Tony's is a local hardware store that's close to my house. I prefer to shop small businesses in my community so this fits the ticket. You will pay a tiny bit more here than big box stores but that's okay when you know you won't be standing in long lines, deal with crabby staff and can get assistance carrying something to your car if needed. Tony's usually has what I'm looking for but doesn't always have a huge selection of some items. But if you're looking for helpful service, someplace to get a key cut or a gallon of paint without having to travel too far, Tony's is your place. read more

I prefer to visit small independent stores. I bought a large fan and had to wait for my husband to pick me up. It was 95 degrees outside and across the street was a large shade tree. I piled my purchases in the shopping cart and waited under the tree where I told my husband I would wait. My plan was to load my stuff in the car and return the cart. An employee came out to tell me this was personal property and it had to be returned, not "can I help you?" I am an older woman and just purchased over $100 at the store, seriously, I need this cart? I returned the cart and struggled to carry the items to my shady spot. Meanwhile, a woman in another car told me to stop stealing! My daughter lives in this neighborhood so I am there a lot. This review is for the ONLINE ordering with Ace Hardware of Hazel Park, Michigan. I attempted to order a snowblower online and it said online that the snowblower was in stock. I get up this morning the snowblower ordered was cancelled. Ace Hardware had no problem with IMMEDIATELY taking the payment off of my debit card for 750.00 for a snowblower but I called the 888-827-4223 to see when my money would be deposited back into my account; I was told 7-10 business days!!!! Don't believe the negative reviews of the people who have a thin skin or an axe to grind because they don't get price matching from a company with the buying power of 2000 stores (yeah, the guy complaining about price matching, you're an absolute idiot). HD and Lowe's are on my daily route, so I shop there as well, but this is where you go when you want real answers. And that's assuming you can get somehow to help you at those big box stores. I don't care about saving $5 dollars when these guys save me time, gas, and frustration by giving me tips on how to do the job right. This is the hardware store we most typically frequent. It's an ACE, so it has most of the things you'd expect. The part that I appreciate most about this store is that the staff are incredibly helpful... first of all they are actually AVAILABLE to help you - unlike the horrendous task of tracking someone down at a Lowe's or Home Depot - but they are also knowledgeable about their products and whatever small project you are trying to do yourself at home. I live really close to the store, but my dad who lives a good 20 minutes away has driven here to get items for his own products. It's the quality of service that you get from small shops that make the difference. Their hours are limited compared to the big box stores, so no 9 PM runs to get something you forgot to buy initially. I'm not going to pretend that I'm above going to Lowe's or Home Depot, but I definitely feel better about myself when I drop into this local hardware store. :) read more

Needed a screen repaired for an emergency situation and these folks handled it beautifully. I love the quirky old school atmosphere and the sense that everyone enjoys working there. Everyone from the guys behind the help desk to the girls at the register were friendly and in good spirits. A customer was leaving as I was walking in and he exclaimed "Tony's does it again!" I've held back from submitting this review because I had hoped things would change. After my experience today, I have to say something: Save your money and go to Lowes or Home Depot. The prices are so much better and the customer service blows Tony's away. Not to mention they'll match prices and do so without a lecture on the cost of doing business in the shadow of a larger retailer. For the last 8 years that I've lived in Hazel Park I have tried to shop at Tony's. I like supporting local businesses, but nearly every time I shop there I am appalled at how rude the manager is or how rude the cashiers are. Since they've had several cashiers over the 8 years I shopped there I can only assume they're a reflection of their manager. The cashiers rarely greet me with a smile or bother to exchange even the most basic of pleasantries. They're often flat out rude or engaged in conversation with each other and can't be bothered to stop and deal with my purchase without a major attitude. Today was no different. I brought my purchase to the counter, she looked at me, rang up my items and said the total. That's it. The manager (Owner?), Craig is the same rude, nonchalant person his cashiers are. In the past I have asked him to match prices with Lowes or Home Depot (both of which will match the prices of any competitor) only to be literally laughed at and lectured on how he has to charge more than them to stay in business and how price matching will never happen for that reason. It's fine if you don't, but I don't need the lecture neither is it my problem that the cost of doing business is so high for you. I am already in your store shopping and it seems like he'd rather chase away dollars to save pennies. The lone bright spot here is the floor staff who are usually very attentive and somewhat knowledgeable in their respective departments. However today as I stood in an aisle trying to match up pieces of ductwork I overheard two of them bad-mouthing previous customers. When I walked to another aisle and circled the shelves trying to find what I needed I literally had to ask two other floor people, who were having a conversation with each other, to move out of the way so I could get past. Neither offered to help me which was a new experience. If you're in the Hazel Park area, save your money and time and just go to Home Depot or Lowes. It's not worth the hassle. I tried to give them a chance. Many, many chances over 8+ years, in fact, and it's still awful. There are better local businesses to support, ones who genuinely care about their customers and go out of their way to show it. I will not pay more to be treated poorly any more. I try to buy local whenever possible but for hardware, I'm done buying from Tony's. They don't care so neither do I. read more

I really like this Ace Hardware. It reminds me of the stores of my childhood where you had a little bit of everything along with helpful staff. I try to go here instead of Home Depot or Lowe's if I can because unlike the previous reviewer, the staff at those stores make me mental constantly asking if I need help. They had cabinet liners marked for 1.79/25y and the owner told me they were 1.79/y and after I explained what the difference was he told me I was illiterate and couldn't read which for someone clearly smarter than him is a little redundant. I have visited this store several time for various reasons and every time the staff has gone above and beyond to provide excellent advice and product information. Tony's Ace Hardware is our go to store. I have been going to this store for 20 years. The staff is great to deal with. They are very knowledgeable and are willing to take the time to understand your project to provide you with the product you need as well as some advice. The selection of products is above par. Most of the time the have the item that I need for my 1940s bungalow when the box stores don't. They have recently expanded into the adjoining store front and improved their paint department. read more

This is still truly the "Hometown Hardware Store". I have shopped here for over 10 years and have never had anything but great experiences. When you walk in the door, you are immediately greeted and offered excellent customer service. I also go to the Big Box stores, but I would gladly spend the extra buck to have a staff that actually comes to you and asks you if you need help, not pushing a button on a pole in the store and waiting 15 minutes for service. Excellent variety of everything you would expect from a hardware store, and then some. If they don't have it, chances are the staff will find a way to get it for you, as they have done for me on several occasions. Tony's is totally acceptable if you need to grab a quick item for a project. Most of the employees are very nice and helpful except for one. Somehow, I always get directed to this one grump. He constantly acts condescending, and stares open mouthed and scoffing at me when I ask a question. He always acts as if, as a woman, I can't possibly know what I am talking about. However, when I explain an item to him he responds with "YEAH, I KNOW" and then has to ask another employee for an explanation. I really want to like shopping at Tony's, but this floor employee really needs to be taught that one's gender doesn't affect their ability to understand and complete home improvement tasks. read more
