I had just bought a used hybrid in Sacramento and was heading home to Reno when the dreaded red triangle of death showed up on the dash. I did a quick repair-shop search and called them. They couldn't have been nicer: saw me immediately (in the late afternoon) and set up an appointment for the next morning. The car was repaired in the time frame they gave me and was charged $200 less than their initial estimate. I am skeptical about mechanics. As a middle aged woman who now drives a Prius, I am not the customer most assume know anything about cars. I moved to the area and took my car into Tom's to have the front brakes replaced as part of standard maintenance. The staff were courteous and respectful. They did a great job on the brakes and the price was really competitive. On the way home the undercarriage plastic part popped off the car (most likely a combination of wear and being up on the lift). The car was not drive-able. I called the shop. They sent out a mechanic who provided a temporary fix for free and then went back to the shop and ordered a new part! This saved me a tow and a fight I thought I would be in for. We have been using Tom's Car Care for years. They are not only friendly but know what they are doing and they do it in a timely manner. Comparing what we pay at a dealership, they are very reasonable. They stand behind their work, tell you what they did and give you the "bad" part if you want. I made an appointment a week out and dropped my Subaru Forester off at 8 am. The mechanics seemed very knowledgable about the issues I discussed I was facing with my car and were very friendly. My husband and I worked with Kevin specifically, although we did see the owner Tom and his wife and child, very sweet that it's a local family-owned business. :) They called us back with a diagnosis, I needed new front brakes and a back rear drum, they replaced it the same day and the car was available for pickup that evening! I am so glad I found these guys again. I was a shade tree (did my own mechanical work) for years and got tired of being sore and having busted knuckles. It's not easy finding a good mechanic I really like. They do good work, they're friendly and I've never heard them BS a customer. I'm lucky to have a great mechanic right down the street. I've even brought something back once that didn't get properly done and instead of tell me to take a hike or blame it on me they said sorry and fixed it. I had Tom and crew install a trailer wiring harness on our first 2017 Toyota sienna. I had installed the hitch myself, and it was a real chore. That sienna was rear ended and eventually totaled. I was able to salvage the trailer wiring from that car, and have Tom install it on our next used sienna. This time they also installed the hitch itself. Both times I have been really happy with the work, and the price Has never exceeded the estimate. I think these guys are real straight shooters, and I would recommend them. Thanks Tom! read more

WOW! My day started out as a non-starter, literally, my car with a brand new battery just would not start. It was an "I need a tow truck and possibly a therapist" kind of morning after I was stranded at my kid's school with a huge $$ bill looming over my head. I called my car's primary care physician, and they couldn't take a look at it until minimum three days, possibly 8 days. Whaaaa?!?! So I called around, and all the places I knew offhand said I could leave it with them and they could hopefully take a look at it before the end of the week. Then, off the recommendation of a friend, we called Tom's. He sounded optimistic over the phone, like it may be something simple. He told us to drop it off and he'd get to it within the next two days. Okay... well, that was the best offer we got so we drove out there and left the car. We got a call only a few hours later that he'd already taken a look, and as he'd suspected it was nothing more than some loose contacts that he'd tightened up with no problems. I was able to pick up my car five minutes after that call. I cannot believe how respectful and efficient he was, and that with no prior relationship he cared enough to make it happen same day because he could. I will 100% be bringing my car back for future work, and I will be paying this recommendation forward whenever I can. Thanks Tom! Toms car care has been going down hill for several years. Now i get shotty work. 3 times i had to bring car back because check engine light keeps coming on. The problem ended up being a simple 02 sensor fixed by another shop. This is one of several vehicle miss diagnosed or not fixed profetionally. Inconsistent answers from management and mechanics. Multiple excuses why something is not covered under warranty. The place is a run down grease pit and management acts unprofessional. All smiles until you have a question about the service. Then they turn into a used car salesman backed into a corner. I do not recomend them for anything other then to change a battery or puting air in my tires. I am having an issue with my GMC truck and took it to Toms because of the rating he has on Yelp. He kept it overnight and the next day told me he knew what the issue was, he just didn't know why it was doing it. He researched it for a couple hours and decided that it would be better to take to a dealership. (It has to do with the oil pressure dropping, probably because an oil change place put the wrong oil in it) He was completely honest and said he did not want to try to fix it because he would have to charge me and the problem might not be fixed. He did not charge me a cent for looking at it and he even changed out the oil. I was blown away by his customer service and honesty. BTW, I did take it to the local dealership in Colfax. They charged me $325 and after driving it for a week the issue is still there. read more

Best mechanic shop in the area. Every time I interact with anyone in the shop, they are super helpful and friendly. The always give it to you straight and don't ever try to con you in to extra work that is unnecessary. I completely trust the staff at Tom's. Not to mention their prices and labor are more than fair. We originally found this shop while price shopping for my BFs truck's timing belt. Their price was far lower than all the local competitors. They even have some good coupons online. It looks like they always have vehicles on the lifts but when the clutch gave out on my '93 Ranger, I called up Tom's and had it back within a few days. There was also a part that needed to get repaired off sight as well. To me, that says they have good connections with other companies to do a good job and in a timely manner. Second review after bringing my truck to Toms. Brakes were squeaking with metal on metal sound. They checked it out and quoted me a reasonable price for new pads (Heavy Duty for full size Chevy) and rotors turned. Left the shop and noticed there was still the metal on metal sound. Brought it back to the shop. Tom said they'd take care of it and drove me home because my wife couldn't come pick me up. It turned out to be a few days of investigation until they could figure out the problem (Defect on factory caliper bracket) and fixed it as part of original quote! I am in town visiting a family member. Her car started making noise loud enough to wake the folks in Reno. Looked for the closest shop and found Tom's. Reviews seemed good, so I headed over to have them look the car over. They were pleasant guys, looked at it straightaway, found the catalytic converter shot, and gave me the news. They went to order the parts, the dealership wanted to delay delivery a day, but Derrick got them to deliver the same day. By 3pm, I was out the door, all fixed up! They showed me the broken parts, got me out the door efficiently and were very nice, not only to me, but the myriad of customers who came through the door, from an elderly woman, to a young guy, to an old pal. The phone was ringing off the hook most of the morning, but the guys were pleasant on the phone AND got vehicles out the door quickly without having to have people bring them back in for corrections. The bill came in within $5 of what they estimated, which, although the bill was a big hit to the wallet, it was nice not to have any further surprises! I drove off, aiming for my relative's home and was told at a stoplight by a fellow motorist that I had a brake light out. I was not far, so I turned back to Tom's, since I really had no idea where to find a parts store. Derrick changed the bulb in minutes without additional charge and had me on my way again quickly. All in all, a great experience! I stopped in at 2 other places in town and was given significantly higher quotes, and longer times for repair. If I, or my relatives need more service on a vehicle, I will definitely head back to Tom's! Tom's Car Care ROCKS! A couple of years ago I brought my Honda Ridgeline in for some AC work after another shop in town had told me that it would be an expensive trouble shooting project and I would probably have to replace the compressor and some other parts. It only took Cole about 10 minutes to pinpoint the problem. He ordered the part and when I brought it back in he had it done in 2 hours and it cost a fraction of what the other estimate was. I've had it back to them multiple times for different things and they're fast, honest and super efficient. The only minor drawback is there is very poor phone reception up at the junction out of town where they are, and the only wifi is in their office area so if you're waiting for a repair it's difficult to call or connect from there. Inexplicably, the restaurant next door doesn't have wifi at all. read more

I was thinking about how to describe Toms Car Care Center and the image came to mind of the old-fashioned family-owned auto repair shop. Old-fashioned because they are honest, customer-oriented, and always seem to do what is best for the customer. They repaired our A/C on our Yukon at a much more reasonable rate than other shops and the work was done right. When we lost some coolant a year later, they did a through diagnostic and did a recharge without any further problem. When my son's Subaru had some major issues, another garage told us that we needed a new motor. When Tom's checked it they found a lesser issue that caused everything. They fixed it and all was fine. I recently needed a short hose replaced on the air injection for the Yukon to pass smog. I pulled in, they saw what was needed, and replaced the needed hose within ten minutes. They did not charge me but should have. It's rare to find shops like Toms anymore. I would not hesitate to bring your car there. read more

This shop is excellent in all aspects. I have been taking my cars there for five years and they have consistently provided top quality service. I have never had to bring a car back for re-repair. They seem to have the expertise to diagnose and fix it right the first time. And their turn-around time has been very reasonable. But the most important reason I keep going back is that they are honest. I am fairly knowledgeable about cars and can tell if I'm getting the run-around.
