We had been meaning to try this place for a while. They are the only sushi place in Ankeny open on a Sunday night so we decided to finally give it a try. Service was excellent, multiple people working together to deliver everything quickly. They have a special just about every day, Sunday is half price cocktails, which were pretty good for a Japanese restaurant. Still think this place is underrated for it's quality of sushi. I've eaten at a lot of the top sushi placed in Des Moines and this place is still my favorite! I go there about every week and they know us by name. The service is great and fast! read more

But I am posting this because my daughter and her friends were celebrating a birthday today in the restaurant and the girls called me to pick them up quickly because there was a creepy server that would walk by the table too close and stare uncomfortably as reported by all the 5 girls. Tea was horrible and the waiter could only describe it was "speciality tea". It taste like pork. Paid $4 for 3 spring rolls that were the size of my pinky. The food was over cooked and swimming in oil. Literally looked like they poured oil all over my food. I love Asian food, but I will never be back to this place. Ever. read more

Ordered four special rolls and shumai to go and they all came exactly as expected. The packaging kept them together but didn't mix them up. Got them home and one was even still warm so it was like eating at the restaurant but in the comfort of my own home. read more

This was our first time eating here. The food was good and we liked the Hibachi chef-but the server? Horrible. My daughter went to the restroom and the server came to our table to get our order. I told her we would order when my daughter returned. The party next to us did not know what they wanted to order either. She returned 4 times in 5 minutes to take our order. She said "so still No IDEA???" The party next to us said they would be happy to move to a booth. I told my husband we could just go spend money some place else but he insisted we stay. Fortunately we only had her stop by once more-after we ordered and we had to wait for another party to be sat so I'm not sure what the heck the rush for our order was-when she refilled drinks and brought the ticket. There was a large group of young girls on the other side of the hibachi and once of them did not hear her say "coke.....coke..."-so the "server" slung it at her getting it all over the grill. The food is good, and the drinks are decent. I have a major problem with the waitresses though. Everything seemed like an issue whenever we talked about a problem with the food or drinks. My friend didn't eat her soup because it was the wrong kind, and our waitress didn't correct it to make the situation right. The table next to us ordered a drink, but didn't like the taste and asked for a new kind of drink; the woman showed attitude to the point that we all just kinda looked at each awkwardly. Had a terrible lunch experience here. I ordered the vegetable hibachi and notified the staff that I would need the vegetables and rice cooked with seperate utinsels and they decided to ignore my instructions and cooked them together. So I complained and they made it seperatly and then right after the waiter decides to notify me that their miso soup is made with steak so I literally proceeded to go and vomit to which when she comes back she's super rude and continues to blame me the customer for everything. Will absolutely NOT be back here because they aren't vegetarian friendly and apparently don't have ears!!! read more

The food was great for a first timer there. I have to say the shrimp was a shinning moment, I'm going back for those for sure!! I tried my wife's steak and it was tender and very flavorful. The scallops were small, but tasted ok. The girl who waited on us left a little to be desired she was no frills all business and never smiled. When she asked us a question and we didn't respond she immediately left. If you hesitated she got right on you to hurry and make a choice. Not a real concern, a little rude, a little off putting, but it wouldn't stop me from going back. The Hibachi Grill Chef was very experienced, but didn't interact with our table much. As I had seen him do with other tables. We have been to many grills like this and it seems that part of the show is the interaction with the chef. He didn't even explain the sauces he placed on the table. One tasted like ranch dressing, which didn't do much for me. As it wasn't even a very busy night it kinda seemed odd. We arrived at 7 and think we were one of the last grills seated. Bottom line food is very good and it is why I would return. read more

The food is bland. The hibachi chefs aren't very good, so you get lots of burned food. Burned and bland don't mix well. Don't even bother with the soup. It's basically warm water in a bowl. Also not okay that employees yell at customers. I don't recommend and will not be back. There are too many other hibachi restaurants that are much better. read more

We've eaten at Tokyo in Ankeny 5 times. The first time after they first opened was great. Hibachi grill entertainment food and service all great. The second time was a birthday party a year ago and again good food and service. The third time we made a grill reservation for 10 but when we arrived they gave our grill to a larger party. They pulled together 3 dining room tables for our group apologized and gave us free sushi. The 4th time with a group of 8 they incorrectly billed us for things we didn't order and couldn't figure out how to fix.. after 3 attempts we just paid for what they thought we had. The 5th time our party of 10 had to ask for drinks 3 times over the course of 10 minutes for everyone to receive drinks. The hibachi cook seemed rushed in his presentation and didn't seem like he was enjoying himself. As soon as the food was served our waitress immediately brought out to-go boxes rushing us to eat as quickly as possible. Five minutes later she was asking us to leave because a group was waiting for our table. We still had food on our plates. This place started out great and our group of 10 has spent well over $2000 with them during our 4 visits. Service is lacking. Our group will go to Ohana or Taki from now on. read more

friday night at 6pm...the place was empty...tells you something... the place was empty, but the service managed to be very slow. i ordered a margarita, rocks, and it was SO SOUR. i took two drinks and was physically unable to continue. the dish my husband got was not what he ordered. he ordered a meal that he could share with our 2 y/o daughter but what came was something she would not eat. they were hospitable and brought us free chicken strips for her to munch on. i got the chicken teriyaki (i don't eat sushi). this was not teriyaki. the chicken was overcooked and dry and drowning in an overly sweet sauce. it came with a very small portion of rice, which i ran out of quite quickly. i wasn't thrilled with the salad because i didn't care for the dressing but i think most would like it if you're into that kind of thing. the mushroom soup was very bland. my husband enjoyed his sushi and his meal. it was also very uncomfortable noticing that three different employees watched us eat for the entire duration of our meal. some older woman stood in the sw corner watching us eat...the sushi chef stood behind the counter, obviously with nothing to do because he also watched us the entire time. then some bald guy came out from the back and sat there and watched us until we left. this was weird. we will not be returning. read more

If I could leave no stars I would. I had the worst meal of my life at this restaurant. Not because of the food but because of one employee. I went to have hibachi with my fiancé and another couple this evening for a date night. This is not the first time we've been to this restaurant, we were hesitant to come back after our last experience but more on that later. There is one hibachi cook (white guy, missing teeth) who made the experience a awful. He makes crude, sick, inappropriate jokes while he's cooking. The first joke he made was in reference to his belt, he said that the family of the owners were paid to 17 cents to make his belt over seas and that he can't pronounce their names correct. While I was eating my food I asked the cook for extra yum yum sauce (the white sauce) and he made a joke to my fiancé that if I kept eating yum yum sauce he wasn't going to be the one to blame for me getting fat and that if I kept it up, only black guys would like me. I got up & went to the bathroom & broke down into tears. No one should EVER say this to someone & especially when I am paying you money to make our meal & provide a fun, pleasant dining experience. The last time we were here, this same cook made inappropriate jokes about having sex with children & picking up girls at the high school. I can't believe this person has a job working with the public and particularly families. I won't step foot in this restaurant ever again. I complained to the manager on duty about what was said during our dinner & the manager said "oh he must be joking. He talks while he cooks the food". We were given a $20 discount off our dinner after I brought this to the managers attention but that is ridiculous. I should have walked out and not paid. I recommend no one spends a dime of their money here and DO NOT bring children here. read more

Very good! Four of us ate at the hibachi grill and we all loved our meals. Our cook was excellent and made the shrimp and scallops perfectly. Very fun hibachi show. I had the chicken and it was delicious. My husband had the filet mignon and it was cooked perfectly. We also shared some sushi which was very good. I recomend the Godzilla Roll. The fried rice was also delicious. Good bear selection and excellent I had an excellent MaiTai. read more
