An odd caveat to the story is that the hygienist also works with Dr Cardenas 1 day a week. I thought this was a bit odd but as a past patient of Dr. Cardenas I went ahead and met with her. After looking over my gums she suggested approx. $7,000 worth of surgeries were needed to fix my alleged issue. I found this to be a bit much particularly because her office claimed they couldn't bill my new insurance and I would need to pay out of pocket and then personally bill my insurance for reimbursement. I decided to try a new dentist due to the odd referral circumstance and expensive diagnosis. The new dentist never mentioned any need for surgery and 2 years later my gums are healthier than ever. This however isn't my reason for taking the time to write this review. A year or more after meeting with Dr. Cardenas I received a bill from her office stating that I owed the full amount for the office visit, even though they stated to me they could bill my insurance for the visit. Turns out her office had my old insurance information and not newer current insurance carrier. After speaking with the office manager Amy Jewitt multiple times and her with intense hostility and a raised voice it was explained to me that I would need to pay the bill or they would be sending me to collections. At this point I called my insurance company and asked for records and they found that they had never received a bill from Amy or the office as Amy had been billing the old insurance company and was not getting a response back from them. My gripe is that after not getting paid by the insurance company for over a year the office of Dr. Cardenas chose not to either call, email or send a letter asking me for help or clarification. They simply just kept submitting invoices to the wrong company.... I could have fixed this if they would've followed up and simply asked for confirmation regarding my insurance. And after they didn't receive their money they simply started billing me for the invoice. I am very disappointed in Dr Cardenas and her staff and will be sharing this complaint with local dentists within Kitsap County t as well as any State Agency involved with medical and insurance billing.

So, that said, I swung the dart at the board and decided to try Thomas Knight DDS. It was a lucky strike! The staff are very friendly, the location is easy to get to and convenient, the Dentist, Dr. Knight, super nice, and I think I just got the best teeth cleaning I have ever gotten. I felt like the whole experience was a good one. I have a little dental work that I am going to have to deal with, but this dentist did something I have not ever experienced. I have certainly had X-rays taken of my teeth, but he took actual photos, which was unique in a couple of ways: 1. I've not ever had a dentist photography my teeth before, and 2. He went over what he was seeing with me. I can read a photograph way better than an X-ray. He takes X-ray's also, but it was novel to actually 'see' what the heck he was talking about. I think it was the best dental experience I have had, where I actually understood why he was recommending what he was recommending, and not just agreeing because he's the expert. Then the cleaning. It started off like any normal cleaning, lots of poking and assessing gum issues and tooth scraping (my least favorite part of a cleaning) and then they used some crazy tool that used a ultrasonic vibrations and water to continue to clean under my gum line and to dislodge what they had scraped but was still in my teeth. Crazy. My teeth felt really clean already, then they did the normal polishing, dental floss, etc. Again, the staff seemed very knowledgable and friendly. A nice combination.

Well, I've been to a couple appointments with Dr. Knight now-- I'm not nearly as nervous anymore, and I think I even kind of enjoy going!! :) One thing you'll notice is that everyone seems happy and genuinely interested in their clients-- every time I've been there, the staff have smiled, remembered my name and what we talked about last time, you can hear occasional laughter, and more than occasional singing! I'm not kidding! There is usually music playing in the background, and it's like a music trivia show with Dr. Knight and his assistants, I love it! The ladies at the front desk, Ms. Gail and Ms. Karen, are super kind, personable and helpful with scheduling and making payments. And if they have changes to the schedule, they will give you a call to see if an earlier date/time works better for you. Ms. Lorna and Kristina, the dental assistants, are incredibly kind and patient, especially with anxious patients like myself! They are friendly, funny, and happy to answer questions about how things work. Dr. Knight (a fellow Californian like myself!) is also incredibly patient, generous, and congenial! Even though he was busy, he took the time to get to know me a little as a person. I liked that he took photographs of my teeth, in addition to the x-rays, and very clearly showed me and explained to me what was going on with my teeth. He made sure that I was comfortable (no pain!), and he went above and beyond to make sure my teeth were in great shape. Bainbridge Dental Care, you've got a client for life! I'm so happy to have been referred to Dr. Mao after I asked for a second opinion. Recently I…read morenoticed additional sensitivity, suggesting the recession might be worsening. Considering I've already shown some bone loss, this makes me nervous. My dentist said nothing about this, but I asked for perio consult. The first opinion I got offered no solutions for sensitivity, wanted to do a few grafts to protect teeth from falling out. Dr Mao, on the other hand, suggested pedicle grafts in addition to the ones first opinion offered. While the healing of this seems to mean a bit more swelling at first, it addresses the sensitivity issue, and my teeth look so much more normal! I've had issues for over a decade, always a background consideration for if/when things get worse, and that was becoming more present with choosing foods based on sensitivity. If the pedicle grafts restore coverage so I'm less afraid to look in my own mouth, background worrying about worsening, that is awesome, I had never heard this option before. And I love that I don't have to worry about the cold of eating carrots! All of the office staff is friendly and effective. I emailed about a question and got a call back the same day; they even put Dr. Mao on the phone to answer my questions. I was pretty nervous about the procedure and I got the text from my pharmacy about the Valium prescription I requested almost immediately after getting off the phone. I've just had my second procedure with Dr. Mao. He's great about making sure questions are answered, and it says something that he puts his cell number on the care sheet. He gave me a call around 8pm the evening of the procedure just to check in. I feel very cared for and trust his opinions and his work. He takes pictures before and through the healing process at follow ups. I haven't asked to see these yet, but I think it will be fascinating to do so down the road. I had to go out of network from my insurance to see him, but I'm so much more confident in his care, I think the extra cost is worth it.

More recently I had a crown come off of a tooth that had very little surface left to attach to it. After having it explained to me I arrived at the decision that I needed a dental implant. This required removing the tooth below the gum and readying it for an implant. The things that impressed me most was their professionalism, my lack of any pain during the removal of the tooth and inserting the implant post, and the quickness of the procedure.
