Great gym for beginner to veteran boxers I joined this gym in November after doing some online research and doing a drop in class. I highly recommend if you were on the fence on whether to join or not to use the drop in opportunity that this gym offers . I was looking for a great way to get a work out, meet people, and potentially train to spar and fight . What really blew me away is the attention that the coaches give you despite being in a group setting. Additionally, the culture in the gym is very supportive, everyone is looking to help each other to get better and gives you grace when just starting out to learn. Be aware that training sessions are only a few times a day, space is limited and you have to reserve your spot online. But this is not a huge burden and I always get the slot. Looks can be deceiving at first, unfortunately the gym matches the attitude of some of the "employees" there. I first called and left a voicemail, wanting to set up a meeting with a coach (no response returned). I arrived the following day, and walk in and see the front desk are already working with people, so I start to walk around and take look at the gym. Only one coach was personable, and redirected me to the front. I get back and it's two guys flirting with the pretty girl. Ok, I waited a bit while they finished. They saw me sit on the bench and wait. Once the young lady they turned and left, the "employees" turned their back and continued to have their own conversation. So moral of the story is not everyone will be greeted equally, approached equally or otherwise serviced equally at this establishment. I've been coming to this gym for about 2 years now. Although I'm not as habitual as I'd like, and often find myself embarrassed at how long it's been, when I go through that door each time it feels like I never left. The warmest and most welcoming family keeps this gym warm in the winter. Joaquin, the owner and main coach of the club, instilled a comfort and confidence in me in the first ten minutes of my first class that I am forever beholden for. This gym came into my life, as I'm sure many other tales are the same, amidst the many hurdles life throws you. I consider myself very lucky to have been recommended this lab of the sweet science. I see the smiles on the kids during the kids boxing that makes me think there couldn't be a better place for them after school. Jealous that I didn't have something like it in my youth. I see the parents watching with pride and sharing with all of the other parents around. The sense of community is overwhelming, in a time when the word "community" seems to hold less and less value as our city grows. I've seen young men and women start out with me. Learning how to wrap hands together, catching mitts, and counting throws. Working out tough combinations together and sharing in a sweet agony of bodies growing stronger through hard work. I've seen them grow far past me, in skills as boxers and as assets to everyone around them as better people. But not once, not give me a warm greeting or a reassuring nod as I unwrap after a level one class as they stretch for and advance class. My whole life I've been an outlier. I didn't actually get to experience this gym, though I was excited to. I emailed them directly to ask a few newbie questions and sign up for a class. They responded with, "The class you're interested in is full," but didn't answer any of my questions or tell me which (if any) other classes were available. I responded to ask if I could sign up for another, then again asked the questions I had: What should I bring? What do classes cost? Any other way I can prepare? This time, I got no response at all. I've always been interested in the art of boxing. As a new mother with a career, finally making the space to do so was liberating. I chose this gym because it seemed small and intimate. What drives a woman to learn how to artfully protect herself is something heavy, often more than one something. It's unfortunate that the response to my vulnerability was: we don't have space for you, and don't have time to answer your questions. This may be as a result of the overcapacity that is now Denver, however to me this just seems like bad business. Serve the people you can serve well, and if you don't have the capacity to accomodate more, then clearly state that on your website so people don't waste their time. This was the best boxing gym I've ever been to. Joaquim was a great teacher , but I mostly worked with Louis. Louis was awesome , patient, funny, always had great motivational music and just made the hour fly..don't get me wrong it was hard as hell but it was the best workout hour of the day. This place is amazing and I'm a better person because of it! I've been going to this gym since Feb 2019 and I've lost weight, gained some much need confidence, and have fallen in love with the sport of boxing all over again. Coach Joaquin, Phil, and Luis actually care about you as an individual first which I really appreciate. There is no ego here and you're training with people who've competed and won in the golden gloves and other boxing competitions. I know this might sound a little cliche but this place is more than a gym. It's a community of people who all just want to get better and make the community better. I've been training at Topeira for about a year and would strongly encourage anyone who is interested in learning a new sport, while getting into amazing shape, to check this place out! Classes usually consist of a few rounds of warm up, 5 or 6 rounds on a heavy bag, core strengthening exercises, and finally a few rounds of mitt work. Joaquin is a stellar coach, and leads and directs the classes while jamming to a mix of upbeat music. You will learn how to throw a punch, but you will also learn proper technique, footwork, defense, combinations, etc., all while improving your cardio. Topeira also has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, but the look and feel of a real boxing gym complete with speed bags, double end bags and a full size ring. One of the wackest gyms I've walked into period. It wasn't even the space. That was adequate at best though. I've trained in dusty gyms in New England that had more room, more bags and just all around a better community. The owner is standoffish and arrogant... Like bruh unless you got belts or golden gloves or are cranking out champions... miss me with that especially if I'm potentially a paying customer. He makes EVERYBODY start at level 1 for 3 months even though I have been training for a year in the fight talent capital of America- southern California as well as some degree of involvement in combat sports since I was 12. That means paying to train with people who are learning how to jab and come off the power foot. If this were a year ago I'd be down but a year ago I was training with the man who retired Arturo Gatti in Long Beach. I'm not paying mad bread to dodge flailing hooks from either side because I forgot to mention that the heavy bags and end to end bag were a foot maybe two feet from each other. How am I supposed even remotely get footwork down with no room? Also... By nutritional advice they mean plugging meals into a tracking app... You could do that for free. Recorded mitt work? Bruh buy a tripod once and get a homie to go to cheesman with you for an afternoon. Save yourself 85 bucks. Every question was met with a condescending quip. I asked normal questions... Sparring, maybe moving up to level 2 faster and he straight up said that's an answer he doesn't give out you have to earn level 2...like bro... Cmon I'm not a fighter because I'm not going to front like I am but I'm trying to continiously improve and going back to jabs isn't going to do that. Not welcoming at all and the best ones in there (by best I mean could throw a solid a hook and stick a decent roll) were allegedly advanced. I just got to Denver and have been searching for a gym for a month because the ones in Denver proper are overpriced for what they have and offer. I think I finally found one with a great community awesome trainers who are actual fighters and have mixed level classes so those of us who are still coming up can learn from those who are more advanced. I don't know the owner personally and I'm sure if you're his friend he's great but as a mentor and trainer homie lacks empathy and walks around there with an ego like he owned TMTs doghouse. Be more welcoming, brother. People come to you to learn and improve their physique and health, not get sonned and condescended to. I'm all about getting the fire burning and being a competitor but this just came off as raw arrogance, which is intolerable unless you're over here holding a couple belts and taking warrior poses before PPV prize fights. I went to the all girls class on a Saturday with a coworker, and I will definitely be going back! I was intimidated when I walked in, because I've never boxed before, but the owner made me feel comfortable from the start, patiently teaching me the throws and allowing me to make mistakes. Great place to box. If you bring your own gloves and wraps, its only $5 per class! Great arm workout, dapples in squats and abs. An awesome way to squeeze in a good workout. As for the location, its a hard studio-nothing quaint or dainty about this place. read more
