One afternoon, we had planned to take a walk on the Forbidden Drive, but found that it was very crowded, so we decided to check this out instead - and we're glad we did! There isn't much parking at the house, so part of me hopes it stays fairly hidden. From the house, though, it's a short walk to the preserve, complete with boardwalks and a paved walkway. We had brought the hiking pack to hold the baby on the Forbidden Drive, but this path is very stroller-friendly, so we may do that next time. At the end of the paved path, there's a grassy trail that you can continue on, and we saw people walking back from it, but we didn't check it out this time. We'll try to come back in the future for another look, though!

This preserve is across from the Erdenheim farm, which at the time of this review had a gorgeous field of flowers in bloom. The preserve is made up of a boardwalk type area/paved trail, with an offshoot around a field (grass) but to a dead end (so you double back). You can hear many birds calling around the boardwalk. On the grass trail, you can get a beautiful view of the tree line, grazing cows, and the meadow. It's lovely in the fall to see the trees just starting to change colors. Zero shade so bring a hat, sunscreen, or sunglasses if it's sunny. No amenities other than a gravel parking lot. It doesn't take long to walk through but if you go at a leisurely pace, you can make an hour of it.

Plenty of paved, unpaved, gravel and dirt trails that offer easy hikes throughout the park. Pavilions, picnic areas, playground equipment, a volley ball pit and pool all scattered about the 300+ acres of parkland. It does get crowded on the weekends in summer but weekdays you can catch a nice walk in with relatively minimal human interaction. NSP is well maintained and has plenty of facilities. Perfect for a quiet weekday walk or a day at the park with the family. For me, it reminds me of a younger time when my work ethic was formed and my love of nature began.

People along the path are friendly and just enjoying the day. It's a perfect path to practice for the Broad Street Run if you are local. A pleasant surprise if an eatery around Bryn Mawr I believe that offers food & drinks if you need to take a break. It's so easy that in an hours time you realize you have walked 4 miles. My friend and I…read morevisited on a Sunday afternoon and it basically looked like a Rockwell painting out there...older couples strolling, families riding bikes, kids with fishing rods, etc. Everyone is super friendly and the vibe is just wonderful. The trail is great for the novice bike rider like myself. It is paved which is good for my ridiculously impractical cruiser three speed bike. Mile markers as well as historical little signs help you keep your bearings and learn a thing or two along the way. There is plenty of parking, which makes it easier to come out and enjoy the outdoors!

The cool thing about this park is that you can go places in it you have never been before every time. We parked off of Henry Avenue and went around to the stables where I have never been before. My friend says there is usually a lot of horses there and the people who work there are very friendly. Hung out with some barn. Cats saw one horse, but it was a Sunday so... there was a field of buttercups that told me I would soon be having a coronary. It was idyllic. Then this little switch back took us to the water right by kitchen lane and we waded and watched the tadpoles. I may or may not have fallen and continued to roll into the water deeper until I was up to my neck lying down, which is funny. Apologies to the tadpoles. Some highlights I know from the past, are walking up to the statue of a native, who is apparently not a statue of who it says it is so I'm not even gonna include the name because it's not really him and I don't know how to spell the whole thing except that the word Teddy is in front of it. But that is a really cool hike if you can even call it a hike. Maybe 3 miles and the stairs to help you and all the trails have trees painted certain way so you know which trail you're on and where you're going. Next, I think I'm gonna check out the hermit cave off of -you guessed it - Hermitage Rd - which for some reason I've never been to before. Just so you know, there are also barbecues and various places around the park you can bring charcoal briquettes to and have your whole family out there. It's very much dog friendly. See them cooling off in the water a lot. And hey, it was 1985 when I got attacked by dogs here so no hard feelings on that front. A lot of people don't know that this is also really Fairmount Park and not to connect to each other and you can walk all the way to the art museum if you would like. Just look up a trail map. I believe it is either 8 or 10 miles one way though. Yes it's a huge park. Actually it is the largest city park in the US as far as I am aware that has every thing natural preserved. I don't know why it's not all called Fairmount Park anymore but the fact that all of this water starts in a parking lot in the Montgomery Mall - which I found out from the friends of the Wissahican page - is pretty incredible. It's a great way to spend a nice afternoon and it's pretty in the fall spring summer and I don't like the winter so who knows what it looks like then. Probably pretty for people who like the winter.

Note that I live in U-City, so the fact that such a massive trail system exists in only a ~20 minute drive, depending on which part of the park I start in, is a blessing and keeps my sanity. Friends of Wissahickon does a great job maintaining trails and even expanding the system over the past few years. I don't think I've ever observed an unseemly part of the park. Definitely unseemly times of year like the snow thaw or the time between the trees dying and the snow falling, but otherwise, this park is beautiful all times of year. I've never had a hard time parking, never even had trouble with crowds even around the most popular trails (ex. Forbidden Drive). Even the bikers are friendly and patient here! Would strongly recommend not only visiting but coming back to keep exploring! I'm still finding new gems in this massive trail system.

This park has: - a gravel parking lot with portable toilet - paved trails - fenced-in playground - a small lake with fountain (I've seen people fish here) - large gazebo with outdoor grill available for reservations - doggy bags for your furkid - wooded trail area in back of the park All-in-all, an awesome place for families. If you need refreshments, there is a shopping center (with Corropolese, Saxby's) not too far down.

Kitchens lane has been a point of contention for years now. I see community posts about dog beach and dog meet ups at kitchen lane. I would like to see signs or notice reenforcing the rules of the Wissahickon creek. Dogs are to be on a leash at all times 6ft maximum. I have had countless amount of hostile interactions with Dog owners explaining the rules. I have 3 small children that I fish with at Kitchens lane with. 1st for the protection of my children dogs should be on a leash , 2nd I purchase a fishing license every year. Which permits me to fish in the wissahickon creek. Please correct me if I am wrong. There is no such permit or license which allows dog owners to let there dogs roam freely thru the Wissahickon or Fairmount park. Again I understand everyone want to enjoy nature. However there are rules in place for people's protection & enjoyment. I am simply asking these rules to be enforced

I love Fischer's Park!! I don't live too far from here, so I have been here countless times growing…read moreup. There's much to love about this park, so much to do. You see families eating lunch/dinner at the pavilions, events like parties, kids running around the swing sets (as I did years ago), joggers, dog walkers, cyclists, you name it. They even have a small pond and waterfall in the back and an amphitheater!! My personal favorite thing to besides meeting up with friends is to take a walk and clear the mind. It is very peaceful and they have many paths that go through forest's and around the area, even I haven't fully explored this park!! Going at evening/sundown is my favorite time to go (as pictured below). If anyone is in the area and is looking to do something outdoors, look no further than Fischer's Park. Even if it is a leisurely stroll, it's worth it.
