I has a poor experience here....disturbing....brought my car to have them check it out. Person who made the apt. seem to impersonate 'Anton' and said he would check out the car himself...so I was impressed esp. because of the impressive rating (although it is easy to make fakes ones of course). Upon arrival...there was no entry point as the whole facility was jammed with vehicles. So, I made a left turn into a one way street and parking my car in the only space left...all the vehicles were parked in a mist-mash of ways. I asked to speak to Anton since I believed that is who I had talked to. The guy responded that he was not there but would arrive. Then he told me that he was the one who talked to me. I had wanted my car checked out esp. the front end and originally , he said d$100. I left and after 30 minutes he called and told me me it was done. Gave me info and said I needed for new tires which I really already knew. He did not mention anything else like the brakes,etc. Or even that he did a test run.. The garage was packed full, so I have no clue when my vehicle was looked at. Upon my return and talk, he then said the charge was $180!!! I was pleased that Anton himself did a very careful and thorough inspection while Nick helped me look up some comparable vehicles for a good idea of what to offer the seller. I was told by another mechanic that my 2014 Subaru needed a new transmission and they gave me a quote. I took it to Anton and he told me he could get a used transmission (with a guarantee) for less than 2/3 of the price quoted by the first mechanic, who hadn't even mentioned the option of a used one. Given how much the original quote was, I had been considering replacing the car, but Anton told me my car had years still left in it. Needless to say, I went with Anton. My car had 120,000 miles on it and he found me a transmission with 80, 000 miles. The car is now running great and I have no plans to take it anywhere else for service. Traveling to Truckee this past week, I had an issue with my vehicle, prior to arriving in Grass Valley. A call to a local dealer suggested I try to make it to Anton Elder's Import Auto Service, before he closed. I barely made it and even though Anton was closing, he not only helped me with a quick diagnosis with my Honda Pilot, but he scheduled me for his next "very busy" day and even drove me to a local Hertz rental car dealer so I could rent a car and continue to an important appointment in Truckee. Antone not only correctly diagnosed my vehicle's problem, but he ordered the parts necessary and fixed my vehicle in a manner that put me back in Redding 2 days later for another appointment. My vehicle has been operating perfectly since. I cannot say enough about Antone and his quiet but accurate assessment abilities, professionalism, honesty and communication skills. I dropped this to only three stars simply because Anton's attitude has vastly changed since becoming sole owner. That and the fact that my 83 year old friend recently took her car in for a smog test. It failed at his shop and to fix it to pass smog, he told her she needed a catalytic converter. She did not! She immediately took her vehicle to her own mechanic who, I believe, was Dave's and it passed with no problem. What's up with that, Anton? Are you now into drumming up business by duping an elderly women? Or did you think word wouldn't get around? Shame on you! You told her she possibly needed (what would amount to well over $2000s worth of work) so her car would pass smog? Hmm... Thank God this 83 yr old woman could smell bullshit! That said, I have been taking my vehicles to this place for 20 yrs when a man named Dave owned it and Anton was one of his better mechanics. I recently had my car smogged at Automotive City at the Cedar Ridge Y on Brunswick (a huge thumbs up to them !) They found that I had coolant leak which would require a very expensive timing belt/water pump replacement ($700-850.) They also offered a FREE inspection of my entire car. I also needed my handbrake adjusted ($63.) They also recommended a transmission service ($130) because my transmission fluid was dirty, a possible oil change ($40) and since they were going to have my car for the day, I asked and they offered to take me home and then pick me up later. NOTE: This is NOT a service that Automotive City usually offers! They are just a nice group of guys! I WANTED to (was going to) take my car to Anton's because they used to do fine work...maybe they still do. But they've lost this 73 yr old woman's trust. ASIDE: I had called Anton's earlier (BEFORE I got my FREE inspection from Automotive City) to ask him what he would charge to do what Automotive City did for FREE. It would be $58 or $59, however, he would knock that price off any work I had done there. Fair enough, I suppose. But I no longer trust his word. Anyway, with the FREE inspection in my hand, I called Anton to ask him how much he would charge for the timing belt/water pump replacement. Without taking a breath he said $900. OK, how much to adjust my handbrake...$105 their HOURLY rate. Well, Anton, could you please give me a lift home until the work is done? "NO!" says he rather rudely and abruptly. Let's see: Automotive City's labor rates are $117/hr. Anton's $105/hr. AC would only charge $63 to adjust handbrake. Anton: $105 (their hourly rate) I got a FREE inspection from AC. Anton's inspection: $58-59 but would deduct IF you had repairs done there. The guys at AC would take me home and pick me up (this time) which is an approximate 17 mile roundtrip. Anton's shop is an approximate 10 mile roundtrip from my home. Ya jump on 49 south and BOOM, I'm home. No traffic, stop signs. But I got a harsh, flat out, "NO! I won't give you a lift!" Gee, Anton! I think you just lost (probably) over $1000 worth of business. Look, I DO NOT EXPECT nor do I DEMAND that I get a lift to and from my home while I spend 1000s (that are necessary but I really can't afford) on repairs. IF I had someone who could take me to and from, I wouldn't even ask. It's called excellent customer service! Caring about your small-town neighbors. You won't be getting my business anymore, Anton. I will be having over a $1000 worth of repairs done at a shop that cares about its customers. A shop who won't tell an 83 year old woman she needs a catalytic converter to pass smog. Why? Because not only have you been rude and abrupt with me when I've called with a question (not only with this scenario) but in the past, as well. You're a local, big shot business owner now and you may have your die-hard customers but please remember, NO business is too big to fail. Especially when they have lost trust in you and you've been unkind....to the point of being rude. I may be old and living below poverty level, but I will still dump a company or corporation that seems to have lost their character and willingness to value me as a customer and take my business elsewhere. I got Anton's number from somebody that just had their car smogged by him. My 1987 Toyota Landcruiser needs a lot of work and on top of the list was getting it through the smog and replacing the clutch master cylinder.
