The Grill On the Corner - Fillet steak

We visited The Grill on the Corner during their manic 50% off January deal (50% off food - too good…read moreto resist!). I've dined her quite a few times so knew what to expect - a good selection of steaks and tasty starters. And after last year's cocktail making masterclass, my first request was a passion fruit sling. The bar girl whipped it up really quickly and clearly with lots of skill, and served up one of the best cocktails I've had in a long time - and it was topped with half a passion fruit. And only £6.50 which I think is a good price for a cocktail in the city centre. We had arrived early for drinks in the bar before our dinner booking and got a booth. I really like the bar area, I think it's generous size and comfy booths would make a good cocktail stop whether or not you were dining there. Right on time, a waitress came to collect us for our table and took our coats so all we had to carry were our drinks which I thought was a nice touch. The dining area in the GOTC is really beautiful - lots of glitz and glamour with the leather seats, chandeliers and the fairy lights in the window. Our table was an oval shaped booth tucked away in a corner as our booking was for 8 people but there was only 6 of us. This was probably my only criticism of the evening - the way the booth was shaped made conversation difficult (and with the background noise) so you could only really talk to the people immediately next to you. If there had of been 8 of us I think it would have been a lot worse! I started with cheddar and spring onion croquettes. Three croquettes with a portion of salad, these were lovely and crisp. I think the filling needs a bit more of a punch to it as the flavours are a bit mild but I think that's how they're meant to be. I'd definitely get them again though as I am croquette-obsessed. Because we were getting 50% off, I decided to go for the fillet steak on the "Best of British menu" - this is a changing menu where they feature a few cuts at a premium price. I can't remember which beef was featured on that menu but it was around £34 for a fillet steak of 220g. I opted for blue cheese sauce and chips with mine. The steak was a little pale on the outside - I like a nice sear on it but not enough to complain about. It was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and I had no trouble devouring the whole thing! The sauce was lovely and rich and a really good sized jug so I didn't run out. The chips are consistently good - rough cut with the skin still on and lovely and crispy. I had a lemon sorbet to finish. I remember last time I ordered this it had a slightly strange taste but there wasn't anything of the sort this time. The bill came to around £35 each - that was for a cocktail, 3 course meal and soft drinks. Seriously good value and a fantastic night out. Moving into February they're doing a lobster deal so I think I'll be tempted back sooner rather than later!

Meat cooked well. Appetizers were small. 2.50 for a tiny bowl of brocolli and such. Overall price…read morewas reasonable. Very modern interior - was expecting old world steakhouse - more bistro than cigar bar. I was hoping for worn wood and brass and found black leather walls and slate floors. I booked online but it was not necessary - lots of tables around 7pm on a Friday. Service was good and prompt.

The steaks in particular are highly recommended. With a vast and vibrant conservatory round the back, it's a particularly good place for large groups and is family friendly, although perhaps one to be avoided on the days of bigger Rangers' games given its slight leanings towards the Ibrox men.

It was after my friends and I had completed a stellar visit to the nearby Auchentoshan Distillery…read more(and were feeling appropriately sloshed) that we decided some grub was in order to help sop up all the whiskey. At the recommendation of our guide (a local), we took a surprisingly pleasant walk through the forest nearby and ended up smack dab in front of Glen Lusset. As you're not exactly spoilt for choice with regards to food in the area, I still left feeling quite chuffed with our good fortune by the end of our meal! The first thing you'll notice about the Glen Lusset is that it's mighty spacious. There's a bar area and a restaurant area, and we were seated in a sort of covered dining room portion that allowed us to appreciate the drizzle just outside and being warm and toasty on the inside. Our service was prompt and friendly, and in no short order a variety of food had arrived for us to sample. For me, I'd decided one round of starches wasn't enough, and had some cajun potato skins (NOM) followed by a macaroni main with chips instead of the normal garlic bread (proof that I was thinking with mah belly). The food was delish, and I heard no complaints out of my friends either. The atmosphere was pleasant as well, with a wide variety of clientele, from folk our age, to families with children, and older folk all seemingly comfortable and enjoying themselves. All in all we left Glen Lusset feeling full and satisfied. If you're in the area, or like us, are travelers looking for a meal after some serious dram-age, then certainly give Glen Lusset a go!

We were seated immediately, didn't have to wait. The place was packed, with only two or three two-person tables open indoors. We sat next to a couple that ordered the seafood platter. And by golly, it was enormous! It's such a good deal for 95 pounds. The crab, mussels, lobster, and all looked soooo good. We weren't that hungry that evening so decided to opt in for half dozen fresh oysters (which were delicious) and each ordered a fish from their special menu of the day. Everything was super well flavoured and seasoned. Beware of bones in the whole fish! The halibut was very meaty. A bit overcooked in one end but acceptable because of the sauce it came with. You can't find a lot of tasty vegetable dishes in Scotland but this dish has squash and broccolini that was perfectly cooked and seasoned (in other words not just smoothered with salt). I'd definitely come here regularly if I were a local!
