This is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN STILLWATER! I always order the small ribeye with the sweet broth. I smother it in the sweet sauce given to you once your meat is served and wrap it in cabbage, and it's just to die for. I always leave having eaten too much food, but incredibly satisfied. This place is definitely an acquired taste, and you have to find the meat (and broth/sauce combos) that's right for you. I love that they give cabbage instead of lettuce (unlike many hotpot places). You can also reorder rice and not be charged for it! So great!! The environment is low-lit and comfy; it looks a little old in there. The service has always been so great, with waiters/waitresses that are so patient and more than willing to walk you through the menu. I've never waited for very long there, either. It's always been a great and positive experience. The pricing is on the higher side, and for a college student, that isn't ideal. I usually eat here once a month, or more if I can afford it. I'd eat it daily if I could, seriously. That would be my only complaint about the restaurant. But in this economy, I don't blame them. Incredible food; abysmal service. Stillwater has the luck of enjoying a kitchen staff that understands how to execute shabu shabu well. They also have somehow paired this lovely kitchen staff with some of the worst servers in existence (the bar for quality service is already low in a college town and someone Tokyo Pot has found people that can't even meet that low standard). During a 70 minute dinner this past week, we saw our emotionless server a complete total of two times. Once, when we were able to place a drink and food order, and then again, when they came by to ask if we were done and unceremoniously leave the machine we could pay our check with. The kitchen staff did a fantastic job of bringing our food (which was wonderfully prepared and tasty), but we really could have used another round of drinks, at a minimum. This was our last meal in Stillwater after visiting from Los Angeles for a weeklong professional development class at OSU. Service was amazing. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. I wanted shrimp but I didn't want the seafood combo so they substituted the fish out for more shrimp. The broth was on the sweet side but it was still so delicious! Tokyo Pot is a really fun place, and we wonder why does Stillwater have this and not Manhattan (KS) where we live!? Eric R. made reservations several weeks in advance because we knew it would be a busy weekend in town for the Mid-South Gravel Race. When we arrived on time for our reservation, we were initially seated in a this weird dark room away from the entire rest of the restaurant. It was very cold and quiet, no atmosphere. Eric R. asked several times to move and finally they relented and got us a table in the main, much larger, well lit dining area with music in the background. Our server Sophie was an absolute gem. She had waters and a giant can of Sapporo with two frosty glasses for us, and shared honestly about the entree sizes, but we still ordered with our eyes. Eric R. got the large ribeye entree, and I ordered the lamb entree. Both came with rice and veggie trays with cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, tofu and rice noodles. He chose the spicy broth and I chose the Mongolian broth. On the table were soy sauce, ponzu, and "no name spicy" which was similar to sweet chili. The ponzu was a bit sweeter than I was used to also. Then Sophie brought us condiments: grated garlic, grated daikon, and chopped green onions! We were given bowls with spoons for eating, metal chopsticks, and then spoons for getting food or broth out of the induction hot pots in front of us. We also got bowls of whisked egg which we could dip our meat in before cooking or create "egg drop soup" in our broth. We really enjoyed the experience, though I was only used to shabu shabu being with konbu in water rather than flavored broths. The other option was teriyaki which is basically the traditional sukiyaki, but the two we chose were not really Japanese-style, which is okay. It was still delicious and fun! I was really amazed when I learned our server's hometown was where my grandfather was born (5 years before Oklahoma became a state) as it is a very small town. This was a really great experience and good carbs and protein for Eric R. before his big race the next day. Really enjoyed the experience at Tokyo Pot. They had us choose between a sweeter or spicier broth. We couldn't decide between the sweet or the spicy broth, so they did a split pot for us! I'm very glad that they did because I preferred the sweet, but my friend enjoyed the spicier one. We got the ribeye and one of the seafood combos. The prime ribeye was our favorite. It was really nice that it only had to be cooked for 10 seconds. They also provided rice and egg yolk. Dipping the meat in the egg before putting in the broth made it even better! 1st visit here. Waitress was extremely helpful with ordering to time to cook the food in the pot. Obviously must be extra careful with seafood. For those who may not know the Prime rib is extremely thin sliced and cooks in seconds. High quality meats. We went with a large prime rib, lamb, and a side of shrimp. Far too much food for just the two of us. Honestly got much more than expected for the price and previous experience elsewhere. Very good broth not overly sweet. Wife can not do spicy due to medical conditions. So no idea on how spicy it truly is here. Only down side is extremely small amount of vegetables that comes with it. First time hot potters! We went on a Saturday, restaurant was busy but not crowded. Sam, our server, was excellent, she explained the menu and process in detail for us. Our group included 2 adults and 3 kids, we ordered 3 meals, prime rib, chicken and the salmon/shrimp to share and were given extra rice for each person ( for an up charge of 3.50 each!). The man and I shared the spicy broth and the kids had the sweet (teriyaki.) The food was fresh and nicely presented and more than enough for all of us. This establishment has a ton of 4-5 star reviews, and let me just say. They are ALL misleading. This restaurant is very run down, sticky, and flat out dirty (yes literally caked in dust, dirt, and left over broth) I was very excited to see what this place was all about. And what I got was such a let down. The menu is not helpful at all other than to choose "shrimp, steak, chicken or veggie" The waitresses did a poor job of explaining what you would be getting with each meal. They said we would get a "veggie platter and rice with every meal" Okay. I had 3 slices of a carrot, 3 small cabbage pieces. About 5 strands of rice noodle. Two baby mushroom slices and 1 1x1 in square of seaweed. You're instructed to place your veggies in the broth first for it to continue to cook, and then you're provided with some room temp raw ass meat to dip in an egg wash and then put on overcooked sticky rice. I love supporting local restaurants, but when the menu actually says "eat at your own risk.LMAO" I can't support it at all. Make reservations beforehand! I grew up eating hot pot so I think I may have some validity to this review. I'm Chinese and I go back to China every 4-5 years and we always have hot pot several times when we go back home. That being said, I didn't like Tokyo pots BROTH. Personally, I don't like a sweet broth. I like my hot pots savory and spicy. A little bit of sweet may be okay but even their spicy option was sweet. Their mild version was very sweet. When we told our sweet server, Molly, she brought out another Mongolian style broth but it was still too sweet. Molly told us that all their broths have the same base which explains why they were all sweet. If you like a more umami flavor then you won't like this broth but if you like sweet then this is for you. We ordered 2 ribeye and 1 lamb with extra enoki, bok Choy, cabbage, and noodles. The meals come with their own veggie platter that includes: noodles, cabbage, carrots, enoki mushroom, tofu. You also get a generous bowl of rice and raw egg. Our host, Dean, was very helpful and hospitable! He came to our table and showed us Tokyo pots method of cooking which I won't explain here since it's a bit intricate and maybe a bit confusing without being there. This is one of the coolest experiences I have ever had in a restaurant. When I opened the door this younger Asian guy ask me who I am, and why I didn't have reservations. Then he asks, who sent you? Small little place tucked off of Main Street. Nothing spectacular in appearance, but the food is excellent. It's the only hot pot restaurant in Stillwater, so it's nice to have something different . The owner is a charming lab who can often be found walking around and greeting all the guests. He also likes to let guests try little bites of things that maybe they had never tried, so that's always fun.
