I have been a patient of Dr. Chen's for years for neck pain and spasticity. Dr. Chen cares and has unquestionably helped me with my pain. He spends plenty of time with you, and involves you in decisions about your care. He remembers things like whether you're sensitive to drugs, when other doctors have dismissed side effects that I've experienced. He has occasionally stepped in to help me with migraine meds when my neurologist was MIA. I have recommended him to multiple people. The billing practice here is to contact you shortly before an appointment and tell you that there's a balance due, and you need to pay it before your appointment. It was enforced in an overzealous way that was difficult to not take personally. My husband spoke to the doctor about a year ago and came to an agreement that billing inquiries would be directed to my husband rather than to me. I was recently contacted about a balance and I gave them my husband's contact information. They refused to contact him and called and emailed me again until we spoke with the doctor. I am giving a five star rating because Dr. Chen apologized and asked that we forward the offending emails to him. He assured us that he would speak to the appropriate people and take care of the problem. The billing manager has also apologized and agreed to not to contact me. I am hoping that we can put this behind us and focus on my care. read more

I am do not know why others have had bad experiences with Dr. Chen, I've always found him to be highly skilled and professional at all times. He saved my life and I do mean that quite literally, I was on the brink of taking my own life because I couldn't live with the pain anymore. He suggested an Intrathecal Pain Pump, to which I agreed to do, he did the surgery and implanted it perfectly, I hardly notice the thing ever except for refill days and when I need to give myself a little extra medicine. PLEASE do yourself a big favor, save time & money by seeing ANOTHER doctor. Very arrogant, rude, and condescending. Would ask me a question and cut me off before I could answer completely. He told me how I felt. Wasn't he there to listen to how I felt? No compassion at all. He asked me what injections I needed. Isn't he supposed to tell me that? First of all when i walk into the facility no one was there. I called out several times is someone here? Then a lady came out and i said my Dr. Sanders sent me here too see if this Dr could help me. He came up behind the desk and i explained what was going on and informed him that right now i take pain killers. (Oppiates) at that time he said i can't help you and i walked out. Then i get a bill where my insurance paid $96.99 and i owe $24.25. For what he did nothing whatsoever for me and i have to pay? Horrible experience would absolutely not recommend you go here. The doctor and the staff absolutely do not listen to anything you say. Went in for a cortisone shot for inflammation and mentioned last time I had greater pain relief from the shot in my shoulder than my neck. Comment was ignored and only received a shot in the neck. Went back a week later in worse pain than before the shot. Said I need a shot in the shoulder that's the nerve that hurts, again he said no the neck must need it in a different place. This time the pain was worse yet and had a bulge on the back of the neck for weeks. Went to someone else one shot in the shoulder no pain or complications problem solved. After all that they send me to collections because I didn't pay the $40 office visit the second time. They only care about your insurance and money not the patient. read more

The only reason I'm giving two stars is the doctor actually helped my husband. However, dealing with the billing department of this center has been a complete nightmare. I rarely write reviews, but I feel so strongly about this one that I am writing a review. I have been going back-and-forth 2021 with top pain because they are saying I owe more than I think we do and I've been asking them to show me a substantiated bill that shows how they're coming to the amount due. No one in that office has been able to do that. I basically have someone nicely say they'll take care of it and look into it and then six months later, they'll send me another bill. The first person I spoke to back in 2021 was just downright rude, I believe she might be gone now because I have never heard from her since. Now the person at the front desk is very sweet and seems like she wants to help but then I never hear anything and another six months later I get a bill. I'm hoping the doctor sees these reviews and understands that his billing practices are costing him business because I see this kind of complaint in other reviews of Top Pain. It's unfortunate when a doctor is good at his office and billing practices are not run well. read more

I was very pleased with my experience as far as the doctor's progressive approach to come up with a plan to manage my lower back pain through various injections. However, their approach to billing and cost disclosures is a practice I am not familiar with nor according to Illinois Dept of Insurance is legitimate. The office/billing staff was incredibly unprofessional, they used confrontational language as if to engage in an argument, and refused to provide a detailed explanation of cost of services. They referred me to contact my insurance provider for information regarding services rendered, and in doing so, I found out they had submitted several claims for services outside of the scope in which they provide or that were not provided at all. I am disappointed that the office staff shows little empathy for patients, and they treated me like a degenerate. I'm a woman in my early 40's with lower back pain due to degenerative disc disease most likely caused by having pregnancies so close together. I've never taken any type of pain medication for this outside of NSAIDs or Tylenol and only sought injections from this office because they are 5 mins from my home. I will gladly revisit the team at Duly even if my previous doctor is over an hour away (my only reason for going to TOP was to circumvent the long car ride as it causes discomfort to my spine) because they offer a professional environment, friendly staff and aren't attempting to commit insurance fraud. It is also worth noting that anyone receiving any type of spinal injections should be monitored for a period of time afterwards and should avoid driving if possible. You also may want to be prepared that your injections will be performed at TOP while you are in your street clothes, in my case, my pants pulled roughly down to exposing my buttocks. There were no X-rays or scans actually performed on me for new patient purposes. My previous treatments were over a year old but available in Epic, however being a new patient should require new imaging being performed as it would from any other major healthcare provider. You also might be surprised that the front end office is very different from the patient rooms or the one room in the back that all procedures are performed in. If you can and your insurance allows, I have a PPO, seek treatment elsewhere where you're given the time and attention deserved for your health and well-being, not here, where you're used for an insurance check and treated as if you are nothing more than another body being tossed on a table. read more

Doctor Chen and his staff have succeeded in doing something no other doctor has done in 7 years and that is get me off my opioids , 2 back surgeries and countless procedures led to a 4 pill a day habit , he put in a nerve stimulator and it is working great on the pain . When I called to make my initial appointment with Dr. Chen I made it very clear I was switching doctors. I am currently seeing a doctor at a large university hospital but it is 41 miles from my house. I wanted someone closer. Dr Chen is 8.8 miles from my home. After talking with Dr Chen, he told me he does not take over from other doctors and will not prescribe medication from other doctors. While I was questioning him about why I was not told this before I made an appointment, Dr. Chen became very belligerent, condescending, arrogant and stormed out of the room. Dr. Chen was able to see me very quickly after I had an MRI on my neck. He recognized the pain I was experiencing and scheduled me right away for an injection. The relief was immediate and considerable. I was in constant, excruciating pain, and within two weeks of our first visit was in no pain. I highly recommend him! read more
