Toni helped me at the peak of my menopause. I was fatigued, hot flashes, loss of motivation, daily blurred vision, loss of hair and couldn't focus. I put full trust in Toni to guide me in the process of lab requests from Obgyn and primary doctor and what hormone prescriptions to try. Along with that we did a Dutch test and filtered through my supplements. This took sometime but after I started taking her recommended supplements I felt more like myself again. Dr. Varela is intelligent and knows her craft well. She actually revealed things to me about my health that I was not aware of and that I found helpful. Why 3 stars? Dr. Varela's bedside manner and communication skill are not the best. I have worked with my fair share of holistic and natural practitioners and I'm a health care provider myself. When recommendations are being made clear explanations to patients are warranted. There were several instances where she spoke above my level of understanding regarding some natural treatments. When clarification was asked for, she simply repeated the same statement without any hint of awareness that adjustment in the explanation was needed. I: a) was not aware of the treatment, b) wanted to understand the mechanism behind these treatments and how they functioned, c) I did not understand what certain clinical/holistic terms meant in relation to my health. For example: What is this supplement's function? How long should I take it? Is it safe for long term use? I asked questions, as I typically do before I agree to anything, and sensed annoyance on her part with my questions. As stated by another reviewer, her tone can come across as condescending and impatient. Super weird there are two listings for the same person! So making sure I get this onto both! I went in for a vitamin c IV because I was feeling horrible - a cough and a sore throat, so something theoretically it'd help with. Toni was nice over the phone and saw me that day. In person she was quite condescending, and when I brought up that I'd read someone died after a hydrogen peroxide IV (reported by CBS) she just kind of shrugged. The IV also ached most of the time (I've had them before and they never have), which she said was standard despite uh, that never happening before. I didn't feel safe or particularly taken care of, and honestly the IV didn't make me feel better. I said "well, an IV can't cure a sore throat" and she smirked and said "oh it can" then gave the world's most vague answer as to why it wouldn't have, saying that uh, of course a hydrogen peroxide IV would have worked. If I ask questions, I don't need to be talked to like I'm stupid. You're shoving a needle in me, if it hurts, you're probably doing something wrong, and even if you're not, show a little more compassion. Especially for the cost. read more

I went to see her since traditional doctors were unable to figure out what was going on with my hormones and inability to lose weight. There were a couple of red flags that told me to leave, but I foolishly stayed and even bought the herbs she recommended. One of the red flags was when she told me that I was too young to be in peri menopause. I'm 52 years old, which is prime time for it, especially as my Mom went through it at 45 and there has shown to be a genetic link. The herbs she gave me upset my stomach and when I wrote her she recommended that I stop taking them. There isn't even a list of ingredients on the pills or the tincture to figure out what, specifically, I may be reacting to. So after spending over $500, I'm no better off, have useless herbs and less money. I would not recommend her. read more

Dr. Varela helped me through my cancer journey. She is thorough, knowledgeable and holistic. There are so many levels of care going through breast cancer: information overload (allopathic/non-allopathic), emotional, healing options/plans, care/support, testing options (on top of working full-time and raising 2 children). Dr. Varela was a huge factor in my treatment both through chemo and alternative treatments (high dose vitamin C, supplements, etc.), my getting past cancer, my continued health journey to this day (2 years post chemo) and her care for me as a person. i was referred to Dr. Varela from a friend & was a lil skeptical about seeing a holistic doctor cuz i am 1 of those people who wants to see instant result or else i don't think its working. But after giving birth i was not given a healthy check up even after 6 months later i knew i had to try something different. I was not healing as fast as other mothers w/normal vaginal delivery. it's my fault cuz instead of being in bed rest when i got home from the hospital i was too excited to being 20lbs lighter & still had unfinished housework before my baby arrived. Well w/the new baby home & little to no sleep for the 1st few months, my body was seriously in need of help. I asked my obgyn if there was anything i can take or do but all he told me was to let my body heal naturally. So after 2 mastitis later & doctors telling me there's really nothing i can take cuz i was breastfeeding, i decided to give Dr. Varela a call. I didn't know what to expect when i went in to see her. The front desk area was just like a doctor's office but they played meditation music. I thought Dr. Varela was a nurse when she came out to greet me. She looks so young. I didn't have time to look at her website or yelp (gasp) before i went so i was surprised when she introduced herself. We went in to her office & it is not like doctor's office where u only see an exam table, sink, & a chair. It was very warm & inviting. I felt like i was at a spa & going to have my facial done. We spoke for awhile. She actually listened to me & wasn't in a rush to get me out like my other doctors before. She explained everything to me so i can fully understand my diagnosis & how it'll be treated. When i left it felt as though i was leaving a friend's house. I drove an hour and a half to get to her clinic because I believed in her and what she have told me over the phone that she has dealt with patients like me and knows exactly what needs to be done. The first visit I was impressed by the kindness she showed me. I had an IV treatment with every mixture possible that made me restless, she then tried the lemon balm which really soothed me. I left her clinic happy that somebody knows what's going on and I am on my way to recovery with the supplements I bought from her.On the way back home I had to pull to the emergency lane because of a twitching and numbness attack that affected my upper body. On the second visit which was one week later , she gave me another IV treatment, I arrived to her clinic smiling , happy and full of hope that the adjustment in the treatment she will be doing will for sure make me feel better. The IV treatment made me completely restless and left her office feeling totally anxious and not feeling well with more and more products that she made me purchase . I drove back home and again , I had to pull to the emergency lane for the same reason mentioned above. Every product she gave me , I tried and had worsened my case except for the probiotic. Before meeting her I was able to drive and in Ok condition, after her treatment and her products , My situation has worsened and I only could drive now to grocery stores nearby or to my daughter's school. My understanding is that she overwhelmed my body with all the things she has put in my IV treatment and her supplements where triggering more immune response to the inflammation that I was having in my gut, when all my body needed was a supportive or maybe a hydration therapy and the time to heal before we can stimulate it. My experience was so disappointing not only because I was let down by her but also by the ethics as a naturopathic doctor she showed me which made me feel that it was all about the money and not treating me.
