We had a repair done there it was replacing an axle in a Toyota tundra. They didn't understand how to operate the tire lowering device so they cut it out (yes, we can no longer carry a tire under the truck as they cut the entire assembly out). Instead of admitting their problem they said Toyotas were stupid and we should have a Subaru instead. We also had a tune up done on a Scion XB. WOW- what a disaster!! The car nearly overheated on the way home. Got home and checked it out. Every single fluid was extremely low. Transmission, radiator, brake and washer fluid. 17,000 miles later the car starts mis-firing. Turns out they never replaced the sparkplugs and wires as we were charged for. They refuse to do anything because they never dated the ticket and said it had been more than 3 years. It was not. They even checked the mileage but decided they weren't going to do anything. I have personally witnessed Todd over-revving engines, doing burn outs and other things that would be called "beating the crap out of customers cars". Especially if he doesn't like you. read more

If you prefer to deal with non-corporate human beings who haven't lost their souls, you can keep reading. Late last year I bought a 22 year old pickup truck. In the months since, I've been to five places with a simple request: Check the old beast out and give me a list of things wrong with it that we can get to work on over time. I got a lot of "11-point inspections". One benighted Ford dealer (in AZ, not SC) cleared a check engine light for me, but $500 later admitted that they had forgotten all about that inspection thing. And of course I heard the lament everywhere of "we're down to two, or three, techs" ... because no one wants to pay a living wage anymore. (Don't get me started, okay?) This place is very different. Rough as hell around the edges for sure. But the one rare thing that matters, they got. I walked out of there feeling that these people cared about me, about my ancient beauty of a vehicle, and making sure that my first visit wasn't going to be my last. It won't be. I was driving from Austin, TX through Albequerque, then to Silver City, trying to go all the way to CA and back.. Somewhere around ABQ my car started screeching - not like a banshee, but enough to make me think something wasn't quite right. Driving into Silver City it got worse, and when arriving at 3pm, I called the first three places listed and all were booked ("I've got enough to eat until the end of the week, sorry.") When I called Todd and explained what was going on, he was so friendly and said he could look at my sad car right away. He was super welcoming, laid back, and knowledgeable. He pretty much immediately knew it was something with the brake pad after doing a test drive, and sure enough, all of them had just about had it. He also replaced my serpentine belt, which had a tiny bit of life in it, but I asked if he could do it along with the brake pads since it would give me peace of mind. All in all, the experience was easy, quick, and pleasant, and the price was super reasonable. Our 1998 Dodge truck's 'check engine' light came on while out in the mountains on the weekend, so we beat it back home. I visit family in Silver City a few times or more a year. I by chance decided to get an oil change and tire rotation on my truck before heading back to California. I called Todd, was given a quote over the phone, headed over, knocked out the service and kept his word on the price, which was a great deal. What else could you ask for from an auto repair when you are unfamiliar with who can service your car in the area and your car breaks down? Todd was honest with me over the phone that he could diagnose my car's problem (an old BMW 330i), but might not have the equipment on hand to fix it. I took a chance based on the other favorable reviews of the business. Not only did he promptly fix my car, but he made suggestions for how to prevent some future issues with "old faithful". We originally went to R&Ls service center (terrible idea). Those guys tried to rip us off, recommending several new parts while being grossly condescending. Todd, the guy who runs this place, rules! I got stranded in [wonderful] Silver City after my right front strut straight-up broke (Yeah, separated at the shaft like a broken bone). Of course, this great hamlet was basically closed down for the weekend; the only shop that was open was a Big O and they weren't doing anything but minor stuff on a Sat. I randomly found Performance when searching on my GPS. Todd answered the phone, and said he wasn't open, but "always wants to help people who are traveling". Well, help he did. He took the car in the shop, ordered the part, gave us a ride and everything. He even came out late to meet us a few nights later when we came back to get the car. Didn't charge an arm and a leg, either. Can't say enough about this badass dude; totally down-to-Earth and none of the BS tactics you get with a lot of other mechanics. The owner "Todd" then got really weird with me and got snippy saying things like "what do you want me to do about it" and "It must be something else". My car is running worse now and the AC is not working! I plan to take Todds AXIS motors to Small Claims court! read more

Master mechanic in a no nonsense garage! We were visiting from LA when our car overheated coming into town. A local resident saw us on the side of the road and stopped to help. He tried to find a mechanic to help us. He called several people with no luck. He gave us the names four mechanics and their garages. One of the names he gave was Todd's Axis Motors. We had our car towed to the only AAA recommended garage in town. On Monday the diagnosis was a blown head gasket but the mechanic said he could not give an estimate because his pc was running slow. He never called with an estimate as promised on Monday. Tuesday morning we went back to hear we needed a new engine. They said there was a knock in the engine. We were quoted $7,000.00 for an installed rebuilt engine or $4,300.00 for a used engine for our 2000 Toyota Avalon. They even charged for the diagnostic tests that were incorrect. Since there was no water mixed in the oil and no visible leaks we were suspicious. We called Todd for a second opinion. Todd thought the diagnosis was strange so we towed the car to him. He said to give him an hour had about hour so he could look at it. Called us about 45 minutes later to tell us there was no knock or water in the oil. Wanted to run one more test and to call back in another hour. Todd changed the oil to check for metal in the oil and found none. Further testing showed the only problem was a bad radiator cap!!! Needless to say the cost was MUCH less that the other garage. Todd told us he would be confident to drive back to LA with no problem. Todd uses the diagnostics of looking at the smallest possible problem then going on to the next. Todd and his crew were friendly and concerned for our needs. He even entertained our 8 year old grandson. read more

We were back in Silver City recently and stopped in Axis Motors for an oil change and a refill of our DEF. Since Todd, the owner, knew we were traveling, he checked the ML over carefully and found several minor issues plus a failing battery. Yes, we were aware but hopeful it would last a while longer. --It seems hot weather is tough on batteries. So we had it replaced at a very reasonable cost. Yesterday, Todd called just to check that all work was satisfactory and to thank us for stopping by. Don't go here. was just overcharged $95 (1 hour of labor) on a brake job. Invoice quoted "3 hours labor" yet we had only been there just under 2 hours. We inquired into why they overcharged us for an extra hour of labor and they replied that they always charge the "average labor for a job". What a bunch of bullshit! I'm always a little skeptical when it comes to auto repair shops but sometimes you have to let go and defer to professionals. Todd and his crew know what they're doing, do it well and his experience with domestic and foreign cars (Asian and European) mean that you can keep returning for quality and affordable work no matter the make. Lastly, I expect good work no matter where I go and rely on reviews to help guide me and know that sometimes you can't please everyone no matter what you do and although I wasn't present to see those that posted unfavorable reviews, I find it highly unlikely that the guys at Axis did anything but give an honest and fair assessment of each individual case and would speculate that more personal attention to due diligence on one's personal vehicle would negate the hefty price tag associated with the lack of regular maintenance as well as the shock that yes, not checking your oil over the last 40k miles is a bad thing and if you're leaving an oil slick wherever you park but then it stops is a clear indicator that no, it did not fix itself but has run dry and the next step is called a seizure much like the one you're likely to have when handed the bill for repair or more likely replacement and rightfully so for simply not checking and changing your fluids regularly. Live and learn is all I can say and if you're privileged to drive (no, its not a right) you should know how to do the simplest examination of your vehicle or ask someone.... perhaps the guys at axis and if you're not mechanically inclined, allow them to do those changes for you. The plus side is that they may tell you that you've got an issue that needs addressing now or soon while still manageable and affordable because as stated previously. They're fair and honest and won't ever steer you wrong, pun intended. Plus he's always got cool swag on hand and am awaiting a cool t-shirt that I can buy for myself and friends back home. Review and experience for Todd's Axis motors on highway 180. We have a 2008 Jeep commander that we bought with a bad engine. We had Todd's put a a new engine with a 3 year unlimited mile warranty. Well 94 days later the new engine blew. We had it towed to Todd's and his exact words were. "Well I don't know what you want me to do about it"... We have a warranty fix it. That he did not. It sat at his shop for around 2 months while he was in Texas 90% of the time going through the warranty and dodging our phone calls and his phone with the information he had was magically "dystroyed" and claimed warranty had denied the claim. Per warranty photos were to be sent that were never sent and after the gm reached out Todd never responded. We have proof and he claimed the heat tabs were destroyed that a bad oil change was what caused this. After speaking with the warranty and finding out Todd just didn't want to repair it we had it towed to another shop. The engine has been covered by warranty and will be repaired. The heat tabs were in great condition with no damage. It had blown two rods it wasn't a bad oil change. Be aware and do not do business with Todd's axis motors. You will regret it he never once attempted to make this right. read more
