The market always hosts fun live music, and more than once I have spotted an inter-generational dance party by the band. Both handicap and stroller accessible, there is surely something for everyone at the Rhinebeck Farmers Market. In terms of parking, I recommend checking if there are open spaces at the lot where the market takes place. People are always coming and going, so you might just get a spot!

Just another example of the fine things one can get themselves into through reading Lydia L's reviews! Because this was a fine market to visit on a fine October day. Although we've consumed lots (LOTS) of wine, we've never tried mead and with Lydia's review to back us up, we tried some and bought some too. (Which would be enjoyed later on in the day with cheese from Dancing Ewe and seckel pears from Migliorelli's, both of the Rhinebeck Market.) Don't pass up the chewy, delightful pretzel rolls! We bought several to give to our friends in NJ and they were a BIG hit. (Seasonal cranberry / apple and also sea salt. Also found at the New Paltz market.) There were fewer farmers at this market on this October Sunday but the produce vendors there had top quality items. And the friendly woman at the info booth at the end of the market was offering samples of home baked apple crisp as well as tastings of local applies. More to love about the Rosendale Market...ample parking. Yahoo! Were we HRV residents it would be a regular stop for us.

Actually, if you live here you are probably cursing me right now in hippie speak because you have been coming here for 20 years.* Actually, if you live here, you probably aren't looking up your favorite farmer's market on Yelp so I'll just have at it. In 12-15 vendors or so you will find everything that you need to eat healthy and well. From meat to vegetables to fruit to other more savory items (pie, honey), you can easily do your shopping for the week sans beverages. It's an extremely friendly and community oriented atmosphere, accepting of anyone who wants to partake in the festivities. As a side to the market on Maple St., there is a flea market area where there are also food vendors, tents and picnic tables to enjoy your food and some live music. If you are lucky, you will even get to witness some dancing that has probably been going on here since the actual Woodstock. Get a couple tacos from Black Eyed Suzies and do yourself a big favor and get some pretzel bread from that nice lady with the pretzel stand. If you really want to treat yourself, get a chocolate filled pretzel croissant. Actually, get three and send me one...or all three. With Woodstock not full of too much to do at night, this market that spills over into the evening is the perfect opportunity to eat, shop, mingle with the locals and enjoy the cross section of Woodstock that makes it such a relaxing and inviting place to spend some time. _____________ *Sorry.

Now that we're living in The Catskills, my quest to find that similar market prototype I grew to love in Westchester, continues. I had forgotten hubs and I came here before during one of our bi-annual trips to The Catskills. Recently though, when I searched for produce markets near work in Highland, Wallkill View in New Paltz popped up within a short driving distance. As you drive past all of New Paltz bustling shops and restaurants on Main St, you'll soon approach a sleepy farmland area overlooking Mohonk Preserve in about 5 or so minutes. I've been hard-pressed to find a market that tops my favorite one in Westchester and checks all the boxes. Wallkill View grows and sells a nice mix of produce the area has to offer. And when veggies and fruit aren't grown on-site or in season, they're sourced from elsewhere. Unlike other farm markets that operate only Sat+Sun, Wallkill V. is open everyday. Well...almost. These folks shut down for Christmas and throughout the winter- reopening in March. Prices are about $1 more than what I paid down in White Plains- but hey... I get it. Service is great though.

We've been getting amazing apples and stone fruit from the Maynard farms at the Williamsburg…read morefarmers market for years. But last fall, we had an experience at the orchard itself that we will never forget. We had the best day walking for hours around the beautiful orchard and picking apples. On the way back to the car with our big bag of fruit we realized that neither of us had the key to the car! It must have dropped at some point in the orchard. We were doomed! There was no way we were going to find a small car key within the fields. We walked around for a while looking and gave up we were about to call for a tow. Then we came upon one of the farmers driving the tractor, and showed him the only picture we had taken that entire day. He looked at it for a few seconds and went off in search of the key. 10 or 15 minutes later, we saw him calling for us in the distance. As we got closer, we saw him laughing and shaking his head - amazingly, he had found the needle in the haystack, and we were saved! That day we also got to meet his daughter and grandson, who were taking a ride on his tractor through the orchard and picking apples of their own. Maynard's apples and stone fruit worlds above any of the others we can find in the area, and we stock up every Saturday. But in addition to the quality of the fruit, the farmers are all so nice and always let you taste what's in season before you purchase. And after this experience, it was clear to us that Maynard farms is truly family and community-oriented organization, and made us even happier to buy our fruit from them every week. I've never tried my hand at growing mushrooms but it's always been a dream of mine! The owners enthusiastically and thoroughly explained the process and provided online resources, including recipes! And let me tell you, when this baby produced shrooms it was so satisfying! Visually beautiful and heavenly to eat! (See pics of the burger I topped with them). I have since run into them at my local farmers market. If you see them stop in and chat! And grab a mushroom block! They are affordable (maybe $25 or so?) and easy to grow! Not a gardener? Buy some unique mushroom varieties from them. You can't go wrong!
