We have been to Tokyo Steakhouse several times. The sushi are good. Service is attentive enough. I think i had their Ramen, but don't remember exactly what it tasted like. ha. I need to try it again. Wednesday nights are sushi and martini special nights. You can get 2 rolls for 17. Not a bad deal. I think they make them smaller. Martinis are 4 each. They are weak compared to other places. If you're in a hurry, sit at the bar. The chefs can finish up your rolls in less than 5 mins. Overall it's a great addition to Ankeny dining scene. This is the second time we are here. I wanted to talk to the manager but seems like it's useless. The only thing they are doing is to give people food as fast as possible to get you out and have the next batch sit around hibachi. We have been to many Japanese steak houses and we have never seen the restaurant cut the scallops in half!!! To make it look more!!!! This is rip off and I will report this to small business administration. They don't give you more, they give you half sliced, overcooked, thin, awful scallop pieces and charge you for the whole serving. My shrimp was half the amount it was last time!!!! Because it's Friday they rip people off very seriously. The food is substandard at best. The sushi was awful. The soup is watery taste and everything is over priced. Very very disappointed. I will contact the manager to make sure they know what is going on, but my fear is that the manager has the same attitude. read more

Ankeny's newest sushi and hibachi restaurant opened in early February 2010. I've been waiting for it to open for months and when it did, I had to give it a try. First off, I got the sushi to go. While waiting for the sushi, I spoke with the staff and bartender. After finding out that the sushi chef came from New York City and how long he's worked as a sushi chef, I had high expectations. Of course, it doesn't matter how good the sushi chef is if the fish isn't fresh. I'm always skeptical with sushi in Iowa but I have to say that my expectations were not only met but exceeded. The quality of the fish was exceptional and on par with many places I've been to on the East and West Coasts. The sushi menu itself is very large and diverse. You have your basic offerings but they also have many special rolls that I have not seen before. For this first trip, I went with a spider roll, king lobster roll, rainbow roll, dragon roll, and mango lover roll. The spider roll was okay. A little expensive for what I got. The king lobster roll was amazing. And the rainbow and dragon rolls really showed off how fresh the fish was. I'm really excited that Ankeny has such a wonderful new sushi restaurant and I hope there's enough business to keep them around for years to come. I'll be back again and will provide an update in a few weeks. Hopefully, they continue that high quality that I now expect from them. read more

Staff is super friendly and accommodating. if ordering hibachi and you want teriyaki, garlic butter or sesame finish on your hibachi grilled food it is not something they automatically ask you about so you need to request it when ordering. place fills up extremely fast after 5:15 pm so get there early to get your seat at one of the many grills they have! read more

Actually disappointed I have to write this but yesterday was such a bad experience I had to write this. went in valentines weekend and they had one lady handling seating, take out orders and rsvp. My girlfriend and I had rsvp at 6:00 along with 30 other people and didn't get sat and noticed till 6:40. For my vegetarian girlfriend wanted tofu hibachi and we were told they didn't have tofu at an Asian style hibachi which was a lie after we've been there before and got tofu. Service was eh. The wait staff in this place are extremely rude. I was ready to get up and leave but the others wanted to stay. Ordered calimari which came in a few little white slices. Never saw it this way before. Also ordered sushi which was the worst I ever tasted. There was no flavor at all in the sushi rice, and the filling in one roll was mushy and reminded me of dog food. Obviously not cooked to order. One of me and my wife's favorite places for sushi and hibachi. We take the kids, the atmosphere great and everyone has a good time. The staff is super attentive and friendly and the food is very good. Anything on hibachi is good especially the fried rice. For sushi I recommend the seafood fantasy or JV tempura rolls. Very good first time experience. Friendly staff with great service. We did not do Teppanyaki (Hibachi Grill for some), however ordered from that menu. The meats were cooked very well, not over done and cooked vegetables excellent. The Tempura starter was just OK, the batter was way to heavy and thick for Tempura. I order sushi regularly in cities all over the country. In what must be the hundreds of times I've eaten sushi, I've only gotten food poisoning ONCE. Guess where? My last visit to Tokyo will be the absolute last visit I ever make to Tokyo. Not only was the service lackluster and extremely slow (inexcusable in the early evening when there was only one other table seated); judging by my violent gastrointestinal reaction, the seafood was apparently less than fresh. The first time I was at Tokyo, sushi was 30& off. That probably accounts for my previous (very generous) three-star rating. When you're paying full price, you tend to realize that this sushi is not a particularly good value, especially since it's hard to find a roll that isn't slathered in some sort of mayonnaise-y sauce and stuffed with Krab. Not to mention the sushi chef quite obviously overlooked a piece of fish which should have been tossed out rather than served to a customer. I will say it again... if you want fresh and well-priced sushi in Ankeny, go to Waterfront. From now on, I know I will. read more

I've only been here once. It was exciting watching them prepare our food & that part was great. The food they prepared was merely okay. They forgot our sushi, but we weren't charged. The drinks were good, but service on drinks were slow. Also, majority of workers aren't Japanese but they'll tell you they are (as to not get in trouble). I don't really care their ethnicity. I care about food & service (and cleanliness). I have yet to go back. And while I don't say bad things to people about this "steakhouse" I don't recommend it either. read more

Our feeling is that the owner of the restaurant has given up on it. This was our second visit for hibachi and I can't think of any reason to ever return. Our first visit was not impressive, just so-so. The disappointment was unanimous among our 7 member party. Be prepared to be very underwhelmed with customer service skills or not greeted properly at all whether you are calling to make a reservation, walking in the door, or the chef arrives at your table. It's just a very weird environment for a business in the hospitality realm. Ok, so the staff isn't super welcoming, appreciative, or especially pleasant... but what about the food and drinks? 7 thumbs down. The cocktails were super lame. Each of us that ordered one was displeased. They were not made correctly. The soup and salad were pretty boring. For some reason the soup had barely any flavor. I've never had that happen before. The food was no where near worth the cost. The show was just ok. However the chef accidentally flung the 2 prong hibachi fork at my daughter as he lost control during his routine. Luckily she was not injured but someone could have lost an eye from this mishap. He quickly said sorry and moved on but didn't ask if everyone was ok or seem concerned. It set the tone for us to be frightened throughout the rest of the "show." The food was gross for the most part. The rice was the only thing that I would say rivals other hibachi restaurants. The chicken was dry and hard, very overcooked. The food in general lacked normal seasoning. There was gristle and chunks of fat in the meat. Multiple items made on the hibachi grill had a very off flavor to them. Either too much oil, the wrong kind of oil, or rancid oil is what my best guess would be. This strange flavor overwhelmed the flavors of the food. One of the kids complained about the chocolate milk and sure enough they barely put any chocolate syrup in it. Everything about the visit indicated a complete lack of care for the guest experience. At the end we were presented with the 18% required gratuity on our check after suffering one of the poorest dining experiences I've had in a very long time. Nothing about the visit was even remotely near the quality of Ohana's but the price was pretty similar. I consider that a gargantuan rip off. read more

When I first got here the lady seemed very irritated already. She made sure to tell me that they close at 2:30 which I wasn't aware of because I'm not from here. I apologized and said that we wouldn't be here long, let her know how big our party was, and that the rest of my party was on their way. She then proceeded to say the last call for food was 2:15. I said "okay no problem I'm sure they will already know what they want to get off the menu" I then just asked for waters and she asked if they were on their way I said yes. My point is, your customers are giving you business and making you money, be respectful of them especially if they're not from the area. Had dinner there 10-12-19 at 6:15 pm lastnite and the cook was a good showman and all but my steak was over cooked, lobster was as well and the same for the shrimp but they had good flavor so it made it ok I guess , the part that troubled me was the waiter when asked for a specific drink told my friend ( whom convinced me to try this establishment.) she was not to have another alcoholic beverage because apparently 2 drinks is to many for a none driver in a party of 4 . Nott sure if it was a joke or a sincere statement but it was done in poor taste , I know she is naturally a loud person but hardly a reason to deny a drink when there are louder parties seated behind us. read more

I don't think I've brought any friends who haven't enjoyed their time or the food! My all time favorite roll is the J.B. Tempura roll, delicious and packed with flavor The employees are always approachable and there to help. When myself and two other lady friends were ordering almost the same sushi rolls the waiter let us know there was a "almost secret" (not on the menu at the time) roll that was similar and one of us should try it so that we all weren't eating the same things. The roll suggested was DELICIOUS. The hibachi side is usually always busy and keeping people entertained. We came here back in 2012 for my cousin and I's graduation and we had a great time. Don't listen to the other reviews where the hibachi side is bad or the cooks aren't good, this hibachi is just as good or better than others. Pretty sure our waiter (or the person who cleaned our table) stole our iPhone 7. Accidentally left it on the table and came back 15 minutes later to look for it. The staff were little-to-no help, so I called the phone multiple times and then hit the "play sound" button on the Find My iPhone app. After hitting the button twice, the phone went completely offline and now goes straight to voicemail, which means someone must've turned it off after realizing what was going on. The sushi here is fantastic. Some of the best I've had. The teriyaki not so much. Most of my food was cold save the tempura shrimp and veggies, that was hot! Terrible service! They didn't ask how the food was, if we needed refills or more sauce. They over book and rush your parties out. The fire alarm went off and they couldn't figure out how to turn it off. They should have discounted everyone's food for that because it went off the entire dinner but of course they didn't. The cook didn't say a single word. He didn't even put on a show for the kids! The sauces are watered down and the soup tasted like dish water. The only good part was the bartender! She was the only worker that had a conversation with us. They also over charged cards so those have to be disputed now! This was or first and last time going here. I'm reviewing this based on drinks, appetizers, and the wait staff since I already had a big dinner when coming here for a friend's birthday party. Our waitress was nice and fast and was friendly while serving our big party. We got the miso soup and squid salad. Both were pretty good...I liked the squid salad more. The drinks were cheap and tasty. I did smell the hibachi dish that someone ordered at our table and it smell good lol. The sushi that others ordered looked appetizing as well. We went with a group of 6 and I was excited to see a sushi restaurant in Ankeny although I have since moved to Minneapolis. I had the Alaskan roll which was good. My husband had the spicy maki combo which was tuna, salmon, crab spicy rolls...with the sauce it all tastes the same and it was ok, but not great. The service was really good and the space was typical. I wasn't overly impressed with the ambiance but at most sushi restaurants I rarely am. I would probably go back as the drinks were reasonable and we left spend under $40 not including tip for 2 drinks each and sushi/soup/salad. read more
