Classes are too full and are booked on first day. We tried to get our youngest in a class and could not, so then we tried to cancel, but ended up wasting the $50 fee and could not use it. I want to like this YMCA but there always seems to be an issue. Like this. We are in the middle of summer and since June 2025 has started there has been 8 pool closure notices that have been emailed out. If it's for maintenance do your maintenance at the last hour of the day or after hours so guests aren't affected? If it's staffing hire people. People want to work. We come here routinely. Pleasant staff, great programs, fun classes, extremely clean. Kids care is a gift from God. We love it here!

This Y is a beautiful facility and is fortunate to be able to expand with new playgrounds and outdoor sports areas nearby. There aren't many large facilities like this anywhere nearby, so it is frequently at capacity. Classes are usually jammed to the danger point. The worst class--I've watched an enormous crowd of elderly people crammed into the main gym with no thought to close the entrance with so many people showing up. These folks seem amazingly fit, but that's an accident waiting to happen. * In my own case, I've had to wait for weight machines, have been run over by kids on the track, and just felt unsafe many times, whether in Zumba or tai chi. Seemingly nothing is being done to either add classes or close when full. *I looked it up in frustration: the fire marshall says 6 ft between people with a 4 ft edge around the room. The 2 feet between people that's the norm at this Y, with NO safe exit aisle around the room is no where near that. read more

If you have toddlers and you want to help them get comfortable in the water and learn to swim DO NOT waste your money joining the Tom Taylor Y branch. For the 3rd week in a row "the beach" area for young swimmers was closed. Often times it's because there isn't a lifeguard available. Today it was closed for a private event. Once again I left the Y with crying kids who were promised they could swim. The staff provided platitudes, but no solutions. We also learned that some Y groups get priority when there are limited lifeguards because the Y receives additional funding for those groups. We were provided that information directly from a staff member who I'm sure has since been reprimanded for telling us that. So for example, the Y gets additional monies for the senior water aerobics class, so if they are short staffed, the toddler area is closed without notice. We have addressed our concerns with staff, all the way up to the director....nothing has changed....and this has been going on for years. Save your money and avoid the frustration. WHY ONLY THREE STARS- Up to until you read this, I would have issued 5 Stars BUT..... I am lodging a complaint to you about your recent change in policy which prohibits music in the Tom Taylor YMCA Aquatic Center PoolArea because one person complained.  I was appalled and shocked to you would ordered that no music to be played over the Tom Taylor YMCAAquatic Center Pool Area Sound System based on one complaint. I understand from the Aquatic Center Staff that ONE Person complained about the music being"too loud". You appear to be kowtowingto a single disagreeable individual when everyone else I spoke with likes the music in the Tom Taylor YMCA Aquatic Center Pool Area. In effect, this lone complainer has stripped the rest of us from enjoying music when we use the TomTaylor YMCA Aquatic Center Pool Area. That's not fair! That is classic Tyranny by a Tiny Minority (One Person).   So, I am complaining to you on behalf of the rest of us - the many who like music in the Aquatic Center.  I want to hear the music. Reject your previous Order - PUT BACK THE MUSIC! That is one of the aspects of the Tom Taylor YMCA Aquatic Center Pool Area that has made coming to the Tom Taylor YMCA Aquatic Center Pool Area such an enjoyable experience. I want that enjoyment restored! there are many more like me. Just ask.  You may say "what about that complainer?" I say this!  I have attended the YMCA Aquatic Center for well over a year, coming most days of the week and have immensely enjoyed listening to the music while conducting my daily pool workouts. When ton he occasion occurred -rarely - that the music was too loud, I requested the Staff to reduce the volume, and they have ALWAYS instantly responded. They reduced the volume and then checked with me to see if that lower volume was acceptable. They were, in every instance, exceedingly polite and prompt in complying with my request. Why this one complainer can't do the same is beyond reason or comprehension. Perhaps he likes the negative attention his complaints draw to him, I don't know. Good place for late nite with my friends, the only downside was that one of my friends was being threatened to be kicked out by some kid who was around 6 ft and was probably someone between the age of 12 and 16, I don't want to have him around her, especially since a lot of teens act that way. read more

Updated equipment with a variety of classes to chose from. The sidewalks nearby may appeal to people who prefer to do some cardio outside. At times, it can be pretty crowded, which makes it more difficult to use the the weight machines. The classes are also pretty popular, and the workout rooms can get a bit crowded. read more

Love this YMCA! They have so much and now that it is accessible it is a great place to work out or bring the family. I go 5-6 days a week and the staff is always kind and helpful. For the most part it is good- but I would highly recommend teaching all the employees the rules before letting them do "safety checks" yes in fact my child is allowed in the treadmill area and yes he had the training- maybe you guys should just make it a habit to give children bracelets as they walk in? Told me she doesn't think kids are allowed in the treadmill area (he's 10) and she would have to check on it umm why would they train him there and tell him it's okay if it's not? We have been members of the TT/GH Y since the doors opened, a few years now. We have terminated our membership during COVID (as most did) and returned a few months ago. Personally, I really appreciated seeing such a thorough cleaning of the place, daily. This action has ceased-why? Your employee's and management team seem friendly and approachable-bar none. I have reviewed some comments about "looker room behavior " that is simply unacceptable, vaping & making a mess of the place. Where we come from, we are very direct and unafraid of engagement. If you witness this unacceptable locker room behavior, you most confront the guilty party and just remind them that this is OUR Y. We love our Y! They have age appropriate classes for both my hubby and myself. We do water aerobics three mornings a week and I do Rock Steady Boxing two afternoons a week. Wonderful great caring staff, coaches and instructors. read more

Not sure if all YMCA facilities are having similar issues but the Gig Harbor Y management has become much worse in the last 3 years. I know COVID is part of the reason but it does not excuse the lack of oversight that has been occurring recently. Today for example, my wife was in the women's locker room and a woman was vaping while her two 8 year old boys were showering on the women's side. Another woman had her 6 year old boy getting dressed with clothes and towels thrown all over the floor. There needs to be more monitoring inside the locker rooms and an age cut off for boys on the women's side (5 and younger seems appropriate). I also have issues with recent changes to some of the pool policies. Lap swimmers seem to be pushed out of lanes more frequently for classes that should be occurring in the more shallow pool. Classes or time periods for children younger than 6 do not need to occur in the deep lap pool. Other classes such as water aerobics also seem to be bleeding over into the lap pool unnecessary. When these issues and others are brought up to the front desk, there seems to be a lot of shoulder shrugging and not a lot of meaningful response. For a gym that charges as much as they do, operational issues, like the ones I have mentioned, should not be occurring. Also, why are you still not open on Sundays?!! Every other gym I have been in recently are back to being open 7 days a week and 24 hours a day. I joined this Y when they first opened and it feels as if they really don't care about their members any longer. Too bad , because there are so few facilities with a decent pool in this area. We joined the Tom Taylor YMCA when we moved here and it has been AWESOME! Updated equipment, clean facilities, great classes, wonderful staff and members! I appreciate all of the programs this YMCA offers to children especially during and after COVID. No gym is perfect, but I love that this gym tries to serve its members and the community. Very limited hours on weekend- you are in luck if u like to get up at the crack of dawn. they close the gym on sunday afternoons for church services. And closed it altogether on easter sunday to accomodate this church ( not the members) without an announcement. Erratically will change their hours. Definitely geared to families with kids, not families without kids. Disappointed that they are not more responsive to working families without kids. Limited after- hours options for classes for working people.i gave them 2 stars due to their hours. Been a member for a while, and it isnt serving my needs. read more

This place is so frustrating. I pay $70 a month to get kicked out of the little workout rooms located upstairs constantly for youth groups. The worst part is I will start my workout and then 10 min in get told to leave when they don't even have the class on the schedule that is listed outside the room. Also, they only have one area that has barbells and heavy weights so don't try going after 2pm during the week or it is packed and you have to wait for equipment. I miss the OAC in Seattle where I paid 50 bucks a month for such a beautiful facility. Here, you pay $70 for a "community center" that smells like old socks with minimal equipment. read more

Not sure what these negative comments are all about but the staff is very caring and helpful. Yes it can be crowded but you can go online and check what those busy times are and plan accordingly. As far as day care goes...this is a YMCA not a private pre school day care center nursery environment so it is different and a person wanting their child to go here needs to do their research. Diseasing for profits here, everytime I go here I come down with covid, other respitory infections, it never seems to happen at other YMCAs but this one, I have 2 other friends that have told me the same when they go there its like some major or massive sickness not just a 1-2 head cold. I had came down with bronchitis and near pneumonia for about 3 months. Prior to that some months prior our whole family came down with it. Wouldn't it be odd that the focus of getting people sick so they don't come work out and they can collect easy money and oversell on memberships and keep the place open for limited and otherwise shitty hours that don't work for people so they can make big profits at play here? Not sure fully, but I do know my family and at least 3 other families have come down with illness here each time we go, one friend said it took her family 1 year of illness before they could come back and not get ill. There are professional air quality and HEPA filters that can be used much like a medical environment to scrub the air better, just mind boggling that they can't do anything about it as they have told others. Going to cancel lost money here. read more

I was hired as a maintenance technician in January of this year (2024) and it was an amazing experience to be given the opportunity to work for such a great community organization that helps people and opportunity to work with such amazing people, I enjoy working with the the many different departments and helping keep the facility operating by maintaining and working on many different projects to ensure a great experience for the members. In recent months the maintenance department has be operating under a punitive leadership style in which I am being "micromanaged" and put on very strenuous tasks without assistance, leadership, proper support or direction. I have been yelled at for coming to work early (told to clock in and get to work if I'm going to come in early, instead of being able to come in and utilize the facilities many amazing programs or just to engage with other members of the community that I know.) I have tried to address these concerns with the director and human resources, (pretty serious problems at this point because I've never in all my years working gone to HR anywhere else.) I don't have the support I believe I need nor am I offered any assistance with the most recent task of remodeling the basement for a laboratory to test water. (Never in my 18 years as a pool and spa technician have I needed a laboratory.) Great expense has gone into equipment and supplies that are not needed to test pool water. I feel as though I am being treated this way to make me quit and found out that this is why the last couple of technicians did quit or retired. I love the YMCA as an amazing organization that I have grown up with, I respect the work and programs that they offer. I have been given an amazing opportunity to work here and to give back by engaging with members and having a great experience with assisting in keeping this facility looking and running to the best of my ability. Recently however I don't feel appreciated for what I have been doing, our facilities department is losing staff, moral is down and we all need a little love and recognition for the hard work we do. Only criticism is for a handful of members who continue to spread COVID-19 and its ongoing variants by refusing to follow the simple but vital rule of properly wearing a mask. I LOVE this Y and can't say enough good things about it! The instructors are all very fit and do an excellent job of motivating us, whether it's cycling, weight training, high intensity cardio, yoga, dance...need I go on? The front desk staff are very welcoming. The cleaning staff keep the entire place meticulously clean. The equipment is top notch and there's plenty of it. During the lockdown they did outdoor classes under a tent, always with our safety in mind. When I need to work out in my own I can always find a place to call my own. This YMCA is fairly new and definitely the nicest looking YMCA I've used. The building and facility itself is huge, but there are major shortcomings when it comes to the layout and use of space. Given the size of the building, the weight lifting area should be at least double what it is currently. The swimming pool area is fairly large and used mostly by kids. There's a good amount of cardio equipment but only four Stairmasters! The soap in the men's restroom needs to be refilled daily. Nine out of 10 times, the soap dispenser is empty. It's so simple, just have someone refill it! For almost $60 a month, I expect a lot more from a gym. The membership folks aren't very customer focused and not the friendliest bunch. Gig Harbor needs some competition by one of the larger fitness companies such as LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, or even a Gold's Gym! Also, the Y closes at 5PM on Sundays! Seriously? read more

Friendly staff, clean and well organized Facility, energetic and fun classes for both children and adults, and very welcoming community! As a family with four children I have been able to find fun programs to fit all their Desires and needs. I as well have found classes that I can attend daily to get a great workout and enjoy being around fun and friendly people. I can not say enough nice things about the amazing staff, volunteers and community. I must add that the child watch staff has been nothing less than AMAZING with all four of my little ones. Overcrowded/ Dropped my membership due to many yoga and aerobic classes being full to overflowing. Also-Disappointing that Y decided to double the guest fee to $20 -a lot of adults like to play an hour or 2 of BBall but pretty expensive now. Y is one of the largest nonprofits w substantial public donations. Not ok that rates keep going up. Perhaps rate increases and high guest pass fees are a means to control excess numbers of members-clearly they don't want guests using the facilities read more

I write this review from the perspective of someone that only has uses for and interest in the weights, machines, and cardio equipment. If I were inclined to go to the classes, use the courts, or swimming pool my review may be one star higher. The equipment at this facility is top notch, no question about it. They have some of the latest Precore, Life Fitness, and cardio machines that you can think about. They also do a pretty good job of keeping it clean and organized, from what I can tell. Unfortunately, what they do NOT have is sufficient space or sufficient numbers of weight machines to support the number of members here. This is a theme at several other YMCA's that I have been to. Though the exercise areas are some of the most utilized, the layout or needs of the members is barely given any consideration. As a result, everything is haphazardly shoved into spaces that are way too small. Good luck getting on the leg press, deadlifting platform, smith machine, or numerous other pieces of equipment in prime hours without having to wait or compete for time. There is only one of each of most everything. Yes, you read that right. What gym only has one leg press and one version of each machine these days? This isn't to say I don't enjoy working out here or what they have to offer- it's just there is not really any alternative in north Gig Harbor. What I think this place needs is just some good old fashioned competition. If a 24-Hour Fitness Active, or even a good size Anytime or Snap Fitness were to open on the north end of Gig Harbor I think it would do a lot to thin the herd and make it more bearable. We are not getting anywhere near $60 a month in value by using the weight and cardio areas alone. read more
