My dog retuned from Top Dog with a several day old wound (confirmed by her vet) with a fever. She had been signed up for daily nature walks and I asked them how it could be possible they didn't notice the wound if she was out for daily walks. They admitted they didn't actually give her nature walks (although they charged me) got defensive, and did not seem to act too concerned about investigating how she got the injury. My money was eventually returned, but my veterinarian was worried that animal neglect was occurring at this facility. Anyway, according to public records this facility has been found to be out of code by the Department of Animal Welfare twice now ( http://www.ncagr.gov/vet/aws/BoardingKennelsandPetShops.htm ) including for not checking on the dogs daily. If your dog came back from Top Dog injured, I would suggest filing a claim with the state of NC. read more

New to area; called around to see who had experience grooming 4 yr. old Husky (wooly purebred). Talked to Nick at length about our dog and felt comfortable and scheduled appointment. Showed up to appointment to be told this is not a Husky; this is a Malamute. Appalled I responded; no you're wrong, he's AKC registered Husky. His response...I'm a AKC judge and this isn't a Husky, insisting he was the end all be all on the breed. Wow; don't know what to say at this point as we have never been questioned about his breed... we know what we have, found a reputable breeder, picked up fur baby at 8 weeks old with AKC and bloodline papers- so to dispute me and say... had I known his size (which by the way, our baby is a normal size for a Husky) I wouldn't have scheduled two grooming today and I will take the lady behind you since she boards here. Never have I been so disrespected and it certainly is not a warm welcome to NC. Honestly, kind of relieved after stepping inside, although didn't appreciate the disrespect, glad it led me to explore further. Keeping the faith everything happens for a reason and I'm confident the perfect groomer; who feels like family is out there! read more

Our dog came home after 3 days with feces up to her elbows, a chew toy that reeked of urine, and was cowering in her kennel when the employee went in to get her. We had to give her a bath when we got home, and she acted like she hadn't drunk water or eaten food in days. On top of that, it seems were were charged for services not delivered (can we prove that? no---which is part of the problem). We feel terrible and won't ever subject our dog to this place again. Meant to get this out sooner but here's my experience. During the summer I brought my fur baby here during our short visit. I brought my fur baby in for 2 days in a row. I had a very positive experience. My dog was happy and had no issues. The staff were extremely friendly and professional. Had a delightful chat with the owner. I would use them again whenever I come back to the area. My dog is extremely shy about being away from me, and he did really well both days to my relief. read more

I totally love Top Dig Kennel. I've been taking my dogs there for 7 years now. The owner, Nick, has shown Cavalier Spanoaks and still does, locally. He is present at the Kennel a good deal of the time and it is very apparent that he loves the little critters. He also grooms dogs (and does a wonderful job). I would not go anywhere else! No, just no. Picked up dog left in an emergency situation and the dog was bleeding. Gentleman didn't even care, nor was he alarmed, but after reading other reviews here, this is not an uncommon event. Apparently, these things (bloodied injuries) "just happen." No, no they do not! Never in 40 years have I picked up any animal from any overnight stay where they were injured. This dude didn't even care, nor did he even offer as much as a paper towel to help wipe the blood off the dog's face (which by the time we left was all over my hands, pants, and shirt). He mumbled something about the dog must have bit the cage. Just poor service and zero compassion and good luck getting them to answer their phone. :( ... And, btw ... I was not even the dog's owner! I was asked if I could help in lieu of the emergency situation by picking up the dog and transporting it to several counties away. This 'kennel' never even asked if I was the dog's owner! The name on the payment card did not even match that of the owners who had left the dog there! They gave her right to me; no questions asked! First time the dog and I had ever met! - Just beware ... not of the dog ... but of this establishment. Finally, you may want to engage your 4WD to reach this place if you choose to use their services. read more

My dog was bitten while boarding there. They tried to hit me with an enormous bill for treatment. He is a harmless old dog and the woman who called me said it wasn't his fault. He was attacked without provocation. They wanted $350 paid over the phone while I was away. They should be ashamed. Don't trust them. I wish there was a lower rating. read more

I recently moved to the area with my two dogs, and began looking for a new daycare for my younger dog who is a Staffy so she could have some social/play time with other dogs. I've been taking her weekly for a while and she loves it. I filled out an intake form online and spoke with the owner via email, he seemed friendly and excited and assured me he would be there the day I brought her in for the first day. When we arrive to the facility we were greeted by a 'dog trainer' who seemed to have no idea that we had a scheduled visit and didn't know when the owner would be back. I began asking questions about the facility, he explained the kennels to me and when I asked about the playgroups he commented that he wouldn't be putting her into a playgroup but leaving her in the kennel for the day and if I wanted her to have 'yard time' alone it would be extra. I told him I was there for her to have playtime not be kenneled, he said to me "Well I'm not just going to let her out with other dogs, the last thing I want to do today is call someone and tell them their dog got MAULED." I asked "Why would that happen..?" He replied "Well she's a pit bull so.." So I have a pit bull type dog so she's going to MAUL another dog?? I have witnessed breed discrimination but never experienced it myself. I was so taken off guard and surprised that a dog trainer at a facility I had a scheduled playgroup day at would say something like that. I told him "This is not what I expected coming here so I'm going to take my dog and go." I would not give business to this type of facility. read more

We love this place. They love the pups, give them extra attention and, sometimes, let a pup hang in 'the office' for a while. While we were away, we saw our dogs on a video on FB once which helped us. They seemed fine. We've been bringing our dogs here for something like 15 years, possibly more. We've been taking our dog reactive dog here for years. They're an hour away from our house and worth the trip. Their groomer does an amazing job clipping her nails (she also doesn't like that, she's a little high maintenance haha). I picked up my dog after a 4 day stay at Top Dog. She reeked of urine, and as soon as I got home I knew something was wrong. She had no appetite and was lethargic. I cooked chicken and rice in chicken broth and she couldn't keep what little of that she ate down. Then the diarrhea started. Worst I've ever seen in any dog. On the second day the diarrhea turned bloody. Then it was just blood and mucus. My poor girl nearly died from dehydration. I have another dog that lives in the same household, and wasn't boarded, and he's been fine. My veterinarian said given the circumstances, she suspected giardia or amebic dysentery from dirty water. I called Top Dog to ask if any other dogs were sick. The person I spoke with said one small dog that was kept in a different area had been sick. She said she would tell the owner and would have him call me. It's been 4 days and I haven't heard from him. Obviously he couldn't care less. If you love your pet, find some place else to board them! read more

Nick and all of the staff at Top Dog have been great with my dogs. As the owner of giant breeds it's not always easy to find people who are calm and able to handle them well. I have never hesitated to leave my dogs here and have also used their services for rescue dogs who are in the process of being transported to their forever homes. In May of 2021, my fiance and I brought our 5 month old pit bull there on our way to get married the next day in Gatlinburg. An hour and a half after we dropped her off and were on our way, Top Dog calls us to say that our dog escaped. We turn around and come back. We searched the woods and all around and couldn't find her. The worker there did not help at all and tried to say they had a team searching for her although he was the only one there. I had to cancel my wedding because my baby was gone. I put out an ad on Paw boost and as soon as I put on there that she was spayed all of a sudden a pit bull breeder up the road from the kennel called the kennel, not me and she had tags on her with my number on it to say they "found" my dog. I really believe this kennel tried to sell my puppy! Had I not put on there that she was spayed and could not be bred and she did have the little tattoo they put on dogs now to show they are spayed I do not believe I would have gotten her back. The only reason I couldn't sue them for the money, and emotional distress this caused is because my fiance, now husband, went insane and put the fear of God into that kennel! My wedding day was ruined because of this kennel. My puppy was completely scarred from the whole situation and to this day cannot be left at home alone or in her cage. This kennel is the worst and I would not recommend this hellhole to anyone!! read more

I've boarded my dog at Top Dog since 2009 and I remain guilt free about leaving her in a kennel because she is always delighted to stay there. She is well-cared for, gets activities and exercise and comes home in good style. Nick and the staff know my dog and that means a great deal. Great care and I trust them. read more

Our two dogs had a few stays at Top Dog in 2019 and 2020 without any issues. They stayed for 6 nights in December 2021 in a kennel together as they always do. The biggest issue was that one of our dogs was returned to us with an infected ear wound covered in crust and pus. The front base of his ear, obvious when looking at his face. The issue isn't that it happened- our other dog must've hooked a tooth or claw while playing- it's that we weren't notified. When asked about it, they said they just noticed it. They took $90 off of our bill; we took him straight to the vet who confirmed that this wound was at least a few days old and infected. The vet tended to the infection and prescribed antibiotics twice a day for 14 days. The vet bill was $115. We will not be taking our dogs back to Top Dog. Cheap, but less attentive care than other places. Their toys and beds were also ruined with urine which is not normal for our dogs. read more

The facility was clean, plenty of room to run and play and the gentlemen working the front counter had made friends with my snobby dog. As always, I am wowed and thankful for the staff at TDK! They give my dog the exercise, play, and attention she is accustomed to when I am out of town. Today I called on short notice to ask to have my pup boarded over the weekend. I am only worried that with as happy as she was with her stay last time that I won't be able to drag her back home when vacation is over. I took my dog several times and loved it at first. It was clean and had a separate area for older dogs. The last time I picked her up after 9am on a Saturday her bed was wet. When I walked her to the car she peed for the longest time I have ever seen. This told me she was not taken out that morning and had been wetting her bed. Someone was there grooming but apparently the expected them to use the doggie door and go outside on the concrete which my dog would not want to do. I was never told she would not be taken to the bathroom couple times per day. It must be an added charge to get to go in the grass! I'm done. read more

They arranged for us to bring our dogs by on the morning of our trip and failed to show up. We were left without care for our dogs at the last minute. If a friend had not stepped up we would have been out the cost of 2 plane tickets and vacation time. I will not be back, would not recommend this kennel. read more

After trying several boarding facilities in the Asheville area, we found Top Dog Kennel. Nick and his staff have been wonderful with Bella and Audry. We have them groomed there also. We have been pleased with both the grooming and the boarding. When our babies arrive, they go in willingly and come home happy. Top Dog is now our kennel of choice. We highly recommend it. read more

We keep our dog here when we go out of town. The location is nice from both our dog's perspective and ours.. The yard she can run in is shaded and sufficient to jump around and play in and for us it's not out of the way. We really appreciate the way photos / videos are posted from their play time while we're away - very reassuring to see a wagging tail and lolling tongue smiling through the camera at you. This time we called 10 minutes ahead and they had our dog waiting and ready for us - great touch!! read more
