicked out of this place for doing nothing wrong!! Not only that, the 2 men that were flirting with the bartender nearly jumped us as we were being escorted out. It was the most surreal experience I've ever had. I kept asking her (the bartender) what we did wrong and all she said is she didn't like my boyfriend. The one guy was pretty beefy and he was acting like an idiot. If it wasn't for me standing between him and my boyfriend - I'm sure he would have started getting physical. He was definitely looking for a fight. We hadn't been drinking, but I'm pretty sure the bartender and her 2 homies had been. Now that I see some of the reviews at least I know what we did wrong. We weren't one of their homies. This was my first visit... It was a hot Friday and I never do this on a work day... But it was my birthday the day before and it was time for a beer (Little hair of the dog, don't YA know) Very much a locals hangout! A Very nice bartender knew EVERYBODY (Except me) and what they were drinking before they asked! It is a very casual sports bar atmosphere... Great place to watch the game. They are on the Alaska Air - Dine Air program (for now), so you can even get extra miles for having a cold one. I did not eat, but the food I saw come out of the kitchen looked good. Happy Hour Review: My FIRST time here...well maybe not. It USED to be a video store...I still have the ID card. And I need a HAPPY, HAPPY HOUR. And I immediately recognize the porno section back by the pool tables in the back. Bartender says it still is. I'm on the rebound and looking for a COLD, CHEAP beer...fast, It's hot, I've been stuck in traffic and I just paid $ 5.75 for a pint at the VERY Thirsty Lion...and we've agreed we should see other bars. Sure they have those fancy craft brews, but I feel like a "sure thing" (guys..... you know what I mean). I check out the regulars at the bar....mostly Pabst cans....OK. "Pint o Pabst". I get mine in a high class GLASS. A full pint. And it's $ 1.75 !!! I tell my $ 5.75 beer story to the bartender...she wants my receipt to show her boss. I have another shot on goal within minutes...then they bring out free happy hour pizza. AND they have "Toby" T shirts for sale (Nephew's name)....I already like this neighborhood bar. I think I'm in for 3 beers, four slices of pizza for $ 5.25.... well, plus $ 10 for the t shirt. UNFORTUNATELY they also have video poker. ANd after my third beer (here) plus one at TL....my judgement is not quite up to my game. My money clip was thinner, but I did NOT get a DUII on the way home. I'm a winner. Will visit again. Seriously, if there was ever a real "Cheers" in the Metzger area, this would be it. The food is very decent, and the drinks are generally VERY strong and flow aplenty. Video poker to lose my money, and a giant plate of nachos to drown my sorrows in. The sandwiches are yummy, and they're all served with original Lay's potato chip, the best in the world, I think. The customer service was horrible. My waitress made me wait 22 mins for two cheap taco (as she called them) n 7" personal pizza. Both waitresses passed by me not asking if I was ok or needed anything. I then ask for a box it is at this time she decided to ask if I need anything!I am from the east coast n this is the first time that I have been out in Portland n got horrible customer service. I have been to place three times. Every time I go they are very friendly and provide good service.The food is good pub food and they have a full bar and a decent beer selection. I had the pleasure of meeting Cassy tonight, wow. I walked in about 1030 and ordered a drink. 20 min later I wanted to order some food and asked for the late night menu, she continued to tell me she only had chips and salsa. First, I'm pretty sure that is illgeal. Second, after I asked about tacos, which are on the menu, and she said, and I quote "do you see how busy it is?, I don't have time for that". Then I literally said, don't you have to serve food at a bar? She continued to tell me how busy they are and "she doesn't feel like cooking anything"? Sorry but I'm the customer and your menu has multiple items that require cooking? If you are too busy then add a staff member, if you can't offer customers food then you shouldn't be operating an establishment that serves beer/alcohol. Period. Worst service ever and then she cut me off cause I returned chips and salsa which I didn't ask for. This was my neighborhood bar and now I will never go back. This place is a disgrace. If you're near the Washington Square or you're in Tigard. This place has had the same bartender for a while. Good selection of plain old craft and then the domestics---sometimes they throw out a free pizza for everyone to enjoy. Couple large screens to watch Nascar, Sports, the Ducks....Really a lot of regulars. Owner is there often....Good spot. Nothing too special, but reliable and not full of creeps. I've been to Toby's three times, and I found it spontaneously when I was driving around with a friend trying to find a local place to have a drink. It was such a pleasant surprise to find this welcoming place! The karaoke DJ, Ellie and the bartenders were so friendly and nice, as well as the other patrons in the bar. I don't go to bars regularly, but when I decide to go out, this is definitely a place where I can feel comfortable. I went to Toby's last Saturday night, and I had such a great time! i got kicked out of Toby's for telling a customer to chill out after he was extremely loud in the bar. instead of asking him to be quieter he threw me out for good. this seems very unfair to me. besides that the staff is very whiny about waiting on you. the food isn't that great. all in all it was a terrible experience. read more

I like a good dive bar, and I like hanging out where the locals hang out when I travel. Having said that this place serves neither of those. To call it a dive bar does the good dive bars of the country a disservice. It is in a small strip mall store front, it stinks, it has no ambiance. The "locals" are a bunch of fat middle aged men that look at you you when you walk in because you're not one of them. That part I can handle, but they don't even talk to each other, they just sit there being fat and old and keeping to themselves. One word: BORING! Don't waste your time. read more

Me, my wife and friends started going to Toby's when the best bartender in the world, Beth, started working there. We've been going there for over a year now, with us making a few visits a month to Toby's, and I give the place four stars for these reasons: 1) Great service! Beth and the other bartenders are super nice. They are friendly, attentive, quick to pour you a brew, or mix you a strong drink. They all are willing to chat and share a story or two. 2) Food is good. The menu is smaller (sandwiches, pizza, and tacos are the items we get there) but the items are well priced. Pizza is delicious! We love taco Monday's; 75 cent hard shell tacos. Yum! The bar puts out a free pizza sometimes for happy hour, around 5 pm. A free quick snack to go with the strong drinks. 3) Stuff to do: Free pool on Mondays and games are 50 cents otherwise. We play a lot of pool at Toby's. Other players come and share the table and we always have fun. I don't gamble, but there are video poker machines if you are so inclined. Lots of tvs for sporting events. 4) Fun regulars and atmosphere. Toby's is a working person's bar with a friendly, middle-aged crowd. We like the eclectic personalities we meet at Toby's. We've had some pleasant, funny, and far-out conversations with new-found drinking buddies there. 5) Best of all, the prices are great. We can afford to have another drink because the drinks prices are the best in the area. I'll mention the one thing that detracts from my experiences there (and why I rated four stars). The music is inconsistent. There is no house music system, rather one must plug quarters into the juke box for tunes. Some patrons play music that I like and others don't. The juke box is not always available. Toby's is high on my list of favorite bars. Check it out sometime... read more
