The time and frustration saved is worth any slight increase in cost...but it even seems like the prices are very competitive. They're located in most major cities, and they're cheaper for similar items at the bigger name stores. I ended up returning all of the things I had purchased from the bigger chain. For example, cheap safety glasses were around $2.50, while the big box store chain had a similar pair for about $8.00. Most importantly, I wish I would have gotten the cashier's name because he made several suggestions, which assisted my project team. He understood that I needed him to write down what he was saying since I am Deaf.

I have been coming to Gilbert's for a little over 10 years now. It seems they always the things the box box stores don't have. This is a hardware store the way hardware stores used to be. I come in here mostly for stem and diverter rebuilds for the old bath/shower systems in rental properties: they will rebuild the hot, cold and diverter stems while you wait. I have always been very pleased with their services and they also build screens for windows and replace screens if you bring them in. Overall, Gilbert's is a great hardware store with good pricing and very helpful employees.

My contractor had 16' pressure treated deck boards delivered from John's lumber. They really looked…read moresad and they were filled with knots (about 10- 15 knots per board). My contractor specified that we wanted "premium" boards - but the sales guy at John's told him that "premium" was just a marketing gimmick. When I called he gave me the same excuse. When I asked about the #2 & #1 stamps on the boards - he just reiterated his stance. I then called Fingerle Lumber and asked about pressure treated premium boards - they gave me the real scoop and I ordered new boards from Fingerle. They are beautiful, and almost knot free. They are also stamped "premium". We returned the sad boards to John's. Why 2 stars? Maybe the sales guy was just uneducated or new- benefit of the doubt.
