What an awesome awesome spot. I guess you tend to love what you're familiar with and this place is similar to places I enjoy in Australia, Singapore and Indonesia. After spending nearly $20 on food and coffee, I was told I couldn't sit at one of six empty tables at the front because I had my laptop, even though all of the 'laptop tables' were full... the guy didn't seem to care that I had nowhere to sit. I then asked for a glass for water once I received my food as there were none left and the staff member look extremely inconvenienced to grab one for me. Oh man. The -smoothest- cup of coffee I've had in a very long time. This cafe might be little more than one room with a small kitchen, but hot damn, I loved stopping in here after a long stroll of the neighborhood for a good cup of pick-me-up hot coffee. The interior is nice and shady, which helped the patrons working on their laptops immensely. The baked goods are an excellent match to the strong coffee. A hip hole-in-the-wall cafe in Malasana. Food: I ordered an orange cappuccino and a slice of carrot cake. The carrot cake was kind of dry. I wouldn't order it again. The cappuccino on the other hand was good. They make the it with orange infused milk. The orange gave the cappuccino an interesting kick. My roommate ordered the chai latte and she said it was bomb. Space: We came to this cafe around 6 to study but it was crowded. Not that much seating but we manage to find some in the back. Come earlier to snag a table in the front by the windows. As hipster as a Spanish coffee spot can get. These people know how to brew a good cup and pour out some great cappuccinos/ drip coffee. They also have a delectable selection of baked goods and fresh sammies and salads. The inside is eclectic & cleanly decorated and small for the amount of customers that visit regularly. Probably the best especially cafe in Madrid. I went there tWice during my last visit and i everything was perfect. Its very hipster + casual atmosphere and i really liked how their counter and coffee machine is in the middle/centre of the cafe where you can see them preparing your coffee/drink. Anyway, the coffee is just wooowww and they use oatly milk which lade le so happy because its hard to find cafes who use it. The food was delicious i ordered avocado toast and it came with lime, pomegranate, see salt and my friend had the same thing but with cream cheese and yogurt bowl and iced latte on the side. Having had some pretty shit coffee around the world, and being a huge coffee snob, I can confidently say that this is the best coffee in Madrid, or at least good enough to stop searching and just go here. Toma Cafe is so hip and cool!! They started playing Pony by Ginuwine, and the whole cafe was jamming! They got good feedback and started playing old jams from Usher and Omarion too. I saw more foreigners than natives here, most seemed like students. Plenty of people were having conversations in English, so don't come here if you want to be surrounded by Spaniards. The chairs aren't the most comfortable for lounging and reading, so I don't think I can spend more than an hour here. There's free wifi, so great for catching up on some social media. It was a quick iced coffee stop for me, which was SO refreshing; it's hard to find iced coffee in Europe. I liked it enough to come back the next day. Definitely recommend! :) read more

I opted for the flat white, and my friend the cafe con leche. At less than 2 EUR each, both of us got our second wind to continue exploring the city of Madrid on our first night in town. Toma is a small, charming coffee place. The guys who work here are really nice, speak good english and are service minded. The coffee is great and reasonably priced. The sandwiches are good and they also do fresh orange juice so you can have an okay breakfast here as well. All in all great place to get your caffein fix in Madrid. read more

One of the many great things about Spain is coffee culture. Every single place, from the smallest convenience store to fine-dining establishments, has an espresso machine. They take pride in their cafe con leche. Therefore, to say a hipster coffee shop in Madrid deserved 5 stars, is saying a lot. This was the first place I went to after I landed in Madrid. I dropped my bags off at the hotel, and needed a cup of coffee. I also wanted to explore the Malasana neighborhood, so headed in that direction. I found Toma tucked away off the main road on a side street. The café has some tables and chairs sprawled out in a small area in the front of the shop. The menu of coffee options is small. I got the Toque de leche naranja (iced latte flavored with orange peel) and a slice of carrot cake. My girlfriend got the affogatto (ice cream and espresso). The drinks were amazing, especially the latte. The orange peel was so simple but refreshing with the latte. On the side of the café is an open window kitchen where you can see them making all the baked goods. They are tremendous. All the pastries are made fresh that day and are the perfect mid day snack while walking through the Malasana neighborhood. On our last day in Madrid, we had to come back to Toma one last time before leaving. I hope to travel back to that amazing city and that special café. read more

I rarely drink the coffee while I'm here, but when I do it's consistently good. Mostly I grab a bag of freshly (within 5 days) roasted coffee. After pretty rough coffee experiences in Sevilla, I was VERY happy to try Toma. The barista was very nice, knowledgeable about coffee, and spoke English well (a bonus for me...turns out two years of Spanish ten years ago didn't prepare me as well as I thought it did). I had two double shots: one single origin Columbian, and another blend (I think it was 60% Ethiopian, 20% Columbian, and 20% Guatemalan, but I'm not sure). Both were very good, especially the single origin. I've had mixed experiences with single origin espresso shots since they are a bit rough if not executed perfectly (like single malt vs blended whiskey), but the barista at Toma nailed it. I came here after seeing all of the great reviews on Yelp as well as on Vice. Perhaps I came in with too many expectations. The interior was extremely cozy but pleasant. The problem was the product. I ordered an Americano and found it to be rather weak. The taste was bland and the coffee lacked the kick I was hoping for. Perhaps next time I'll stick to a more classic Spanish coffee, a cafe con leche. As a plus the service was great and the baristas were very helpful. I like their toasts with tomatoes, eggs, avocado. Coffee is great there, however the coffee I bought to prepare at home wasn't my favorite. It had a fruity after taste, but that's not their fault. They have coffee cards to stamp and I forgot mine once and they gave me another new one and stamped it evens though they don't do it for coffee pack purchases. Nice staff. Almost everyone speaks English, including some of the staff.
