Let me preface this review by saying: I think Todoroki is best when you order AYCE. Otherwise, prices can be a little steep. For lunch, it's a little under $20 and for dinner I think it's around $25. I'm not going to say it's the best sushi I've ever had, but it's very good, especially for the price. It's also BYOB and they don't have a corkage fee. That, combined with AYCE, makes it a great place for group dinners or if you want to sit for a while and catch up. Service is usually pretty middle-of-the-road, nothing remarkable. I have also done takeout once from Todoroki and they got our order completely correct and it was ready on time. My favorites are the godzilla roll, the unagi nigiri and the spicy salmon roll. AYCE also includes salads and appetizers, including gyoza, fried chicken, house salad, seafood salad, edamame, soup, tempura, etc. Overall, Todoroki great sushi at a reasonable price where you don't have to pay for booze because you can bring your own. Which, all combined, is pretty hard to find. read more

came here for the all you can eat sushi lunch ($16.95/person) and was impressed by the quality of the rolls. My fav's were the shrimp nigiri, maguro nigiri, and shrimp tempura roll. Oh, and you get unlimited appetizers, which was nice. Try to sit in the tatami style table. You have to take off your shoes so make sure your socks don't have holes and your feet don't stink. read more

I've been on this low-carb diet for the past two months now and my sister and I went here after seeing how jam-packed Joy Yees was across the street. We opted in the the all-you-can eat dinner and I must say that it was not bad. Between my sister and I, we ordered about 4 rolls and nigiri as well as the appetizers. Food-wise, it was pretty good. Though, the day I went was hot and murky and although the restaurant itself is very hip and modern, I felt as if the whole place was slightly damp, humid and sticky, as did my sister... Anyway, for the most part, the sushi is pretty good, place is trendy, and good location. read more

We ordered sushi delivery today, an alaskan roll and 4 pcs of tuna nigiri. I eat sushi a LOT, and I know good fish when I see it/taste it. The fish was not fresh - tasted & smelled way more fishy than it should have. The roll was poorly made and fell apart. The entire order was 19.50... for one roll (only 6 pcs) and 4 pcs of nigiri. The price was way too high for the less than mediocre quality of the food. They added a delivery charge without mentioning it so we didn't have money pulled out for a tip. The delivery guy wouldn't accept the money until we added a tip. Poor quality food, and poor customer service. Bummer, I was hoping this would be a gem. read more

Staff was very friendly and service was great. However taste was lacking. Ordered the all you can eat lunch sushi. I typically order spicy tuna and was left underwhelmed, same goes for one of the specialty rolls. Best looking was the hibachi lunch with fresh veggies and shrimp. Would not recommend. read more

I just left that place 10 minutes ago food was not good no chicken in the fried rice no real hibachi taste no green tea or desert after dinner not even a fortune cookie place was uncomfortable the service was bad and the food was small portions for the price.. its plenty of better places to eat at for that price..and the steak was tough. read more

Absolutely loved this restaurant - before even eating the food, I was already impressed with the service (I was asked three times while deciding if I had been helped yet), the chopsticks (a clean break between the two, no splinters), and the stylish and joyous environment inside the restaurant. The food, though, impressed me more. I got to taste three different rolls, and was fairly impressed with all of them, although some more than others. My least favorite was the Philadelphia roll, which featured cream cheese that was entirely overpowering. Next in line was the spicy salmon roll, which was a little bit plain, but still incredibly tasty. It wasn't as spicy as expected, but tasted like real salmon. The next best I tasted was the tuna crunch roll, featuring spicy tuna and crunchy tempura chips. This one was definitely spicy, and didn't need any wasabi. It was also a relatively simple roll, but a bit better than the salmon. By far the best was the dragon roll, with shrimp tempura and cucumber topped with avocado and eel. This roll was more whole in flavor, and I would've eaten at least a half dozen more. The better rolls were definitely a bit pricier as they were signature rolls and not classic ones, but they were worth a bit of the up charge. Overall, while this restaurant isn't necessarily five star with linen tablecloths, I liked it a lot. read more

When my friends told me about the all you can eat, I ignored their ravings because I had experienced all you can eat sushi and I always disliked the quality I received, but I had a GREAT experience and was ecstatic about the quality even though it was all you can eat. Sushi Para is my favorite AYCE in Chicago and I rate all places in comparison to Sushi Para. I know some might feel that it is a low bar to set, but I love the flavors there and I am not expecting the most amazing fish rather tasty menu choices. Todoroki delivers with good flavors at a decent price. I have only come here for lunch, but my only complaint is that there are a bunch of great options that are only available on the upgraded menu. The lunch menu is a bit basic and lacks creativity, but it is still good. The service is always on top of their game and they do a good job of moving the food quickly. You are able to get in and out in less than an hour and will be very full. This is a place I can only go to once every few months, but I really enjoy it when I do. read more

My favorite sushi in Evanston. It's funny... there is a ton of sushi in Evanston yet I haven't had much that I'm impressed with. I had lunch here and the sushi was by far the best I've had in the area. They have a fabulous lunch special for sushi whether you want two rolls or three. If you are a hungry hungry hippo they even have an all you can eat sushi option. I can't speak for the hibachi since I haven't had it yet but I'll be going soon to try! Nice little atmosphere too! Kind of intimate. The service wasn't extra special but it didn't stand out as horrible. They get 4 stars because its the best in evanston, but no way the best I've ever had. This review is for the AYCE sushi. This has been my favorite AYCE sushi spot I've found. I've gone to one in Hyde Park and Las Vegas and found both to be subpar. This spot hits all the right notes. The price is now $17.99 and no longer $16.99 for lunch. No biggie. The space is tastefully modern with numerous seating options. The wait staff was pretty attentive. But I was most pleased with... wait for it--the appetizer options! The gyoza, shumai, house salad were divine! I only ended up ordering two of the Rainbow rolls because I had seconds on the appetizers. Everything was quite tasty! I don't expect much when It comes to AYCE sushi unfortunately but Todoroki has turned it around for me. So glad I found this spot sooner than later. read more

My family used to go to Todoroki 3-4x a year but no more. We typically spend $200 each time but was told I would be charged a $6 fee when my 19yr old daughter only ordered a Miso soup. The restaurant was half empty. I told the waitress that I refused to pay that fee and she sent over a manager who asked me to order something else for the $6 fee. Really!?! The menu does have a comment in fine print about how you MAY be charged $6 if u don't order a hibachi dinner but really bad policy. They lost my business and everyone who I would recommend to them as I frequently did. Not with the $6! I'm eating right now next door at Red Hot Chile Peppers - HIGHLY RECOMMEND! read more

NEVER AGAIN. I DON'T SEE THIS RESTAURANT SURVIVING TOO LONG. The ratings keep going down. Too many rules for wanting to sit with your friends in the Teppanyaki area. They charge $6 sitting fee if you want to order from the regular menu, if you don't have 3 other people ordering the teppanyaki. They also sneak in an 18% tip on the bill, so the wait staff and the cook could care less how they serve you. The guy cooking was so sloppy - he slopped on some soy sauce on our food and called it Teppanyaki. He barely got the food in our plates, telling us he had to do this 10 times today, as in, he was tired. The table was full of food that missed our plates after he was done. NEVER GOING BACK, even for regular menu. read more

Looked great, but didn't even get through the front door. this place has too many promotions and when I tried to use one that we had through yelp they said that they'd already taken too many reservations that night and we could come back another day. fortunately we had not bought it yet. there were plenty of empty tables. Reviews on poor customer service seem spot on. Manager reached back out to us the following day, making us a couple of generous offers due to the mix-up the night before. Alas, the true test of any business is how they deal with any issue that comes up. I'm going to state the facts here. Based on these facts, I give them three stars. There were six of us that went to Todoroki on a Saturday night. My spouse and I arrived at 6:30pm. Two others arrived at 6:40. We all decided to go with the eat all you can menu. We ordered the appetizers first. Then at around 7:20, we submitted the sushi order. Our waitress came at 8pm to apologize and said that our food is being prepped. At 8:22, I asked the waitress about our order. She says it is still being prepped and she apologized. At 8:35, I asked our waitress for the bill to our drinks and appetizers because we're all starving and we want to go across the street to eat at Joy Yees. She apologized and said the food is coming. I stopped one of the male managers (not wearing the black uniform) and asked for the bill again. And he said he'll ask his manager to help us out. A few minutes later, the female manager walks by and I asked for the bill. She apologized again and said that the food is coming. I mentioned that the table to my right came after us and they are already finishing up at this point. She said it is based on how our orders are submitted but she said she cannot do anything about it. Someone from my group asked for a discount because of the long wait. The manager apologized again and said she could make sure that the second batch will be prioritized but she can't give us any compensation. The sushi arrived at 8:46pm. I made a copy of our order. We asked the waitress to tell us what arrived. She noticed that our order is not complete. So we ate and waited for the rest of the order. Finally, the female manager arrived at 9pm to asked us how everything is. I replied that our order was incomplete. I reminded her that she promised our order would be prioritized and hoped she can do something about it. She apologized and left. The food came at 9:06pm. We ate and then my friends ordered a little more. While waiting for their sushis, our waitress came with two platefuls of dessert. They are fried bananas with ice cream which is absolutely delicious. When our bill came, they comped most of the sodas. Overall, my anger dissipated toward the end of the evening but I wished the manager could've said something like she'll see what she can do to appease us. I think they did try to do good but the response came too late. And that's why I gave 3 stars for effort. read more

Wow, what a cluster! I wouldn't be surprised if this place went out of business within the next few months unless they overhaul the (lack of) management and service staff. Had a 7PM reservation and gave up after a ridiculous 30 minutes of waiting with no end in sight... on the bright side, I saw enough shenanigans to know I'll never come back. One table hadn't gotten their appetizer after 1.5 hours, was served the wrong entree, and had yet to receive the bill after asking for it the entire time we were standing there waiting. The host even sat us at one point only to change his mind and make us go back to waiting, then proceeded to give away three tables to larger parties. When tables finally opened up no one was around to bus them. I pointed out two open tables to the host and a busboy but somehow there was an astounding lack of any movement to clear them. Multiple tables were meandering around looking for anyone to bring their check or find their long lost food orders. On the bright side, I discovered Kansaku and was seated immediately without reservations and had a lovely meal. Best of luck Todoroki - you desperately need it. read more

The food is well portioned and more then fairly priced and while not overly adventerous everything is well executed. The All you can eat for $23 is intriguing and even of I hadn't had a good experience. I'd come back just for that. read more

pretty good sushi! all you can eat is pretty great, especially for its price. bring a few friends and it's definitely worth it. i understand they get busy. the first time we went was on a sunday and so our orders came in less than 10 minutes each time. the second time i went with some friends on a saturday - much busier and it took over 45 minutes for the second round. we also ordered a lot, however, right when they got significantly busier. still, good food for the price! pleasantly stuffed! just be wary that things may take longer because other people are ordering just as much food as you (or more). read more

Sushi is good, atmosphere is great, and the place is neat and clean. HOWEVER - Be careful with the all-you-can-eat sushi. I walked in as part of a group of 6. We weren't sure what to order at first - we didn't want to all get the AYCE since it's expensive, but none of the other options looked good on their own. Then our server came up and mumbled something (his English wasn't too good) about "sharing" the AYCE by getting 3 AYCEs for the six of us. We took that to mean that 3 of us could get AYCEs while the other 3 could get single dishes from the menu, and we could all share the dishes together in family style. The server didn't bother to clarify. After ordering two rounds of AYCE sushi, 3 dishes from the menu, and 45 minutes of sharing the AYCE with each other, we were disrupted by our server, who informed us that we weren't allowed to share the AYCE and that we would each be charged for the AYCE. We were surprised and angry - why didn't they tell us in the 45 minutes, and why didn't they make their practices clear in the first place? As a compromise, the server said that they would only charge only 4 of us for AYCE, since "it was our first time and we didn't know." By this point I had lost my appetite, and only wanted to get out of the place. To make matters worse, the server came up a second time and told us that the manager wanted to charge us for 5 AYCEs, not just 4. Classic business practice of getting you to agree to a price and then up the price while knowing there's a much better chance that you'll agree to the higher price since you already agreed to the original price. Overall, the AYCE is dangerous. They don't intentionally try to screw you over, but nor do they make their policies clear before you begin to eat. I felt like I had been tricked into paying a lot more than I had to. read more

I've been going to this place since it opened and every time I've wanted to leave a bad review until now at which point they've pissed me off so much that I actually created a Yelp account in the middle of my meal to write a bad review. The hibachi is overpriced and is mediocre at best. The AYCE has taken 1.5 hours and we still haven't gotten our first order. The sushi quality is terrible, and the AYCE is all loaded with extra rice. You're better off going to Konsaku or Sea Ranch. The service is rude and the business only cares about profiting off customers. read more

Absolutely terrible experience on multiple fronts. The food: Out party of two both ordered the all you can eat menu for $27. Generally speaking I am skeptical of any place that offers an all you can eat sushi menu, but the ambiance was nice and the selection on that menu looked great. The appetizers came out in a timely fashion and weren't awful. At the same time they weren't anything special. The gyoza was tasty, but was brought out so hastily that all of the sauce had spilled over its place on the plate and made the bottom of each dumpling soggy. The fried chicken was simple and unremarkable. Served with a bbq dipping sauce that seemed out of place in a Japanese restaurant. Upon finishing the apps we were in for a 43 minute wait for out sushi without so much as our server stopping over to fill our water or offer an explanation/apology for the excruciatingly long delay. They didn't appear very busy so I'm not at all sure what prompted this obnoxious lack of service. After waiting nearly an hour for our sushi I was served a spider roll with a suspiciously old tasting soft shell crab. The tempura breading was too sweet for my taste in the Godzilla roll. The tamago was super thin and on the bland end of the spectrum. The sanatori roll was the only saving grace. The spicy tuna that sat atop the roll saved the otherwise poorly prepared shrimp tempura beneath. My partner felt much the same about her maki. The green tea mochi ice cream was among the worst iterations I've ever come across. Service: We probably saw our waitress four times throughout the hour and a half we dined. Each time she stopped in for a moment to pick up our sheet and then left without any questions, concerns, or niceties. She forgot my seaweed salad and after eating so long for the rest of the meal I was simply desperate to get out of there and couldn't ha e cared less about the omission. My husband and I had the same experience that Holly mentioned below (posted 1/31/2012). We went to Todoroki on a Friday night. We have not had water for 30 minutes. We asked our server 4 times to provide us with it. We waited for 30 mintues for just water. Additionally, the server brought what we did not order. We ordered Yakitori, but Tatsuta Age came. After we pointed it out, she tried to make an excuse. She insisted that she told us that they were out of Yakitori. But the truth is that she just mentioned that kitchen was very busy now and they needed 30 minutes or so to cook Yakitori. Even if she had explained that they were out of Yakitori, why didn't she ask us whether we would like to have Tatsuta Age instead of Yakitori? Furthermore, its price does not deserve the quality of food. We also had Fillet Mignon. It was about $25. But the half of the plate was occupied by fried rice. The meat was not Fille Mignon at all. We spent two hours totally to have water, miso soup, salad and fille mignon(we did not have Tatsuta Age). After we left Todoroki, we headed to Tapas to have better meal.
