I fell in love with this place immediately upon entry. I already knew I loved actual Topeca coffee, but I hadn't been into one of their shops. I came in the first time in the afternoon, it was quiet, a few people studying, chit chatting and I spotted a cozy couch. I ordered a mocha and took it to my eyed couch. Little did I know this would be one of the best mochas I had ever consumed, HANDS DOWN. I am from Seattle and can be somewhat of a coffee snob (beer too, duh) and I also travel a lot and am sure to try local coffee whenever possible when on the road. I will note that they also have a lot of yummy pastries and even get quiches in if you come in the morning which I try and do whenever possible. They make breakfast sandwiches too, etc. Even if you are in need of a new french press or other coffee making device, they've got those available here as well as Chemex. ;) If Topeca is new to you, then it wouldn't be a waste of time or energy to look them up and see what they are all about. They are small, no middle man, and have everything shipped directly to Tulsa from their El Salvadorian farms. I know you think I'm crazy, but please trust your instincts and my review and go ahead and get the cinnamon roll. The cream cheese icing is perfect, the cinnamon: sugar: dough ratio is just right, and it will take care of your sweet tooth and your hunger for a good long time. You could eat ten scones, or you could just eat this one delicious cinnamon roll. The coffee is excellent, the staff is spot-on, the location can't be beat. It's a prime spot for an early morning coffee, a long and leisurely mid-morning coffee meeting, or, it turns out, a lunch menu of surprising variety, which I look forward to trying! read more

I knew I was facing disappointment if her answer was, "no," but I knew I had to ask the barista if there was a way I could bring a piece of Topeca home with me to Fort Worth. Luckily her co-worker was restocking at that moment the bags of freshly-roasted beans that I eagerly purchased. No kidding, the beans were roasted only a few days before my purchase of them. Find THAT at Starbucks! I'm a fellow who is hard to impress, but when strolling around downtown Tulsa one day while passing through town, I found Topeca coffee and struck gold. Sitting at the street-level of some architectural gems, Topeca is not only the shop but also the owners of the plantation on which their beans are grown. The place has an open feel that invites one to come in and roam on the internet or chat with friends. I don't know what I enjoyed more in Tulsa; the lovely examples of art deco architecture or this coffee shop. It's the day after a wedding, I'm tired and I have a flight in 2 hours. First thing on my to-do list? COFFEE. I needed some noms and caffeine to get me going, so I headed down into the lobby of our hotel where Topeca is. I got a SF vanilla soy latte (I'm high maintenance, deal with it) and I got my husband a regular black coffee. Both were tasty, hot and ready in a snap. I hereby pledge my undying love for Topeca! I love the seed-to-cup concept, meaning the family who owns the shop owns the plantation in El Salvador where the beans are grown too. There is something oddly romantic about being involved at every step of the process. The espresso has a smooth texture and a hint of fruitiness to it that's really pleasant. The coffee is bold and rich and delicious. The one drawback is the lack of diversity that a seed-to-cup process inevitably imposes. Regionally, Central American beans usually make for a cup of coffee that is light or medium bodied and slightly acidic, which is good stuff, but can't really offer the earthiness of something like an Ethiopian or Indonesian. I'll still come to Topeca almost exclusively, but times that I'm craving some variety I'll have to look elsewhere. read more

Topeca is the only "seed to cup" coffee shop in the United States, which sounds fairly impressive initially...and it is, sort of. "Seed to cup" simply means that the family that owns the shop also owns the plantation where the beans are grown. This is pretty cool in the sense that the family is dedicated to sourcing. It also probably means that they look out for the laborers on their farms and have a vested interest in the host country. In terms of coffee, however, there is a reason why no one has ever done this before. Simply put, a roaster often uses beans from different plantations to craft unique flavored roasts. Beans sourced from the same locale have a tendency to all taste more or less the same. It is the same thing as with wine, basically. In wine, people talk about the "terroir" or earth. Different locales offer up different flavors in a coffee bean or a grape. It is an interesting experiment, but one that goes against common sense. Topeca's coffees are, truth be told, pretty darn good. They tend to hit one or two flavor notes really, really well, though sometimes lacking in complexity. As for the experience of going to Topeca, that doesn't really matter so much to me. The food is good and the staff is capable...the coffee is great. read more

This place was great! They have really interesting and eccentric flavors like Mexican chilie (it has a little kick!), sarsaparilla, toasted caramel, lavender, and more. The whole own the farm, harvest the beans, roast the coffee, brew the cup business is interesting. And if that's what gets you into this place, fine. But that's not why this place gets 5 stars. Consistently good coffee, a variety of milk offerings (i.e. almond milk), made to order crepes and paninis, and homemade baked goods are the reasons I keep driving back to this place whenever I'm in Tulsa. read more

Coming from Orlando, FL (the beautiful, touristy, franchise capital of the world), I was not looking forward to waking up with Starbucks while visiting my boyfriend in Tulsa. We checked out Urban Spoon and found this little joint called Topeca Coffee in downtown Tulsa which had fantastic reviews. Super excited, we went there and truly experienced the most velvety, smooth, rich coffee I think I've ever tasted! The "see to cup" process really makes the coffee flavor unique and gives the baristas a sense of pride. The atmosphere wasn't anything special, in light of it being a downtown coffee shop, but they had a cheap version of "jenga" which my boyfriend and I enjoyed playing after devouring a scrumptious, giant cinnamon roll and egg sammie. Overall, probably the best coffee east of Seattle (I wouldn't know, never been) and a great example of local culture and pride. Would definitely go back and would LOVE to see one open here in Orlando. PS - They sell the coffee in Whole Foods Markets too! : ) read more

This is a great coffee shop in downtown Tulsa. The most amazing part is they own the plantation in El Salvador. The beans are fresh and roasted here in town. You can even buy bagged beans and grounds. Their drinks are so rich and flavorful, they put the homogeneous offering of the chain shops to shame. They offer all the standard coffee shop fare and add tasty cafe lunches. I'm generally a "just coffee" drinker and am never disappointed in what I get but have also been willing to expand into other drinks and they are wonderfully done. I have spent years complaining that downtown needed a really good coffee shop and now there is one. So if you are in downtown Tulsa and need a better cup of joe than your office coffee pot offers, then go to Topeca. read more

Come here for the crepes! Giant & delish they can be split by 2 people easily. The cinnamon buns are also really good. Skip the paninis! The veggies on the inside of my panini weren't even warm and the crepes are so much more flavorful. This is definitely not your typical coffee place, it's very classy makes sense since it's located next to the Mayo Hotel. The place is not spacious, but they make used of the space. I love their marble tables and leather seats. I wouldn't say this is a place to study but more of a place to get ur coffee and chat with friends. Service was really welcoming. I wanted to try their lattes but with flavor it would been close to $6 so I had their cold brew with hazelnut syrup since they ran out of vanilla. It's only 2.50 (including tax) for a small. I ordered a medium but they gave and charge me for a small... but their small is about the same size as a grande at Starbucks. But it wasn't that flavorful since I couldn't taste the hazelnut. They also have sandwiches and desserts to pair with ur coffee. If you're going to try this place for the first time, make sure you have quarters for the meter parking across the street. read more

If you're staying at The Mayo (which is pretty damn awesome BTW) or working downtown, Topeca Coffee is a good stop. But, it won't be my go-to here in T-Town. This is the best coffee I've had in Tulsa. I ordered and iced coffee with milk, but the barista either didn't hear me forgot the milk. I took a sup and rather than complain I was thankful. I've never had coffee that tasted so great. It's got a nice atmosphere and decor. I'm definitely planning on coming back again. Sometimes you happen upon these places with little insight or intention, but walk away feeling like you should have know for years about its hidden greatness. That's how felt after visiting Topeca on a recent business trip to Tulsa... The Coffee: single origin, family owned farm in South America. This makes for one hellova controlled cup of coffee. The downside is that you limit your coffee to just that - one farm. Great idea the outside, complex on the inside. However, the coffee is EXCELLENT! I only had one cup of their daily brew, but enjoyed about 4 capaccinos in one visit! Hands down, the best cappaccino I've ever had. Esppresso: rich, flavorful, dark, and complex; Milk: steamed to perfection with just the right amount of foam. I tell you, simply the best cappuccino(s) ever. I liked them so much I decided to buy a bag of their espresso to enjoy at the machine at work (which was also amazing). The establishment is also very nice; modern and contemporary with a touch of nostalgia. I appreciate the decor a lot, especially the coffee bean table tops. I was looking forward to trying a local coffee joint while in town for business. I ordered the french press coffee and a bowl of homemade granola with yogurt. The granola was AMAZING, and was the perfect breakfast item. My french press was smooth, but not the greatest coffee I've had. However, this is definitely a great option for your morning java. Topeca is wonderful. The people are welcoming, the space is convenient to my work, the coffee is exceptional, and the cookies are the perfect afternoon pick me up. I love that they are a locally roasted coffee house--insert plug to support local coffee shops! They do not offer a large food selection for a meal, however they offer great snacks. Like I mentioned you cannot go wrong with any of their cookies--give the pistachio one a try it is surprisingly good. I have also had the muffins, yogurt and quiche, however, I have yet to try one of the mouth watering cinnamon rolls. read more

Tulsa is blessed to have two well known coffee roasters. (There are more I'm sure please forgive me if I forgot someone).-For this I rejoice. I consider myself to be serious about coffee and it's quality. Topeca was recommended to me by some serious coffee people. I made a special note to go enjoy this Tulsa hotspot. When I arrived the baristas were kind and but didn't seem to know much about the coffee selection. This I understand is not the norm for Topeca so that was easy to look past. I will tell you the coffee was enjoyable. Definitely one of the top coffees I have had in Tulsa, OK. High quality pour over experience. As far as Tulsa this place is the best in my opinion. Their seed to cup approach makes them unique but they also offer single origin selections from other areas. The prices are reasonable for what they are offering and while they pay attention to detail, it isn't snooty like some pour over shops can be. On cappuccinos the microfoam is pretty good, though I've had better in other cities. Overall, if you're in Tulsa, this is the place to go for coffee. read more

The main reason I stayed at the Mayo, was to have good coffee in proximity. Crazy? Yes. But that's how much I love/need a quality cup of coffee to make the days bright. I'm pretty snobbish/spoiled when it comes to crafted coffee (sorrynotsorry). The almond milk latte was very well crafted, balanced, and delicious. For Tulsa, a great choice. I am a serious coffee snob, I know too much, and in any city I am in I seek out the specialty coffee. I try to be nice to my baristas unless the espresso is truly abominable and the spot should know better. Well, wasn't expecting much when I went to a hotel coffee bar (even though I probably should have known better) but had my socks totally blown off by my first shot of espresso from Topeca Coffee. Nearly four years later, and Topeca has never disappointed. Eat here on a weekly basis, and really love the curry chicken salad. They will put it on a croissant if you prefer. I had some coffee questions and I believe it was the owner that took me through the process of making an espresso and recommending a great grinder.
