My 84 year old mother was a client of Edward Jones advisor, Kent Beard for approximately 10 years. In 2017 I began helping with her affairs and in July Mr. Beard advised me that due to pending regulation changes her account would need to discontinue transaction fees and move to managed fees (over 1% per year). This change would cost her many thousands of dollars each year. I told him other investment companies were not making this change and I asked him if there was any option that allowed her to continue transaction fees, and he said "No". So my mother reluctantly agreed to begin paying his managed fee. A few weeks later I was told that Edward Jones did have a transaction fee option. I questioned Kent Beard about this in conference calls with him in August, September and October; throughout this time period he maintained there was "no transaction fee option". Finally I uncovered documentation confirming availability of transaction fees at Edward Jones. When I confronted Kent Beard he acknowledged transaction fees were available and he attempted to justify his untruthfulness by saying he was moving all his clients to managed fees to reduce problems that might occur if the new regulations were to passed. The net result of Mr. Beard's action was he increased his client investment costs and in return he received higher commissions. The proposed regulation that Edward Jones advisor Kent Beard used to move his clients to the higher cost managed fees was overturned. Because his deceitful actions mislead my mother, she contacted Edward Jones' home office and was able to recover the unnecessary and excess commissions that were paid to him.
