I have IBS and have been experiencing a lot of very uncomfortable bloating for several days causing me to lose sleep. I'd never really considered a colonic but I just had this feeling of needing to be flushed out! Health2o was able to get me in with an urgent appointment the next day, which I really appreciate. As this was my first Colonic, I was a little nervous but my therapist Fariha did a fantastic job of helping me relax and understand what was going to happen. She started with an explanation of the colonic and then guided me along each step of the way so I knew what to expect and really made the whole thing as easy and pleasant as possible. She seems very experienced, has a calm, kind presence and was able to intuit how I was feeling, so I couldn't really have asked for better! She provided advice but didn't try to sell me on anything. Simply amazing. I did a 3 day cleanse that included juicing and daily colonics. I eat clean and exercise daily. I've juiced and I've had colonics before, but this time was different. Wow... Let's start with the basics. A colonic is a cleansing of the colon. A plastic tube is inserted into your rectum and warm water is pushed into the colon and then flushed out, taking with it the bowel's contents, which according to proponents, include built-up toxins and excretory material that adheres to the walls of the colon. The theory is that removing this built-up 'plaque' allows for better absorption of nutrients into the blood and speedier digestion. While there is debate over the benefits of colonics, those who administer/receive them rave about the payoffs: easier digestion, weight loss (I have lost 3 pounds in 45 minutes), better skin, to name a few. Why I wanted to try it: Without getting overly personal, let's just say I'm prone to digestive 'issues.' I should, by every gastroenterologist's account, be the perfect pooper-I eat more than enough fiber, workout regularly, and drink tons of water-but my digestion is never quite right. Though I've never been diagnosed with any real condition, I've always been somewhat fascinated by the idea of a colonic. I could just be 'flushed' out? Granted, some parts of the process seemed a bit off-putting. I wasn't thrilled by the idea of a tube up my bum. But having heard rave reviews from others, I decided it was time to see for myself if post-colonic euphoria was real, or, well, a load of crap. The colonic experience: Enter Health2o Spa, which is one of East Bay top colon hydrotherapy spa. Alice with over 30 years of experience, she immediately put me at ease with her uberenergetic and cheerful attitude. As I explained my digestive dilemmas to her, Alice assured me I wasn't alone. According to her, 95% of women have digestive problems, for a variety of physiologic and psychological reasons. Ideally, she says, you should be going to the bathroom after every meal. Every meal?! By that criteria, I was a pooping failure! (Other experts say there's no frequency 'rule,' and it's normal to have bowel movements anywhere from three times a day to three times a week.) After explaining each step in the process, Alice had me lay on my side while she inserted the tube. Those first few seconds were less than enjoyable. But she then made me take a few deep breaths and lay on my back, and I soon forgot that there was a foreign object in one of my orifices. Next came the water. A machine channels a gentle flow of warm water through the tube and into your colon. This goes on for 20 to 30 seconds and does not, I repeat, does not hurt. You can feel the water go in, and pressure starts to build-basically you feel like you may s*** in your pants-but this goes away once the water is released and everything flows out. During this process Alice alternated between applying oil, an old-school constipation remedy, and massaging my stomach. Yes, the feeling of the water going in and out takes some getting used to, but the tummy rubbing was downright pleasurable. My prognosis: The entire time Alice paid vigilant attention to what was passing through the tube, all the while accurately describing my diet. And Alice wasn't the only one watching the contents from the tube flow by; I too could see everything. I found this disgusting yet deeply satisfying. But I also love popping zits and pulling ingrown hairs. If that's not your deal, just ask your therapist to turn the machine around so that you can't see the contents. The ultimate cleanse This whole process (water in, water out, belly rub, repeat) went on for about an hour. Afterward, Alice escorted me to a private bathroom-some people have to go after, some don't. Scale showed that I was 3 pounds lighter! But even better than the instant deficit on the scale was how I felt, both physically and mentally. I walked in feeling tired, sluggish, bloated. I walked out feeling totally rejuvenated, ready to run a marathon, and with a super-flat tummy to boot. I felt even better the next day and raved about my clean colon to anyone and everyone who would listen. Research shows, and Alice confirmed, that the long-term benefits come only after regular colonics. And while I definitely plan on going back (I purchased a package of 10), the instant gratification and overall feeling of health after just one was good enough for me. Today I finished my 2nd colonic within a week and I am now a 100% believer in the tremendous benefits of colon hydrotherapy - and specifically getting them from Alice at Health2O. I have been curious about this process for a while and finally took the plunge because I'm doing "The Liver and Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse" (which I also HIGHLY recommend). The book suggests doing a colonic before and after each cleanse to make sure you've released all the gallstones from your intestines. So I searched around and found Alice. Alice is very knowledgeable, attentive, friendly and wise. She made me feel at ease right away and I immediately trusted her with my 'removal' business. She always knew what was going in or coming out and intuitively knew how to respond to me when I started to feel uncomfortable or got a little anxious or forgot to breathe. Her attentiveness made all the difference in allowing me to trust the process and relax. The office feels like a spa and there is an excellent acupuncturist on site to handle all your complementary medicine needs. My second visit was much easier for me both physically - because I'd removed so much in the session prior and more importantly mentally - because I knew what to expect. After each session I discovered my eyes were brighter, I felt lighter (actually weight 1lb less) and had more energy! I always say you have to try things out at least once, and well...i tried this place out 2x instead. LOL. The whole place does have a welcoming and relaxing feel to it. Very clean and sterile environment, honest and smart employees that make you feel very comfortable. I did notice a difference after both treatments, I had a "lighter" feeling with my whole body; but then again it makes sense since you just had waste flushed from your body. I found that, due to demand and my schedule, it was difficult to book future appointments once the vouchers were out there. The procedure is professional, clean, educational as others have described. I'd recommend hydrating in the days before to get the most of the experience. The only downside was that my therapist, Kathleen Lane, tried to sell me Nature's Sunshine products so much that she must be getting some sort of commission since she even said if I went to their website, to provide her name and i.d. The way she talked about it, every product is a cure all. She is great in terms of the actual procedure, talking you through it, answering questions. I'd simply suggest toning down the sales pitch. Amazing people, and great service. It was my first time doing colon hydrotherapy and I was nervous. That being said, I was very pleased with the treatments I received and the reassurance the staff provided. I do have to admit that I was skeptical at first. I considered myself to be a pretty healthy individual. I was a division-one track and field athlete, ate a plant-based diet, and had a body fat under 10%. To add onto that, I went into the therapy during day 13 of my water fast. I felt like the therapy wasn't going to do much for a "healthy" person. I soon found out how "healthy" I was. I won't get too graphic on this review, but I was shocked to see what came out of me. I had read about parasites, but never in a million years would I have thought that I could have them inside of me.
