I have been a member of CrossFit South Denver since 2016. The gym, coaches, and fellow members have become a significant part of my life. I continue my membership here because of the excellent coaching, the amazing relationships I've built there, and the overall welcoming environment. My relationship with my body and my fitness has changed A LOT over the years and I have been able to satisfy differing goals with the coaching and programming provided (including just making it in 2 times a week all the way to 5 or 6 days a week and competing). My favorite things about this gym: 1. The coaching: Excellent coaching for all levels. I am continually pushed as my skills advance and encouraged to work on my weaknesses. 2. The environment: I have dropped in to many gyms in the area and I truly feel that South has one of the best communities. I love that there is overall diversity in the membership and that the more elite athletes are not prioritized. 3. The programming: I appreciate that the programming is meant to improve overall long-term fitness (not just crush your soul) and is always easily scalable. I like the methodical approach with the coaches here. From Kyle Cook down. Get it right first (form, function, weight, whatever). They stop what they're doing to coach you separately so your doing your reps properly! I never feel stupid or slow.... tho I'm often the latter and occasionally, the former. I like the low key no-nonsense atmosphere. No attitude. Mostly, I like an engaged coach in the groups efforts. I've been to a couple CrossFit gyms (in Houston) where you came in, you left. I started at South Denver in the heart of the Pandemic and chose this gym because masks were required and got the impression that Kyle, the owner really cared about us and safety. I had been doing CrossFit for about 3 yrs previously and what I gained from that experience was my love and passion for CrossFit, not just fitness, but the 'community', the friends, the comps and the FUN. When I joined 'CrossFit' South Denver, I understood that there weren't any options for social events, at the time, but there was a 'competition' class and was told that there is a good 'community' in this gym. I also liked this gym for the high quality and experience of the coaches and figured I would 'sacrifice' the 'community' for the quality of coaching. I learned that for me this trade off wasn't worth it. Programming was very packed; everything was always rushed. I had asked Kyle why we only have 5 minutes to build to a 80-90% max, he said you either have it or you don't and he doesn't want people piddling around to get the work done. I lost a lot of confidence in lifting heavy, Classes are structured, rigid, serious and talking or having fun was not there. a BIG part of the CrossFit community is supporting other athletes, cheering them on during a heavy lift/skill, a high five after they get it, etc. I had tried that, a couple of times, once when someone was doing a back squat and I said 'drive' out loud, and was quickly shut down by Kyle, where he said "stop coaching, if you want to coach, go get your L1 and your L2 and come back to see me, but otherwise, do not coach in my gym" - Another student also heard this and he was shocked by it, and from that point, also he is afraid to say anything to anyone in the gym. There is a comp that is made for those of us who are not true 'RX' athletes called Festivus, Kyle actually laughed at me (instead of supporting me) for doing this comp, he says he hates it because it is not 'locally owned'. I was banned from posting anything about this on his FB page, but I did ask him about posting for local events, he said that was fine - until it wasn't. I posted a women's comp and was told to not post about anymore 'outside' comps. Well it turns out there was some past issues many years ago, with one person that I was not aware of, even though I had permission, this was another comp he had a problem with. After that, I realized this is not the program for me, I love CrossFit, and Kyle changed the name to South Denver FITNESS, they may do CrossFit style workouts, but they are not part of the community or have that kind of atmosphere in the gym. I was tired of being afraid to come into the gym and not having fun. Before I decided to make my switch, I looked on Instagram, at Ken Caryl, Wash Park, Decima, Omnia and Back Country CrossFit gyms - then compared to South, what you will notice is there is not one picture of anyone in the gym smiling, no group pics, no excitement over getting a new skill, no FUN - you will see B&W pics of people working out, but not ONE smile. I had signed a contract to save $20 a month thinking that Kyle was a good guy and that it is unheard of in this community to not let someone out of a contract let alone take them to collections over it which he threatened. I was wrong. I asked Kyle if he would let me out early and offered to pay him the back discounted amount, plus basically 2 full months and he release the remaining 3 months. He said, "I do contracts to hold people to them" - and then when on to personally attack me. His words - "Most people ease that eventually as the friction runs Coaches down. And the stubborn student wins. I've found an inner strength called context to fight every student that won't comply". Never thought I wasn't 'complying'. If you want a structured, workout with knowledgeable coaches, this is a good gym, but if you want to do CrossFit, be a part of the community, maybe some competitions, and simply have FUN IN THE GYM, this is NOT a place I would recommend. I've been to several CrossFit gyms, and a couple here in Denver, but I've been at CFSD for a few months now. CFSD's coaching and approach to health and fitness is exactly what everyone needs when working to better your physical fitness. The coaches teach mobilization and stretching before classes, and offer a yoga-style class on Thursdays. Their workouts are structured well and challenging enough to get you where you need to be, but the coaches encourage scaled workouts for beginners, people with long-term injuries, and even the CrossFit skeptics out there. The coaches put together several activities, group workouts, and fun competitions each month-some directed towards nutrition and others in lifestyle. The sense of community feels wonderful at CFSD. I've never been happier at a gym - highly recommend. read more

I've been going to CFSD for 9 years and have never had any desire to try another gym. Prior to CrossFit, I had never lifted a barbell in my life and realized right away that I loved weight lifting. Not going to lie, I started coming here already ingrained in my mind that I was going to hate Crossfit. I had recently moved here not knowing anybody and was brought here by a coworker who suggested that I use it as a way to meet some good new people. The community at this facility is unlike any other that I have been a part of, almost daily I am greeted with kind faces and encouragement. The coaches all bring something unique and vibe together incredibly well. I found myself steadily coming more and more often, partially because of the social climate of the space and partially because I was starting to see results and I was hooked. It took almost six months, but I am FINALLY able to do a pull-up. True to form, Kyle looked at me and said, "Great job, now go do it again." So I did. I'm visiting a friend in Denver and wanted to check out a box while I was here. I went in on Friday morning and Kyle was the coach. I advised him I was visiting from Oregon, so I'm not used to the altitude. He worked with me and encouraged me throughout the whole workout. There was only one other person in the class, so it wasn't too overwhelming. Overall it was a wonderful experience. I wanted to attend one more class while I was here but I ended up hurting my foot really bad the following day by misstepping on a curb! Totally ruined my first Colorado trip but that's another story. I do hope to visit in the future when I come back to visit my friend again! read more

For me, Xfit is a family affair. I've been working out with Kyle for years and when my daughter was injured playing soccer, Kyle helped rebuild her after surgery. His instruction is specific and tailored to individuals in the class. He takes the time to understand his people's goals and their fitness backgrounds and he uses that to personalize the workouts. The community is unsurpassed - the 5:30AM class is an eclectic and fun group for workouts. I couldn't be happier at this gym and Kyle's leadership is what makes it work. I'd heard the rep of crossfit being a chiropractors dream because so many people get hurt, so I went in for an intro class pretty skeptical. I did a one-on-one session with Kyle and he started by walking through the theory behind crossfit of long term, sustainable health and strength. I've been going for almost 3 months now and it's worth every penny. Trainers are easy to work with, but push you. They focus on form as much as intensity. They have been willing to go the extra mile while I learn the ropes and have never made me feel stupid for not knowing or doing something wrong. CrossFit South Denver is great. I started CrossFit here for the first time (about 8 months in now) and am loving it. Kyle (owner) is great to work with and creates a super health/positive atmosphere to workout in. My wife worked out there for quite some time but upon leaving for a different gym they retained our bank account information and for the past 4 months have continued to charge us. Very poor business practice. Each time we are charged we contact them let them know that it happenned and to fix it. Takes upwards of 2 weeks to get our money back and each time they day it will be fixed by next month. Maybe a poor review will light some sort of fire. read more

I love Crossfit. Okay - I'll be honest. I was a little intimidated to join a Crossfit gym. I am an outdoor enthusiast, but by no means a pro weightlifter. I never envisioned myself doing a clean and jerk, and was afraid of failing miserably. Heck, I can't even do one pull-up yet.. I went for a tour and signed up for a few elements classes at the Crossfit Denver location (Crossfit South Denver's affiliate gym owned by the same folks), and after talking with the owner Steve, I felt a lot more comfortable. The elements classes teach you how to work out without injuring yourself. And, if you're forgetful like me, trainers go over proper form before each Workout of the Day (called a WOD). I've been with the program for a few months, and I can already see and feel a difference. I still can't get an unassisted pull-up, but I'm getting really darn close. I can do a clean and jerk - which, by the way, feels like an awesome accomplishment. The workouts kick your butt, and after just an hour (which admittedly sometimes feels like longer) I feel like I've gotten a full day's workout in. Egos are checked at the door - these workouts are humbling!! The community is really supportive, and I never feel embarrassed about having to scale down weights or a workout. Bonus - since Crossfit Denver and Crossfit South Denver are owned by the same people (Steve and Clark), you can go to either gym with your membership. This really works out well for me, since one gym is closer to my work, and one is closer to home. read more

I have been a member at this gym for a year now so my review is a bit biased, but I love it here. I started out going to their free saturday classes and then as a new years resolution last January (2013) I decided to put the money forward and become a full-time member. If you become a member with CrossFit South Denver you also get the perks of being able to work out at two other locations: CrossFit Denver (1st & Lipan) and CrossFit 6th Avenue (6th & Sheridan) which is awesome. This specific location has a lot of space, and although some Saturday classes get packed (30+people) the coaches still do a great job of dispersing people, and explaining all of the movements. If you are wondering if CrossFit is for you, go to a few FREE saturday classes and then decide. (CrossFit South Denver offers two free classes every saturday at 9:30am and 10:30am and it is mostly body weight stuff you will be doing) read more

CrossFit South Denver is the answer to all of my fitness dreams! I have tried so many times to get into the gym and get my body in shape, but always lacked the motivation and willpower to get it done. I tried a CF box a year or so ago and hated it. The coaches were very focused on themselves and were not welcoming at all. I never went went back. When I had finally had enough, I started seeking out other CF gyms in the area and connected with Clark, the owner of CrossFit South Denver. I could tell right away that this was going to be a better fit, so I decided to give it a shot. I loved how welcoming everyone was, the coaches were in tune with my needs and abilities, and everyone was SO encouraging. The feeling after leaving my first workout was incredible. I've been attending CF South Denver for about 4 months now and have made such incredible strides with my fitness. I go 4-5 times a week and would probably go even more if I didn't know better (rest days are good for the body!). The coaches are very knowledgable and really work to help each individual person. I benefit from lots of one on one coaching, plus the encouragement and motivation offered by my classmates. The experience at CF South Denver is one of a kind! read more

They introduced themselves to me, and seemed to know everyone there - it really had a community feel to it. I started at CrossFit South Denver about a month ago. I took some time off of CrossFit after moving to Colorado and the coaches have been amazing at helping me getting back into it. The coaches are extremely knowledgeable and helpful with scaling options and ensure great technique to prevent injuries. The workouts are always challenging and I always leave feeling like I had a great workout. The gym members are super friendly and have made me feel welcome. I'm not the type to hit a gym but was getting to a point where I needed some sort of fitness routine between hiking and other outdoor activities I do. Friends suggested crossfit so I tried XFSD (Crossfit South Denver) since they offer free classes every Saturday at 9:30 and 10:30. It was perfect. Clark, the owner, and all of the other instructors really make you feel like you matter to them. The Saturday class is a great way to see what xfit is all about and usually the class can be quite large so if you're shy you can kind of blend in. The regular classes, should you sign up, are smaller. I don't care for running, I don't like weight machines, can't stand stationary cardio machines and the faux kickboxing classes (or any masculine wannabe-aerobics) aren't for me. Yet I love crossfit because it encompasses a variety of workouts and challenges that improve your health, strength and fitness without monotony. If you like fitness but hate working out in a typical weight lifting gym then you probably will like crossfit and the culture that XFSD fosters really makes it easy to enjoy. read more

I've been going to this gym for about two and a half years. When I first walked in a was in a walking boot from surgery. I had never been to a Crossfit gym and had no idea what to expect. Kyle was so helpful in adapting things for me to do while in the walking boot and once I got out of it. Everyone is always welcoming and it's a great environment to get a workout it. Moving to Denver and having never set foot in a crossfit gym before, I gave CFSD a try and haven't looked back since. Won't answer phone calls or texts. Sells groupon's and requires you to call and register but won't meet his end of the bargain to register you. I stop by the school and no one is around to talk to, but they are clearly open. I am not sure what is going on but I won't to beg them to take my money. There is a cross fit studio on every corner and plenty who have amazing customer service and make you feel welcome, not like you are begging them to sign up. They need to evaluate the way they treat new customers. I am quite shocked they have decent reviews, because from the way things went for me I expected them to have the worst reviews in town. read more

Crossfit South Denver is the epitome of a no "attitude" crossfit box!! The energy you find when you walk through the door is contagious. The trainers take the time to make sure you warm up, understand the movements and complete the workout without injury. Don't know how to squat clean or confused as to what a muscle up is? No worries...you will be taught proper technique and given plenty of scaling options. Curious to see what a "sweat angel" looks like? Intimidated because you are not in shape? That is the BEST thing about Crossfit South Denver....they will help push you to YOUR limit. Yes you will be "taxed" after your workout and sore the next day...but the experience you have at Crossfit South Denver will make you want to come back for more!!
