Shop has been completely redone and reworked. Looks amazing. Very laid back atmosphere...these guys love what they do and they love to be at the shop. Had a piece done by Tommy H and although some of it wrapped around close to the armpit, he worked quickly to minimize pain and discomfort. Very satisfied. From looking at the gallery and portfolios it looks like these guys specialize in traditional American style tattooing and it looks amazing. I even think Mike was featured in one of the magazines for that. But if you look at the instagram for the shop you'll see they do a lot of other styles. Seems to be very well rounded. If you don't have many tattoos, or don't look like the typical "dude bro" with "edgy tattoos" on your face or hands, don't bother going here. They were rude, and seemed so disinterested in making sure you knew what you wanted. They weren't helpful at ALL with suggesting anything, and I asked to see something a little different and they rolled their eyes. It was like dealing with a bunch of teenagers who work at McDonald's and hate their jobs. If you're so disinterested and don't care about your customers, why bother tattooing at all? read more

Jamie gave me my first-ever tattoo. I called to see if I could come in and get some ink done and left with my whole upper-right arm covered the same day. I brought in a basic outline of what I wanted and Jamie re-drew it and made a lot of improvisations--very knowledgeable when it comes to tattooing. Top Shelf has very professional and accommodating artists who can hold a good conversation with you for hours. My tattoo took roughly four hours to complete, and throughout the whole session, Jamie asked every now-and-then how I was feeling, being that it was my first time getting inked up. Got my first tattoo done here by Jamie in June of 2010. I was so nervous, but he was very reassuring and helped me feel more comfortable. My small tattoo took no more than 10 minutes, but when I sat up I almost passed out. He gave me a red bull and let me rest until I felt better. I couldn't have asked for a better first experience. This is a nice clean shop in bayside. In terms of type of tattoo I think this may be a better place to go if your looking for a traditional tattoo. Very dark, sharp lines, and great work. I got a great tattoo from one of the tattooers here, however its alot darker and in your face than I had wanted. So if your looking to come here, definitely check the artists work out before hand and make sure its the style your looking for. I came here for my first tattoo which came out nice, so I decided to go back, I called them at 3pm and ask if anyone was available to do a tattoo at 7 the person said yeah, so I go there around 6:30pm and the shop was closed. Well I can say that Top shelf tattoo is by far one of the best shops around. The staff is knowledgeable and very welcoming the artists are true professionals. I went there about 3 years ago and I wanted to get the inside of my lip tattooed. I understood that those tattoos weren't so permanent but almost all of my ink disappeared after i brushed my teeth.. and I followed all the instructions I was given. I paid $100 for it!! and usually in other tattoo shops charge less and they do free touchups and these guys wouldn't budge. They overpriced me for sure and weren't even nice enough to do a touch-up.. especially since I put in another $150 deposit for another tattoo. I was so angry, I didn't even go back and get my money... they didn't even contact me and ask why I haven't returned.. just kept silent. Two of my other friends got their tattoos there and were very disappointed as well. I was there when one of them got their's done and the tattoo artist was having a whole conversation with another guy throughout the entire process as if doing it with half as much care. I had gotten a tattoo here about a year ago and the professionalism was amazing. I got my septum pierced today for the second attempt there. Another shop screwed it up and their piercer was happy to fix it. It ended up rejecting and after waiting 2 weeks it was repierced again. It's absolutely perfect. Vin is an amazing piercer, he spent SO much time with me discussing what I wanted and what was possible and all of my concerns. I believe they all have certificates in blood borne pathogens and will always show you everything coming out of a new package. I have other tattoos and piercings, but never have I encountered a shop like this. Not only are they all highly skilled but they are all very sweet and friendly people. I highly recommend them. They are on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for, and when it comes to tattoos and piercings, these things are on and in my body. The price is worth it. read more

I really did not have a great experience here. This was my first tattoo, so naturally I was a little nervous when I entered the shop. The tattoo ended up looking decent, but the men who work there were extremely unfocused, rude, and immature. They did not reassure me about having no need to worry, nor did they seem to care. I had gotten 2 tattoos done here and was with my friend when she got one. The staff was pretty friendly considering I am a younger customer. My first tattoo was a simple quote that Tommy (they call him "Tall Tommy") did. It came out perfect and just as I had hoped. I loved it so much I came back for a second. Tommy had done my second one as well and i was equally as happy. When my friend was looking into getting her first tattoo, I instantly recommended Topshelf. We walked in and they were able to squeeze her in. All 3 of my visits were not scheduled and strictly walk-ins, however they were kind enough to get it done. The owner, Mike, did my friend's tattoo and was so thorough about everything. He squeezed us in, completely drew out her tattoo and got it done in the same day. What surprised me the most was that he touched up my tattoo for free, no hesitation. (I was told by a different Tommy (he sounds like he could not have cared less about anything) that only the artist that did my tattoo was only able to touch it up, and refused me, twice.) I just got back from getting my tattoo a few hours ago and Jamie was great! The whole staff was awesome, actually. I got writing down my right side and it came out much better after Jamie's edits :) He works super fast and they are very accommodating. I pulled up the font from the internet and they printed it and drew up two sketches for me, the first one being the way that I initially wanted it, the second being Jamie's revisions. Horrible work. I have gone to many places that do tattoos and they by far are the least talented. They are money hungry wannabes. I went to get a simple cartoon strawberry and they fucked it up. It doesn't even look like a strawberry, it looks like a radish. I now had to waste 80$ for something that I have to go pay another artist to fix. Thanks for nothing. This is for every artist who works there. I went in with me and my boyfriend we both got tatted by two different artists and both do garbage work. My boyfriends leg was swollen from a ruptured blood vessel not even on the tattooed area, but right next to it. Careless, sloppy, in professional work. read more
