When…read moreI called to schedule the lessons I was also told that I could fly with my boyfriend, which I thought was a great deal. The day that we were supposed to fly Premier Flight Academy called and stated it was canceled due to weather. This wasn't a big deal because it was rainy and very cloudy. Moreover, I was able to reschedule the next day. The day of the lessons we arrived at Premier Flight Academy earlier than our scheduled time to fill out the necessary paperwork. When we arrived we were not greeted by anyone so we walked around Berk Lakefront Airport. After looking at all of the exhibits we struck up a conversation with a guy who was waiting to fly. He told us that he had been waiting for a very long time and the guy was running late. Approximately 30 minutes after we arrived we spoke to the flight instructor and he confirmed that he was running behind. He then asked if we could come back 45 minutes later. We agreed and went to lunch. When we came back the flight instructor was nowhere to be found. We waited one hour before we saw him because he was still giving lessons. After he was finished with the lesson he told other Premier Flight Academy employees that there was something wrong with the plane. He asked us to sign waivers and he redeemed my Groupon. He then told us we had to wait longer because there was something wrong with the plane. We reluctantly agreed and waited another 30 minutes until he told us it was time for our lesson. When we were walking out to the plane he guided us in front of a plane that was about to take off. Another Premier Flight Academy employee noticed and said take them behind the plane. This should have been a red flag that the instructor did not know what he was doing. Walking in front of moving propellers is never a good idea. When we arrived at the plane the instructor gave a description of everything and he taught us how to do a plane inspection. The plane overview and inspection took about 15 minutes. He then said it was time for us fly. He instructed my boyfriend to turn on the plane and start it up, however, nothing happened. My boyfriend tried this over and over until the flight instructor said I need to have someone look at it again. He went to find someone and told us he would be right back. While we were waiting for him to find someone my boyfriend and I decided everything that happened was a sign that we shouldn't fly the plane. We were also very worried that if the instructor could not start a plane he would not be able to handle a problem if it occurred during the flight. We left the plane and told the instructor we were no longer interested in flying. He asked us if we were sure and we responded yes. He then said we could fly another plane but we would have to pay for it. I couldn't believe that he said that considering, it took over 3 hours past our scheduled appointment to fly. My boyfriend quickly responded no and asked for a refund. The instructor stated that since the Groupon was redeemed he couldn't give us the money back. He then stated he would call someone and get back to me before he left for the day. He never called me that night. The following day I called him about the refund and he said "oh that's right I forgot. I called someone this morning but they didn't answer. I'll call them again and get back to you." After his response, I thought to myself if you forgot the likelihood of you calling someone that morning is slim to none, which means you're lying. I never heard back from him so I called Groupon for a refund and explained the situation. DON'T TAKE FLIGHT LESSONS AT THIS PLACE! If I could rate them 0 out of 5 I would.

I booked a rental checkout and subsequent rental, and ultimately was no-showed by my CFI and received zero communication from the club. Weather impacted my initial checkout date, and I was able to reschedule with another CFI, but this was all done via text to CFIs without any central coordination from an office or flight desk. My CFI did not show up during our assigned checkout time, completely wasting what little time I had visiting Cleveland.

It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a country with a great group of people at a very reasonable cost (because if you are exploring a new country, who better to go with than people who literally flew around the world?!). Both instructors and members of the club went as well as non-pilot friends. General Aviation flying is a truly wonderful experience. Aviation was always a love and interest of mine and from the start I noticed that both the instructors and the pilots they trained are calm, confident, and very knowledgeable about aviation. I had so many questions and everyone was more than happy to share their knowledge, and the club members let me sit up front in the right seat on the way back so I could learn even more first hand! When I found myself in Cleveland again this summer, I took my first flight lesson with Corey. He quickly assessed where I was, explained what we would be doing in the air and we took off! He explained all the maneuvers very clearly and took me through practical exercises to demonstrate the concepts in flight (What happens if you make a turn only using the rudder? What happens if you cut the engine?). His instruction was so good that I wound up controlling the plane for the whole lesson with Corey making adjustments only when necessary. It is still somewhat surreal when I recall that I flew and landed an airplane! Learning to fly with T&G allows you to learn serious skills in a friendly and unintimidating atmosphere. I agree with one of the previous customers -- it's a bit pricey for a 20 minute ride. The interior of the helicopter left something to be desired. The seats WERE NOT Luxurious. It was advertised as a romantic 23 mile flight. It sort of felt like we were riding in a Ford Kcar and definitely not a Mercedes or Cadillac of helicopters. A glass of $6.00 champagne was OK but hardly a romantic getaway. I was actually expecting a box of chocolates or even a red rose in the cockpit. Or even a pilot in a white captain's outfit. The pilot pointed out a couple of obvious landmarks. I assume if you are not from Cleveland his narration may have been a little bit more valuable. When we were back safely on ground, my wife pointed out the the pilot was looking at his smart phone in one hand while flying the helicopter with the other. Yes, that's unsettling. Again, it made for nice experience. Unless they come up with some additional amenities I personally believe that this will be a one time only experience with this company.

When I called to get information and to schedule the lesson, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information I was given. The woman asked about my son's height and weight to determine the plane he would be assigned. Being tall and thin, she told me he would fly a Warrior, which is a low-wing plane. She told me the fuel and taxes were an additional $44 and an additional rider would be $30- can't go wrong with either! She told me that if he was interested in getting his license he should have an FAA log book. So, I bought him one for his 17th birthday and told him he was going to fly the following morning. Hey couldn't believe it! We arrived at our scheduled time and met his pilot, Josh, who is a recent graduate from Kent State. He asked if I would be flying with them and I said I hadn't planned on it. My son, however, wanted me to and what mom would pass on that?! We flew over West Branch and the surrounding area- all the while getting continuous, in-dept flight instruction and information. I sat behind the two of them taking pictures with a happy heart. Josh provided my son with so much instruction that impressed us both. He treated us with so much respect and professionalism that would impress anyone. After the flight, Josh made the first entry in my son's log book, which was so cool! This was such a fantastic experience from beginning to end. I hope to return and highly recommend American Winds to anyone interested in becoming a pilot.
