I came here and it was like going to my small home-town dentist office where they knew my name, my parents, and remembered a lot of details about my life at every visit. It is located near the beachfront right off the interstate and near the Virginia Beach Convention Center. It has ample parking in the attached lot though it is a smaller parking lot with about 8 or so spaces - it never seems to be so over crowded that I can't find any parking... it has been close once or twice though... The inside is very very clean with new equipment and cute beach-y furniture and wall decor - surf boards and seashells and such. They sell Sonicare toothbrushes and products and do oral surgeries and tooth whitening here. I have never needed more than a very minor filling that did not require numbing and the doctor (Dr. Heffelfinger mentioned below) has an excellent bedside manner who decided to not numb me and we went very slowly to see if I even needed it for such a superficial filling. It turned out I didn't so he spared me the stress and pain of that for which I greatly appreciated it. Means I didn't drool on myself all night needlessly. Plus he personally called the next day to check on me - something I believe they do with all patients who had a procedure done and which is a real personal touch that you don't find most places anymore. I've had a few hygienists since coming here over the last two years but my favorite was only there temporarily and left - my current - Kimberly - is very nice and works with me because I am a bleeder with sensitive gums and A LOT of plaque build-up every time no matter how much I floss or how expensive my toothbrush is.... she seems to go out of her way not to hurt me and to try to minimize the dreadful experience. Which is nice. She also asks about my life and makes an effort to remember the details. My dentist - Dr. Heffelfinger is a very nice younger doctor with a friendly and funny personality - who happens to have gone to JMU - my alma mater - which makes us instant best friends and means he is automatically a great American to me.... plus he's pretty damn cute so it could be much worse. I still don't really enjoy coming to the dentist - but it's much better than ANY previous experiences I've had and especially in the Virginia Beach area. if you are looking for the small-town dentist feel where they remember your name and some family details every time you go in and don't farm you in and out like cattle, come here. You won't regret it.

However, the experience surrounding my consultation and scheduled procedure was incredibly distressing due to a severe lack of accommodation, continuity of care, and professional sensitivity. I repeatedly disclosed my severe dental phobia and PTSD stemming from childhood trauma during my initial consultation and follow-up communications. I called to verify my agreed-upon accommodations would be met for the planned multiple tooth extractions and scaling. I was subsequently told that no accommodations would be provided for managing pain, PTSD, or trauma during the procedure. Following the initial appointment, I was prescribed an antibiotic. However, my follow-up appointment was scheduled two months later, allowing the infection to return. I had to get antibiotics again, and the dentist prescribed me the exact same antibiotic back-to-back. This lack of scheduling priority and prescribing the same medication for a recurring infection shows poor follow-up care. ​Insensitive and Unprofessional Treatment: Throughout my interactions, I felt like I was being "talked at" by the dental professionals and was treated as if I was the issue in the room. To make matters worse, the assistant on the phone questioned if I was "asking for drugs." This assertion was unprofessional and upsetting, especially considering the severity of my documented phobia, which necessitates accommodations to prevent a violent reaction to pain. ​The lack of empathy, poor continuity of care (evident in the repeated antibiotic prescription and delayed scheduling), and subsequent dismissal of my medically compromised mental state has made it impossible for me to proceed with care here. If a practice offers services to those with severe dental needs, they must be prepared to handle patients with disclosed trauma and phobia with dignity and appropriate planning, not accusation and dismissal. Thanks for wasting my time and money I spent to get my triage form filled out as an uninsured new patient just to be able to be referred to you followed by the dismissal of why people had to hold me down as a child to be treated. If a practice offers services to trauma survivors, they must commit to handling them with dignity, respect, and appropriate planning--not accusation and dismissal. ​Dr. Dunham's office has a duty to respect any patient's right to self-determination and confidentiality, including the right to informed consent, duty to protect themselves from harm, a duty to promote welfare, acting for ones overall wellness including competent and timely delivery of services, a duty to treat people fairly, which relates to not discriminating and ensuring the just allocation of dental resources, and a duty to be honest and trustworthy in all dealings with patients and the public. This experience was none of these as the assistant on the phone seemed very happy to remove me from their schedule as if I was some sort of problem case because of ptsd I suffer from.

I'm grateful to have a professional who isn't just trying to get me in and out fast. He actually listens when I tell him my issues. Simply put, I need more Novocain than most people, due to my body's ability to burn through it so fast (I'm also super sensitive to dental pain) No matter your dental needs- from cleanings to fillings, Dr. Dunham is the doctor you want to see!
