    Tonkotsu Ramen
    Christina W.

Rich ramen flavor. It was fine in its own way. Ordered the tonkatsu and the tom yum ramen. Our friends ordered the same thing. We have similar foodie tastes and we all agreed it was ok. No true wow factor but also wasn't terrible. I guess it was satisfying in its unique right. $15-$17 a bowl. Add $4 for gluten free. Ramen noodles are made of egg so I opted for the gluten free glass noodles in my tom yum. My bowl came to $21.50. I did not really enjoy my ramen. It was not the flavors I wanted. The texture of the noodles didn't belong in a tom yum soup. I had a taste of Mr W's tonkatsu and I felt it was overpowered with a bamboo and charred pork flavor. Extremely salty as well. He enjoyed it ok but also agreed it was very rich. We all shared spicy edemame and crab rangoons. I did not like the edemame it was seasoned with a sweet and sour finishing glaze with red pepper flakes. Not the right flavor for me. Service was ok. Food arrived quickly and great presentation. Restaurant was busy for a Thursday night. Restaurant was decorated beautifully in Japanese theme decor. Quaint and fun. All in all...it was ok but not my favorite. It was nice to try a different ramen place in the Des Moines area with our ramen crazy friends.

So I an visiting Des Moines for the first time for a few days. Monday being my first afternoon, we were exploring different parts of Des Moines including passing by the State Fairgrounds, the national parksls area, Pleasant Hills and some camping grounds., This was where we ended up for dinner. My friend selected places she wanted to go but hssn't which is why we ended up here. They have sushi, ramen bowls, sushi and so much more. I chose the veggie fried ramen because I wanted something filling and satisfying. The noodles had good texture. The sauce was a mix of salty and savory. The veggies were crisp tender. I ordered the 16 oz Sapporo beer with my meal. Our server. Mary, was very friendly, courteous and informed about the menu. We asked for separate checks, which was not a problem. However, Mary did put the beer on my friend's bill. When requested, Mary did make the correction. We paid in cash and tipped decently.

I ordered to go and the only complaint is the chicken was a bit dry. Service was fast and polite. Pretty establishment, nice for couples and very clean. I'll go back again, I'd love to try some of their sushi options.

We had an amazing time, the food was delicious, the wait wasn't long, customer service was good, definitely will be back

Food was great, service was friendly and helpful. The environment was nice, as well as clean. We definitely enjoyed our lunch.

The Fire Dragon roll was delicious. Great, soft music was playing. It made it easy to enjoy our conversation during dinner. Our server had awesome suggestions off the menu. Would recommend.

After dozens of trips to Japan, I have come to love Japanese food and am a Ramen Snob. Well, Hokkaido Ramen House was a superb visit. It combined excellent food and options with an authentic Japanese experience and outstanding customer service at a reasonable price point. They met and exceeded expectations! Spacious seating options and the interior artwork produce an authentic Japanese vibe of Sapporo and Hokkaido, Japan's unique northern region. Guided by server Dash, we selected edamame and seaweed salad as appetizers, and then both had ramen dishes. My Miso Ramen was really good, flavorful, and genuinely Japanese-inspired. They have different levels of spiciness, and I picked medium so the flavors would not be overwhelming. Delicious! The remnants will be a tasty lunch! Thanks to staffer Ian for his food advice afterward, as I enjoyed his passion for their product and knowledge!

    Spicy beef ramen

I ordered the spicy beef ramen here! I will say for my order the beef fell off the bone. The meat and noodles ratio is a lot compared to other restaurants which is nice! Also they were incredibly fast with getting the food out after ordering! I think this is a good place for people to stop at if they're not familiar with restaurant ramen. The service here is incredibly friendly. All of the staff were so nice and sweet. Also the building is fairly big and spacious, they have very tall ceilings so it may be a good space for groups.

We had a great meal at Hokkaido. The service was great and the atmosphere was wonderful. Loved the KPop or JPop music playing and the nice spacious establishment. The Food: Kobe Beef Bao Buns - 5/5 definitely get them. The seasoning/spice on this was wonderful and the sauce made it that much better. Sort of reminded me of a Peking Duck Bao which I love! Spicy Beef Ramen - 5/5 I chose the Spice level of "Spicy" it had a great, beefy flavor and a Beef Short Rib in it. The spicy level wasn't spicy to me but it had a good kick for my husband. Tonkatsu Ramen - 4/5 would've given them a 5 if the bamboo shoots weren't so strong in flavor. It still had the earthy bamboo flavor but it was super overpowering. After we removed it from the soup, it tasted great! I just wish both ramen soups came with a little more broth but they definitely did not skimp on noodles or meat and I love that! All-in-all, will definitely be back! Can't wait to try the Miso Ramen next time.

Oh heck yes!!! We have been waiting in a Ramen joint to hit the area since we moved from California. This spot did not disappoint. First of all our server was given away next level positive vibes. Just a fun young many. Great attitude and service. We each got Ramen and shared an order of pork buns. This food was next level flavorful. The miso and Tom yum soups were all to die for. This is a must visit spot and will be hitting my regular stop list.

We had a 5:30 reservation & major disappointment from the kitchen & arrival of food. We waited 41 minutes for our appetizers to arrive. My sushi wasn't cold - which made me feel like it was waiting out for a moment. I will say outside of that my husbands Mongolian beef was delightful. We never received the appetizer we ordered. I ordered the Marilyn Monroe & angry dragon - I would recommend both. To give an example of their timeline - the table next to us got their appetizer within being seated 11 minutes into their arrival & those to the right of us got their entire at the 20 minute mark (average server timeline). The reason given that our order was taking time, was they behind a lot of to go orders. Again, not devastated but for sure not recommending to any friends anytime soon. Also when compensated for this - they didn't charge us for the appetizer we didn't receive (thank goodness?). And then discounted a drink & sake bomb. Honestly as someone who's served for 11+ year an entree at any other location would've been the appropriate gesture. But hey, those combined were around the equivalent of one of my rolls, so sure.

It's conveniently located in the strip mall with plenty of parking..it's the same mall off of University with Campbell's health foods, Hy-Vee pharmacy, Frederich's coffee. This restaurant still has that old time mom and pop Asian family feel it's a definite classic type vibe with Auntie snd the neices up front taking orders and the rest of the family in the back cooking and putting to go orders together. I always like to support a locally owned business. It's also about expectations, everyone is under staffed, so I always appreciate the service staff who are working. Having said that the service was fast and efficient . It's also about being realistic about the food. This is not a mall based chain restaurant or a high end bistro somewhere. The food was well prepared hot and delicious. This is a Vietnamese/Chinese restaurant. So there's lots of variety in the menu. I have had the build your own Pho, Korean style Kalbi ribs. They also have Hunan Chinese style dishes, i have tried Mongolian beef, combination fried rice and potstickers. I also have tried the pork fried egg rolls. I usually go for a late lunch early dinner. I talked to the owner and asked her how they made their soup and she said they boiled bones and added their own spices which is the traditional way to do things, I think they have a good soup base, all soup comes with sprouts and fresh Thai basil, I usually add bok choy, brisket and steak. They have plenty of other Vietnamese dishes too. I have enjoyed their pork vermicelli which is a cool salad type dish which is nice on a hot day. Some of my friends really enjoy their chicken wings. So there's still a good option with lots of choices, good staff and reasonable prices.

I ordered the Pho Special (comes with brisket, beef tendon, eye of round, and meatballs). Not the best pho I've had, but I still enjoyed it a lot. Broth had great flavor, however I wish I could have had raw steak as I prefer that in my pho but that wasn't an option- I usually like getting raw steak to put into the hot soup and let it cook a bit through as you put it in. I would eat here again though. The restaurant was clean and service was prompt. Nicely decorated, and prices were fair!

I heard about them through a Facebook Foodie page for Des Moines. I was lucky to get my order in because they sell out super fast! I ordered and paid via their website: https://oishiirameniowa.com. They don't have a lot of options and I would have liked them to share the English equivalent or a description of some of the ingredients but they have photos so that helped. I had read a stellar review of the Oishii Tonkotsu ($11.99) that consists of pork broth, 2 slices of pork, a hard boiled egg, mushrooms, some veggies I don't know the names of and nori. It also had scallions and onions but I requested mine without those and I added a side of black garlic oil, as recommended in the review. My bf likes spice so I got him the spicy miso and added an egg. A dew days before pick-up I got a text asking if I was allergic to onions because they use an onion oil in the broth and would make mine sans that oil if I was allergic since they noticed I had asked for no onions of any kind in my order. I really like that attention to detail and care for their patrons. On the day of pick-up I got a reminder text of my pick-up time a few hours before and then again about 30 minutes before. I pulled up to the front of the Mickle Center and it was dark and looked closed. I texted that I was there and asked if I was in the right spot since it looked so abandoned. They called and led me to their pick-up spot in the parking lot behind the center. Once there, I waited a few minutes and then they came out to my car with my order. It smelled amazing as I drove home, my excitement growing as I drove home. Got home and reheated the broth before pouring it over the veggies and noodles and then drizzled the garlic oil over it. It was so flavorful! The noodles weren't overcooked like a lot of places in Des Moines and some of the veggies still had a little crunch. The pork was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The nori melted beautifully and the egg was the perfect soft boiled consistency. Finally, a real ramen experience in Des Moines! I really wish they had a restaurant because I saw their next pop-up date 2 days after they announced it and they were already sold out so I don't know when I'll get to have more of this deliciousness but if it were up to me, I'd add it to my regular rotation and have it once a week!

Brussel sprouts are an interesting ingredient, and the pork belly is strands and not strips like we expected, but it was still very tasty. I'm also not a huge fan of hard-boiled eggs in my ramen (soft yolk fan club). We also tried the boba milkshakes and they were DELICIOUS. My only issue was the paper straws. There's too much friction to allow the boba to come up through the straw, which results in the straw weirdly collapsing in on itself and rendering itself useless. We settled for just drinking it without the straw. If you like ramen, definitely give them a try.
