I'm visiting from out of country and Planet Fitness happens to be in a convenient location. I have…read morea family member with a membership who has been able to extend her gym privileges to me. I used to be a member myself before moving a way and see some big differences at this specific location. Walking through the entrance I was greeted as soon as my foot passed the threshold. Nice and professional staff awaited behind the desk to get us checked in. I thought giving my phone number for the log in was going to be a bit tricky since it's a rather long number (like I said, I live in another country) but he was quick and clever and figured out a solution without having to take a long moment of deny me. I appreciated this. Final note on staff - They're always so friendly and kind each time that I have been here. Focusing on the machines, I always feel very disappointed that Planet Fitness does not have true squat rack and substitutes the Smith machine (like training wheels for squats) so I had to get crafty and steal a bar from the bench press to do deadlifts. Probably not allowed but it's a statement in itself. (I set it down with grace and consideration, mind you). Otherwise, there is plenty to get in a fantastic workout and from what I saw, the people around me did exercise proper gym etiquette and wiped down their machines when they were done. I like this location specifically and I give it the stamp of approval, two thumbs up, and whatever else has a similar saying.

The idea is to work a machine or exercise when the light is green and stop and move to the next station when the light is red. You start at a station and follow the order. But some inconsiderate people stay on one machine, resting and taking selfies for long periods. Then there are the ones that don't go in order. They jump around and do not follow the green and red lights. When I told the staff my concerns, they told me the sign that describes how to use the area is only a suggestion. Basically, people can do whatever they want in that area. So why have that area? The staff member was unable to answer logically. When the 30 Minute Express area was in the back of the gym, a staff member was stationed there during busy hours to answer questions and deter misuse of the area. Now, there are three or four staff members at the front desk chit-chatting away during busy hours. Perhaps Planet Fitness's motto should be the free-for-all zone instead of the Judgment free zone. On a positive note, the gym is immaculate!

Mega points for being reasonably priced for a couple and having three pools: one indoor and two…read moreoutdoor (one of the outdoor pools is for the kiddos). The indoor pool is on the small side, but it's also (as far as I know) the only indoor pool that doesn't require an apartment lease or hotel room booking within the city of Albany, which makes it the biggest indoor pool in town. The gym facilities also look pretty extensive, but I haven't actually come for the gym yet -- I'm in it for the swimming. The staff I've interacted with have been universally nice and helpful. My biggest complaint would be that the indoor pool closes so early, I assume for staffing reasons. Also, keep in mind that they require you to reserve your lane ahead of time for the indoor pool. I like the policy, since it saves you from going to the gym, getting changed and showering only to realize that there are no free lanes, but if you like to be more spontaneous about your workouts the JCC pool might not be for you.

Hello Albany JCC, it's nice to meet you…read more My kid is taking swimming lessons at the pool here. What is nice is that they let you try this out for one session without becoming members. There are a heck of a lot of services and activities associated with the JCC. The largest would seem to be the nursery school, the gym and the pool. If you had a nursery school aged kid, and enjoyed to lift weights and swim for some good low impact cardio, you would probably never leave this place. But that's just not me.
