Not really for a "big shopping trip" if you buy a lot of Asian food, but fun to see a place that is only Japanese items instead of trying to find what you want in a big Asian supermarket that carries items from many Asian countries. Adorable shop that makes it feel like you've travelled out of the country. They have such a huge selection of Asian foods, but also cute ceramic dishes, novelties, and even toiletries. Staff here is friendly and super fast with checking out your items. Only thing that would make this better is if the sign was easier to see and the aisle are very narrow so expect to bump into others or have to maneuver around when it is busy. read more

Firstly, my condolences to the family of Chong. My parents Chad often made a special trip to Richmond to visit Chong and shop at her store. We were very saddened to hear the news of her untimely passing. That said, I took my father whom recently had a stroke to shop today. After paying for our groceries my father had to use the restroom . I asked the young gentleman who rung us up if he could use the facilities. He said no , they do not have any public restrooms and we could go down the street to the library or capitol one. I asked if he could make an exception as my father is elderly and disabled . He was like, no sorry. While I understand there is a no public restroom policy it seemed insensitive and thoughtless in this circumstance. Going down the street a block is a huge deal for an elderly and disabled person . I can only imagine Chong would be horrified . I am disappointed to not patronize Tokyo Mart any longer. I enjoyed the products and the nice visits with Chong. read more

Tokyo Market does a decent job. It allows Richmonders to have access to a number of Japanese and generally Asian options for the kitchen and pantry along with snacks, sweets, utensils, and other knickknacks. The staff are usually friendly and the store is always clean. It's a tiny space so I try to avoid weekends though that's not always possible. Most items come at a certain price due to them being imported or hard to find which I find explains anything that seems a little pricey. Overall Tokyo Market is a cute place, just off the corner of Cary and S Colonial. Stop by one day if you're ever taking a leisurely constitutional through Carytown. read more

This has become one of my regular go to stops when I'm in Carytown. There aren't many Asian markets in Richmond but even though it is a small market there is a wide variety of food selections. They had expanded the store since I first started going. I like to buy my ramen, fish balls, banana milk, and treats here. I've been here a couple times to get some Japanese-specific snacks/cooking ingredients and I've been pretty happy with what Tokyo Market has to offer! They recently expanded the store so they have an even wider range of goodies and more space between the aisles!! To me, its a little more expensive than what you'd get in bigger cities with larger Asian populations but I'm still happy that there is a store like this in RVA! The store owner is super nice and parking is easily available around Carytown or the nearby neighborhood streets. There is $5 minimum for cards so just be aware. read more

This little market is so cute! Stepping inside I felt like I was in Tokyo!! They have a nice variety of snacks, teas, noodles, trinkets and so much more! The staff is very friendly and engages with their patrons which I love. Although the address has this shop listed on Cary street it's actually located on a side street of Cary and is a little hidden. This place has been renovated since my first trip here and I am torn if that is a good thing or a bad thing. On the plus side, it is now twice the size and can fit twice as much cool stuff that you can buy. On the downside, it now has twice as much cool stuff that I want to buy. My wallet is not happy about the renovation, that's for sure. We went on Sunday and I had to limit myself to buying some unusual flavors of Kit Kat (peach and cheesecake), some ramen from their wall of ramen, more bottles of ramune soda than I would like to own up to (melon, strawberry, yuzu lemon, and others...), some milk tea, some canned coffee, a lucky cat bell for my kiddo, some honey butter chips, the BEST milk and fruit lollipops... The list keeps going and I regret nothing! It isn't just for junk food either. They have legitimate grocery things too, from octopus to dashi, rice to crispy garlic in oil... And unlike some things in this cute little district, a lot of the things are actually priced like grocery store items and not specialty store items, if you catch my drift... They are less expensive than most of the other items in the area. I do feel like a bull in a China shop because there is a LOT of stuff and it can be kind of hard to maneuver around people in the aisles. I took my kiddos with me and it was pretty hard to maneuver all of us and the shopping basket through the aisles, so maybe I'll just bring Hubs next time while the kids are at school and I'll only have one person to try to remind to not bump into people and shelves. Recently moved to the Richmond area from a high Asian population city and was apprehensive about the Asian grocery offerings in the area. I was so happy to discover that Tokyo market carries most of my Japanese food essentials! They don't sell produce, but that's okay. They have a wide selection of natto, big bottles of my favorite ito-en teas, chazuke, miso paste, golden curry roux, hondashi, and other pantry staples. The owners are very nice and helpful. I'm not sure why when I looked at the pictures on Yelp, I got the impression that this store was 30 times it's actually size; but I definitely did. It's a pretty small store. It's like the size of a studio apartment in New York City. But I'll tell you, they make amazing use of the space. They have a TON of stuff, it's very well organized, The majority of the store is dried foods and what not. Then there are a couple of small portions near the front that are filled with all sorts of bowls, chopsticks, glassware, teapots, cooking gadgets, etc. Definitely had to stop myself from being miniature panda food picks. But I did end up getting a real cool mug with some Daruma Faces (Japanese Good Luck Symbol). All in all a great little job; has a lot of interesting things! What a gem in Richmond! Having just moved from California, I started digging around to see if there were any good international markets in the area and stumbled across this Japanese market. They are a fairly small store but they are packed with all sorts of japanese goodies from candies to cookware to ingredients. We love having some basic japanese pantry essentials in the house and we were do excited to get everything we needed from here. I don't want to bring down a small business owner with a low rating, but then again, they shouldn't want to either with less than good customer service skills. I asked a question about a desert treat I'd been having a hard time finding, and her response was short of "we don't carry everything Japan has..." Mmk. Obviously, lady. I was simply asking for help naming or identifying the treat. With her arms crossed and a stink face in full bloom I didn't stay much after that, feeling unwanted at that point. I went yesterday and was very happy that we do have a Japanese store in Richmond. I am not Japanese but love the food, teas, pottery and stationery. There is a bit of all of this and I toi und the perfect big noodle soup bowl. I love green tea and tHey have a nice variety of loose leaf and bagged green teas. I like the pottery sectIon. They also HHY be a nice variety of sake sets and tea sets. There are some Japanese kitchenware also. I wish this were a bigger store but really like the variety of things available here. What I also found fun is that my noodle bowl was wrapped in Japanese newspaper. Fun! read more

The owner is named Chung I believe...and she is a real sweetheart, very helpful, welcoming and genuinely happy to see you! This market has a very great curated selection of mostly Japanese and some Korean sauces, vinegars, gochujang, fresh ramen noodles, instant ramen noodles, miso soup, all sorts of Japanese gadgets and kitchen utensils, also a nice little selection with things like kurobuta pork gyoza, some really good kimchi, and most of the other sundries you would expect like rice, soba noodles etc... We are doing a road trip and stumbled upon this small but well-stocked store. They had everything for us to make quick meals in the hotel's small kitchen. We got panko, okonomiyaki mix, yakisoba style noodles, okonomiyaki sauce, powdered nori, sushi vinegar and mirin. Since we already had shoyu and dashi, these items rounded out our on the road cooking needs. The proprietor was friendly and I was pleased to find someone to speak Japanese with. Incorporating farmer's stand vegetables we've already made yakisoba, panko crusted fried tomatoes and okonomiyaki. read more

For Richmond, this place is phenomenal. I am an enthusiast of all things Japanese (have been there twice as an exchange student, and studied the language for several years), and so I have a discerning eye for what is authentically Japanese. Young Bin and Tan-A have a decent selection of Japanese sweets, but if you want the most robust selection of Japanese items you have to visit Tokyo Market. They even have tea accessories, such as cups, mugs, and bamboo matcha whisks. It may be a small store, but it is organized perfectly and somehow manages to cram in a ton of goods in a very small space, something which Japan is known for. The owner is a nice lady, but several times I have been in there, she seemed paranoid that I was going to steal something. I could spend 30 minutes in this place, and so it perhaps makes her nervous when a customer is there for an extended period of time looking at many items very closely. Other items they carry include Pocari Sweat, Ito En, Bikkle, canned milk coffee, Ramune, red bean ice cream, frozen matcha, udon, yakisoba, the list goes on and on. Check this place out! read more

I stopped in here on a whim today, and I LOVE IT. It's clean, there is a lot of stuff packed into a small space, but everything is fresh and well-organized. I was looking for Moshi (which are basically ice cream balls wrapped in rice paper) and I found 3 varieties at Tokyo Market. Plus more varieties of soba noodles than I could ever imagine needing. And, in the frozen foods section I saw a whole shelf of korean foods like kimchi and pickled radish- everything you need to make good Korean food at home. Plus, they have lots of saki sets and bowls and cooking utensils, which is convenient... For the space it occupies, this store has a ton of stuff, and it's really neat to go in and browse around. The lady who owns it is very sweet and funny, and she traded jokes with me and my husband when we came in. Having been to some larger stores where the staff doesn't give non-Asians more than a passing sneer, this was a totally welcome change... I can't wait to go back! read more

They do not have fresh produce but has a very small frozen goods. Souvenir type goods & ceramic dishes line one wall of the store. As for the service, a Korean lady was on the phone the entire time I was there speaking in Korean, no hello (I looked at her and said hello) nor thank you, nor goodbye... This little place has so much to offer! Don't get me wrong this place is tiny, but is very clean and well organized with plenty to see. We found some foreign flavors of Kit Kats we'd been eyeballing at a different store online that would've cost $12 a bag to ship (score! They were $6 here). I love Tokyo Market! I enjoy cooking and often go through various phases of cooking - I've had a Thai curry and Korean banchan phase, to name a couple. My latest obsession has been trying Japanese recipes like Ochazuke and Corn Potage, and this place has all the specialty ingredients that I need, conveniently located on the outskirts of Carytown. Not only do they carry essential Japanese cooking ingredients like sushi rice, miso, and dashi, but they also happen to carry my favorite Japanese sweets and snacks, namely melon pan/melon bread, Takenoko no Sato (chocolate covered bamboo shoot cookies), and Cookies and Cream flavored Pocky. Even though it's a small store, I always find something new every time I stop by. I only recently noticed the little freezer next to the counter. (This is where you can find the ready-to-eat dango and melon pan!) The lady working there is very sweet and welcoming. This store is truly a hidden gem and I'll miss living so close to it. read more
