My husband and I drive 70 miles each way to experience Helena's, and we were not disappointed. We took our roadster convertible out for a lively drive today and arrived around 1:00. We ordered 2 dozen pierogis, 12 of the potato and garlic and 12 of the spinach, potato and garlic. We took a seat at one of the tables and sat back and enjoyed our lunch. The pierogis were warm and delicious!! So fresh and tasty. People were coming in every 2 minutes and the line never stopped. Next time we will try her other flavors! read more

Great, hand made perogies for something like 20 years. Loved the kielbasa, too. Come for the food but don't expect much more. No frills. Not a lot of seating (two tiny tables, a small row of seats near the wall, a lone picnic tables outside). You can sit here but the place is mainly for takeout. Pierogies by the dozen only, in Ziploc bag. A lot of varieties in menu but not all available, even if you get here early. Very nice staff. read more

I've finally found my pierogies that remind me of the churches back home (Cleveland)! Yesterday I bought potato, cheese, onion and potato and farmers cheese. I also bought the cabbage salad and beet salad. All the proceeds from the salads go to Ukraine. Both of the salads were delish. And so far I've only tried the potato cheese onion pierogies and I can already tell, this is my place. I finally found it and I'm happy. Authentic, quick, delicious, and filling. For 20 dollars you can get 12 delicious and fully stuffed pierogis with a bottle of water and snapple. The dough of the pierogis seemed as if it was intentionally undercooked which made the dough deliciously chewy. They were the best i've ever had hands down. The environment is artistic and homey. There were four seating tables with 4 seating placements per table . There were handmade items for sale and a stack of luggage in front of their publicity shrine which tells their warm story of their recipe that they learned from their grandmother. It's important to keep places like this alive,diverse culture is crucial and what makes this country great. I'm so grateful for the experience at this grade A joint. read more

I had stalked this place out on Yelp when we booked our getaway up here. We stopped in on the way to where we were staying since they're only open 12-5 and closed Tuesday and Wednesday. (We were staying Monday-Wednesday.) We had originally planned eating in, but by the time we got up there we weren't too hungry - so we took some pierogies to go to heat up later. Given that it was the day after St. Patrick's day, they had a special that day for corned beef and cabbage stuffed pierogies. It was $15 for the dozen and it came with dipping sauce. This is the ONLY pierogi you will ever need to eat in your lifetime. Never mind the excellent kielbasa (yes, it's excellent) and the delightful service. This is, literally, the only pierogi you'll ever need. When was the last time you ate a pierogi without wishing you had some sour cream to dip them in? Sour cream never crossed my mind. I just bit into this beautifully, lovingly, hand made pierogi and moaned. Then I grabbed for another one. I recall the first time my wife and I stumbled onto this place about 12 years ago - before they were a cafe - when they just had a little side door at the Taylor Rental place and a window inside a room the size of a small walk-in closet. We bought a few bags of their amazing offerings and went back to the car. We were going to bring them home but they were so warm we couldn't resist just tasting one. In that moment it was over for me. We kept eating them one after the other until the bag was empty. And my 2 year old daughter in the back seat saying "More Rogie daddy! More Rogie!!". So. Good. I'm currently enjoying some spicy kielbasa and some Thanksgiving pierogies: potato, turkey, cranberry, stuffing, and corn. All inside the pierogies!! It's a delicious combo. I have to pace myself otherwise I'm going to eat all dozen and find myself in a food coma. The potato-onion and potato-bacon are also delicious; I wish we could do a mix-and-match order instead of having to (usually) buy by the dozen. (Sometimes you can get a half dozen if they happen to have a smaller portion bagged up) The best way to heat these up, in my opinion, is to microwave for less than a minute and then finish in a pan with a little butter. If you just microwave them they get soggy, but if you go from fridge to pan, the outside gets too done by the time the inside gets hot enough. If you want pierogies that taste like they were made by someone's Polish grandmother, this is the place. read more

Our last visit was in mid October. We arrived early Sunday afternoon and they ran out of pierogi. We bought some kielbasa and came back. They placed a sign on the door that they would return at 3. I'm admitting a weird quirk here. My husband and I love to seek out weird Roadside America attractions. So on our way upstate one day, we took a side trip to see the world's second largest lawn gnome (Stay with me, this is all related, I swear). We get to the gnome, placed in the field on a farm- taking photos and being goofy....and it occurs to me look across the street to see what the gnome is staring at. It's a brick building - and not much else is in the area. I squint and see a sign that reads "Pierogies." With much speed, we jump in the car and go across the street - and no lie - PIEROGIES! It's a strange building, and a strange shop - but there are SO. MANY. AMAZING. PIEROGIES. So many flavors - savory, sweet, seasonal flavors. There are the classics - potato, potato + farmer's cheese, potato +sauerkraut, as well as newer versions like potato, cheddar + jalapeno, and potato + bacon ranch. She'l heat them up for you and you can take a seat and eat them there or you can take a bag home. I did both! In the middle of nowhere in an unassuming building there is a little cozy place with great homemade pierogi. My DH had heard of Helena's (Polish/Ukrainian descent) from a coworker. So on a beautiful spring afternoon we took the hour drive up to Kerhonkson via the scenic byway of the Shawangunk Mountain. The pierogi are sold by the dozen. You can choose to eat there, but same rule applies..a dozen. Canned sodas, iced teas and water is available to purchase as well as the expected sour cream. Apparently they used to have just window service, but recently were able to expand and remodel and now have a cute dining area with multiple tables and chairs. Paper plates, plastic silverware are supplied. They had about a dozen different flavors of pierogi fresh and still warm when we walked in, including a dessert strawberry pierogi. We chose the bacon, potato and scallion pierogi to eat in store along with a couple Cokes and sour cream. Take it from a Polish girl who grew up with her aunt making homemade pierogi only on holidays - these are VERY GOOD. They were still warm and are also big and are a perfect thickness of dough. They would be EXCELLENT, but they weren't finished off by frying them with some Vidallia onion and butter. Ya know when they get crispy in areas...but some people like them in the oven, others fried so I get it..ya prep them for the every person. We ended up buying another dozen of the bacon, potato and scallion to take home along with the Farmers Cheese. If you can't decide on a flavor they do offer sample pierogi. The owner of the pierogi place waited on us, when I showed interest in the buffalo chicken pierogi, she heated one up from the freezer and let us try it. But although the pierogi were awesome and a taste of childhood, the owner reminded me of family. She insisted on "make ourselves at home" and watch our faces as we ate our first bites to ensure we liked them, that they had enough bacon because she would quickly change that if need be. Tips: Because it is so unassuming, look for it across from Kilder's Farm..there's giant gnome near the road. Ask for a sample. If you want a recipe tweaked..spiciness of the buffalo chicken, more bacon, etc..but they do that in numbers of 5 dozen. read more

We were planning to go for a hike at a nearby state park and the restaurant we originally wanted to go to was closed. I'm kind of glad though, because after a quick search. I found this place. Specializing in pierogies and sharing a building with a hardware store, this unassuming spot serves up some of the best pierogies I've had. We got the classic potato and onion, but they have lots of other varieties to try. The dough was soft and the filling perfectly seasoned. These are so darned delicious that I have decided to only eat a few sitting at one of their new tables - or have them for company! I think every type I've tasted so far has been really delicious. Substantial but not overly heavy, and the flavors are amazing....even with the really simple ones.
