Organ inside St. Patrick's Old Basilica

If you're thinking about it! Do it! We toured the St. Patrick's Old Basilica with Tommy and it was one of the coolest things I've ever done in NYC. I recent wrote a food review for my recent trip and one of my restaurant recommendations actual came from Tommy himself. He knows what he's talking about, and his tours are fun, education, enlightening and a darn good time! Such a great experience and so informative! I would absolutely recommend this tour group and our guide for a great tour!

Having been in NYC often, each time I visit, I look for something different to do. When I read about the catacombs tour and told my friend whom I visit, she was interested in going as was another friend. We went down to the address and found the kiosk across from the church where you buy tickets. The tour starts from a building owned by the church that is now used for events. Tommy gave us some general history of New York City and the groups who settled there as well as information about the cathedral-now designated as a basilica. He was very knowledgeable and the information was very interesting. We walked across to the church outside cemetery and were told about some of the people buried there. We went into the basilica which is quite beautiful. Tommy gave us more information and then took us to the area housing the organ. We were able to walk behind it and see its interworking parts which was interesting. We headed down to the catacombs-an underground cemetery (don't expect the skulls and bones of Paris). There were hallways with vaults on the inner side and also an area with niches for cremains (remains of persons that were cremated). Each of the vaults can hold quite a few ancestors-roughly 8-12. We were allowed to enter one of the vaults that would house 12 people. It was a good size with electric lights. There were still empty slots for more family members. Tommy was given special permission and exclusivity to do this tour taking people inside of normally locked areas. The tour fee is split with the church. He was genial, knowledgeable and patient. The three of us really enjoyed the tour. A nice bonus was discount cards for two restaurants in the area.

Me and my girlfriend Did the candlelight tour at the basilica of st Patrick's cathedral and our tour guide Dan was outstanding, personable and very informative. Really highlighted the experience. I would recommend this tour if you wanna kill a little time in the afternoon. It isn't a full day dedication and it's a cool walk down history.

Great little tour that gives you a bit of a history lesson of life in NYC back in the day. Dan our guide was very knowledgeable and lively. Definitely worth doing. Plus like the Haunted House ride in Disney, they are still taking in permanent guests.

I loved this walking tour !! I learned so much from our guide Dan. He was funny, informative, and kept us on track. So much NYC history in that little church and catacombs. I look forward to coming back and bringing some friends and out of town visitors to join. Thanks again Dan !!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Catacombs by candlelight tour with Tommy, a true New Yorker with a head full of historical knowledge. First part of the tour is above ground and latter part is below. Hearing the stories and learning the history was very interesting to us even though neither of us are catholic. To use the New York Pass, it says to call Tommy to schedule and he will direct you to takeawalk.com to reserve your spot. To bypass the phone call and just go straight to the website to reserve. The tour was a unique experience not to miss! Tip: this is at the OLD st Patrick's, be sure to read the email and match up the picture to know to correct spot to go in.

Fun and Interesting tour! First off shout out to Mike, great tour guide! This was a great tour that melded history and architecture together! We had the opportunity to tour the catacombs, main sanctuary, and outside cemetery. The catacombs were very cool, an interesting mix of history and society structure mixed in with seeing how a catacomb lays out in the middle of NYC. The tour also gave incite on how religion developed on the Island. The main sanctuary was pretty, we got to see the organ close up, both front and back which was very interesting. The cemetery was a trip, it was dark when we made it out there so it added a fun mix to the tour. From an architectural standpoint it was great to see the building close up and hear its history. Also a great opportunity to get some nice shots if your into photography.

We are history & church tour nerds, so this tour by Tommy's of NYC was attractive-- but when we learned about the only catacombs that were below this 1st Catholic Church in the city, recently opened for tours... we were hooked. Tommy was gracious to let us catch up with the 11:00 AM group when traffic kept us from arrival till 11:10. Kyle was an awesome, enthusiastic guide and managed our large group well. It was time well spent and just about a 15 minute walk down Houston to Katz's Deli where we enjoyed lunch after our tour.

This was a fun, entertaining, and educational tour of the cathedral and catacombs. Our tour guide was the absolute highlight, bringing to life a rich and vibrant history, which in another person's hands may have come off as boring or inane. We're guessing that he has a background in or is currently an actor; he won us over. He led us through a multimedia tour explaining the history of the local area, Irish and Italian immigrants, and the Roman Catholic church. This tour should appeal to anyone, regardless of their faith or religious background, or lack thereof. It was very balanced and completely non-judgmental. We were free to take as many photos as possible. I highly recommend bringing a 35-mm camera or a newer smartphone capable of shooting quality photos in the dark. I saw many people struggling to take photos, which will likely disappoint them. Flash never flatters, and serves only to annoy your fellow tour guests. The cathedral is beautiful, as is the "backside" of the gorgeous pipe organ. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

My wife and I took the catacombs tour with Tommy and enjoyed thoroughly! Tommy , himself, is an incredibly down to earth, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable guide. This tour is unique and he is the only one who gives it in NYC. Even if you live here in the city, like us, this is one of those super cool NYC historical tours that flies way under the radar (for the time being ). The tour begins indoors, in the basilica's event space and starts with an introduction by Tommy that includes some of the history of the neighborhood, information of the Basilica and then the agenda to follow. A walk through the private cemetery is next with Tommy stopping periodically to discuss points of interest and historical significance. Then onto the front steps of the Basilica for sone more interesting historical facts with some humor mixed in. Once inside you get to see how beautiful Basicilica actually is. If you go on the earlier tours before it is open to the public (2pm), you essentially have the run of the place without having to worrying about offending anyone. You visit the balcony followed with a walk THROUGH the pipe organ before descending to the catacombs. Soak it in down here. Just an amazing amount of NYC history. It is renovated so don't expect an Indian Joneslike atmosphere or even Angels & Demons one. It is clean and well paved. The tour wasn't strenous at all. Highlights included recently buried local clergy and old New York families. The shocker and treat was to actually enter one of these private family tombs. Just once in a lifetime stuff. And if you have an extra $7 mil laying around, you too could own your own family crypt. Great tour if you have reasonable expectaions and enjoy NYC history. Keep up the great job , Tommy!

If you are near nolita absolutely book this tour!! Kyle, our guide was excellent and a huge source of knowledge about everything we saw and experienced in the tour. Had a short introduction across the street where you check in, went directly to the church. Before we even entered Kyle had interesting facts which held my attention the whole tour. I can not recommend this enough. Thanks Tommy's and Kyle!!!

My grandmother was just a baby with few recollections. In 1988 two visionaries founded the Tenement Museum. Their intent was to spread tolerance and understanding of the immigrant experience. The museum purchased two tenement buildings on Orchard Street and rehabbed several apartments to simulate the way they were when occupied. Between 1863 and 1935 it's estimated thousands of people from 20 nations called these tenement buildings 'home.' I found the tour fascinating with our guide talking about two families -- one Italian, the other Jewish -- and the hardships they endured living in over-crowded quarters. There are several tours you can choose from focusing on different immigrant experiences, each $30, each ranging from 60 to 75 minutes. (The only way you can see the museum is by booking a tour.) Make reservations on line and check-in at the visitors' center upon arrival. Learn more about the museum by watching the 26 minute film that's run on a loop in the back room. When I found out this place is only catacombs in NYC, I decided to book a tour. I learn so much of history of St. Patrick church that this church is the original before they built St. Patrick 's Cathedral on 5th Ave. I was amazing knowing the history of catholic in New York and mystery behind. The underground was great, some people might say it was short time but maybe because I took a tour at the last round so I feel I spend amount of time down there with no rush. Even it only one level underground but the tomb is deeper than that but with the security and lots of reason they completely seal the tomb so no air in and out of the tomb and no one tough inside for centuries.

Sent a message to see what was recommended as far as the availability of a wait list or moving tickets from walking to bus tour would be easy. Scott himself responded, almost immediately with his recommendations. Purchased the walking tour tickets, put ourselves on the wait list for the bus tour and watched emails like a hawk for the few days before our scheduled date. The pizza tour Gods smiled on us and the wait list opened up. I called to get our tickets moved and talked to Scott who handled the whole transfer quickly for me because once the wait list opens up it opens up for everyone on it. He was very helpful in scoring those seats for us and understood the urgency. LOL. That's ALL before we even got to our first meeting place. We met the tour and Scott at Keste in the Financial District. I had read in my research that the tour stops aren't planned ahead and I was skeptical, but you could see him figuring it out as he figured out his group for the day. One of the attendees had taken the tour a year prior, they played a game of guess the spot so he didn't repeat stops for her and the very large group of family that she brought with her on this tour. There was one request for a spot in Brooklyn but he couldn't make it happen due to their hours, not that he wouldn't have moved heaven and earth if he could have. We had a smaller than usual tour group because of timing and a LI RR strike and you could just see that this opened up other options for places to go. After Keste we were able to do two stops in the Bronx, one in East Harlem. There was even an ice cream, water ice store next door to the last pizzeria. So much thought went into this route. Scott was able to take this group to places he hadn't been to in quite some time due to the distance and size of the group. Back to Keste-- what tour guide takes his entire group and takes over the kitchen, helping himself to dough balls and creating pies as he discussed pizza history?? We saw the kitchen and oven in each establishment and each shop was welcoming and friendly. Scott is a wealth of knowledge and enjoyed sharing his story and the story of all of the stops we visited. Pizza is an absolute passion project for him. Highly recommend!

Five stars for Scott's Pizza Tours, and that's only because six is not an option Yelp provides…read more Imagine a man who has taken the idea of pizza, which most people treat as a thing you fold in half on a street corner, and decided it deserves a Rosetta Stone. That man is Scott. We met him at Keste in the Financial District, and before he said much of anything, I noticed something unusual. Several of the people on our tour had done it before. They were back for more. That seemed as telling as anything else. People do not go on vacation and repeat the same bus ride unless something extraordinary is waiting for them on the other end. Scott does not work from a script. He looks at the group, he looks at the day, and then he consults the secret weather system in his head. Out came our route. Four stops, starting at our meeting point in Manhattan's Financial District and three more scattered like wayward toppings on the city map. Queens. The Bronx. Harlem. Lucky us. Scott told us that combination hardly ever happens. To him it was chance. To the rest of us it was magic. The stops themselves were like chapters in a book. At Keste we learned about the precision of Neapolitan tradition. At Patsy's in Harlem we felt the weight of history, coal ovens burning with the same stubbornness they have for generations. At Mario's on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, an owner with stories longer than the line outside the door talked to us like we were old friends. At Philomena's in Queens, Scott was so at home that he even took a customer's order when the restaurant was swamped by our presence. Every stop had its secrets revealed. Oven temperatures. Dough hydration percentages. Family feuds. Bake times. Flour suppliers. How long a pizza can sit before the soul leaks out of it. Scott called over owners, opened kitchen doors, and invited us to peer inside the fiery mouths of the ovens like pilgrims gazing at sacred relics. Scott himself is difficult to explain without sounding untrustworthy. He is a human encyclopedia with a perfectly tuned sense of joy. He has a Rolodex in his brain that seems to contain the phone number of every pizza maker on earth. I mentioned Hamilton and he talks about Papa's and DeLorenzo's as if we were neighbors. Others mentioned Seattle and Las Vegas, and he told them where to eat, who to meet, and when to go. He casually suggested lowering the water percentage from 66 to 63 for another guest's home pizza dough, as if adjusting the tides. Then he mentioned that after our tour he would be home making 16 doughs for his guides, who were planning to test a new oven. I believed him. He also radiates decency. He runs Slice Out Hunger, a nonprofit that takes the love of pizza and turns it into meals for people who need them most. It is good to know a person can devote their life to melted cheese and still be entirely serious about kindness. This tour filled us with more than pizza. It gave us a sense of belonging. Everyone, from my ten year old to a pizza shop owner who happened to be along for the ride, was entertained and educated and full. Scott's Pizza Tours is not just about pizza, although the pizza is wonderful. It is about a man who has built a community, and who invites strangers to step inside it for a few hours. If you are a casual eater, a home chef, or someone who has already built your own pizzeria, this is for you. Five stars. The highest recommendation.
