As someone who loves grocery stores, I was excited to shop at my first Tops. I am a Boomer of 70 visiting Rochester for the first time. I have to say I was not impressed with this store. It was quite clean and well lit. Prices were a bit eye-widening. It is difficult to get a feel for this store as I was not able to get a sense of the layout. I like this Tops because I'm a big dairy lover and their discount manager's special section lets me try ALL the dairy- on far right back of store. I think their produce isn't as great as Wegmans and slightly overpriced. The rest of the dried food section/pantry like things are good. bakery Goods are a little over sugary and cheap tasting. Meat section is ok but also not the best cuts of meat. There's a cute large geriatric population however, which makes this store quite charming to visit for the most part. Produce: Sometimes you get an ok deal but most of their cut fruit, and produce is a little over priced. May as well go to Wegmans to get better fresh things. Consider Walmart and price rite for better variety/price. Dried goods/pantry- carries larger variety of brands compared to Wegmans which has a monopoly. I think this allows buyers to try outside competition more however. There's good and bad. Bakery- unfortunately kinda cheap tasting. lots of conditioners and preservatives for same price as a Wegmans' loaf of bread. the bread just feels like it could be buried underground and survive 5 years later. Baked goods better at Wegmans. Discount dairy. this place wins. For sure. Milk is ok priced- Wegmans has cheapest milk in Rochester. You can find Creme fraiche for example which is hard to find in other places. Candy section- super cheap. lots of junk food here that are cheap. Prepared hot foods- ok as well. Parking lot has ample space but kind run down. Staff are overall ok. Not your cheeriest folks however. read more

I have visited many Tops stores, as I have Wegmans stores all over the state. The few franchised stores in existence are very well kept and managed as the stores in better neighborhoods. Other stores aren't quite as well kept or should I say managed? One thing that I lean strong on in stores is the customer counters. Where you can pay bills, purchase stamps, make exchanges, etc.. Many of the Tops stores are very slow, even with 2or3 employees behind the desk. This Tops here in my picture is one of the better, well run of their stores to me. read more

Stopped in the Clinton Avenue store in Rochester today and saw turkeys priced at $0.48 per pound and decided to stock up. Purchased 4. When I reviewed my receipt I found one was rung up at full price. Went to the customer service desk for a refund. The manager that "helped" me argued with me that it was a limit of one per customer. I told her that is not what the sign said. She was very rude and condescending and argued with me. When I told her that if they post a price they must honor it she said they would go by what their circular says. I got my refund, but it was handled absolutely terribly. It is no surprise that Tops stores keep closing. Wegmans has much better customer service. I should add that the cashier that helped me was excellent. On several occasions now I have stopped after work to pick up a few items, only to have only 1 cashier open, forcing us to use self checkout. Honestly I don't mind self check out for a few items w/bar codes, but not produce or if you have more than a few items as it's too much work! I went to their website to air my grievance and received a follow up phone message from store manager Patty (?) but when I called back twice to speak with her, she is unavailable. This is a review of the Market Fresh Cafe. If I didn't know any better I would swear that the cooks here were featured on Top Chef or something. Every single dish I've had is absolutely amazing. Their potato salad - YUMMERS! Their rotisserie chickens are well seasoned. They even got me to start eating lemon chicken again. (In most places they taste like you're eating seasoned lysol!) Every grab and go item is perfection. Their olive salad takes you back to the mediterranean. Their homemade hummus dip has me looking for bomb shelters. Their bean salad makes me want to find a checkered blanket and unfurl it in the middle of the parking lot for a picnic. TWO WORDS: BREAKFAST PIZZA They've got the best b-fast pizza in the game right now. Better than Wegmans. Better than Salvatore's. Better then anybody. HANDS DOWN. You want a fruit and veggie tray? TOPS-FRIENDLY MARKETS ON 1900 CLINTON AVENUE SOUTH I went to buy lottery tickets, on THURSDAY, March 9 2023 and I was getting excellent support from the customer service man. Then suddenly this big lady came behind their counter. She started playing with her upper body, scratching on her nasty hair, and playing with her nose. I tried to do my best to look away. But this nasty lady kept on until I would look in that direction so she could start up again. I am surprised TOPS as much food they handle they would hire somebody that nasty and I can to the conclusion that she lied on her application. She was pure fifty. I stopped quickly here while I was in the area. This is the first time I have been in this Tops. This store is leaps and bounds better than their Greece location. It was very clean and had so many options in their prepared areas. Typical of Tops I usually only shop their sales because they tend to be on the pricier side for non sale things. This Tops is right next door to my second favorite Chinese Restaurant, Golden Dynasty which makes for a convenient 0ne-two punch whenever I have a hankering for cilantro chicken AND need to pick up a few grocery items (seems I'm ALWAYS picking up a few items these days). Like most Tops these days, this store is looking a little bit run down, especially when compared to the mothership Wegmans in Pittsford. However, this is still one of the better run Tops & they do sport a few amenities that make a stop worthwhile. I've swung by here a few times to pick up lunch from the in-store deli after a friend raved about the Reuben Panini... something that Wegman's STILL hasn't found a way to ape. Plus, my family still loves Tops' pumpkin pies and the store brand complete pancake mix. Clientele can be very varied here... so don't be taken aback if you see a heavily tattooed & pierced gentleman walking around shirtless wearing a leather vest. I left Rochester in 1981. Ever since, when I visit, I go to Wegmans. During my visit last month, I went into a Tops. I will avoid Wegman's from now on if I can. Tops has the best selections and variety of products. Wegman's displays volume and sells its brand in quantity whereas I feel Tops offers quality and variety. If you want to capture market share, highlight your locations (you have a more subtle presence than Wegman's), and emphasize variety, for example you carry a good range of tomato sauces, and several are local. read more

I love their fried chicken at the hot food counter. Tops Market on South Clinton has the best fried chicken in Rochester. Go in late morning or early afternoon, by the evening most or all of the fried chicken will be gone. They make it fresh from scratch, the skin is crispy and delicious, the meat is tender and juicy. You might find a little residual oil on the bottom of the container but after all, it's fried. The "better" sit down restaurants in town that have fried chicken on the menu make horrible fried chicken. It never fails, no matter the restaurant, it is over cooked, dry and the skin is like chewing tasteless flour rocks. Try Tops. Your mileage may vary. read more

They will try and sell you bad, inferior fruit. Beware when buying produce here, Tops will cheat you it they think they can get away with it. Bought peaches that looked perfect on the outside, but dry and crumply when eating. Had to throw most of them out they were so terrible. The worst peaches i ever ate in a very long time!! Very angry and frustrated wasted my money when the fruit was obviously terrible and uneatable. I guess the manager of the Tops on East Ridge Road in Rochester, New York doesn't care if the fruit is bad and goes ahead and sells anyway, attempting to get rid of it. If it were Tops Friendly Parakeets, it'd be a much interesting - and louder- store. I was here for bananas and a drink about a month ago, just after I went to Rita's and the bank across the parking lot. It's pretty nice. Definitely one of the nicer Tops I've been to and with nice service too. This is not a bad Tops. They are in a lovely clean plaza with a great bank and a wonderful Rita's. The funny thing is that their loudspeaker announcements can be heard in every corner of the Plaza, even if you're like, a quarter of a mile away from Tops. It's quite interesting. If you're down in Brighton-Henrietta, it's a decent place to shop although I still prefer Wegmans. It's better than most Tops though. read more

I usually shop at Trader Joe's, Wegman's & now Costco. This Tops location was open 24hrs & right on my way home so I thought I'd grab a few things. I was surprised to find such a small selection of fruits and veggies. Most of what I normally buy is not available here. It's more like a small neighborhood grocer I suppose. I was shocked to see how much they charge for things like non-organic avocados ($2.50 Each!) and a few other items. Especially considering the competition in this area. Overall I spent twice as much as I normally do for less groceries. I was also disappointed to see my cashier shame and embarrass the woman in front of me in line for using coupons. read more

This is not my usual grocery shopping spot, but there are occasions when I'm in the Brighton area and this is a convenient stop to pick up a couple things while out running errands. They usually have everything I need, but since I'm not used to the store layout, it ends up taking twice as long to get what I need. I end up walking the entire store 2-3 times because produce and dairy products are at opposite ends and lining the left and right side of the store. As far as things that are good about Tops, they have *all* the brands. It's nice to pick up some of those specific brand items if and when you need them. Definitely a large array of options from everything to Ziploc brand to every tortilla brand you could imagine. The downside is that the prices on many of these things are a little higher than you'll find elsewhere. Only a small difference, but somehow I end up spending more than I usually would (yes, I'm a Wegmans brand lover). The other struggle is that their produce tends to be less than fresh - there's always something half rotten in the mix or wilted leaves in the bunch. First world problems, I know. Still, if I'm spending $3-4 on cilantro I'd like it to make it through a couple days till I make the recipe. Their cheese selection is also lacking - I had a really hard time finding a good crumbled goat cheese. In general, very few local area farms/products represented. read more

An okay Tops. I am not really sure who actually shops at Tops when Wegmans is so close and amazing. I have only come here to get strawberries when Wegmans ran out and to get some gift cards. The store is always a bit dark seeming and dirty. I have never really been that impressed here. Staff is always scarce making it difficult to ask about items and making the lines to cash out long so don't come if you are in a hurry. Overall, blah. I prefer Wegmans. For the most part, Tops is not my favorite supermarket in the whole world, especially when there are so many other amazing options in Rochester. That said, the one on S. Clinton Ave holds a special place in my heart. They recently renovated the parking lot and the outside making it much more easily accessible compared to what it used to be, and more importantly for me they have several products on their shelves that you can't find at the other major competitor in Rochester. It's true the items I'm talking about are more unique, but sometimes that's exactly what you need - whether it be that passion fruit jam, or those Guittard baking chips. Not only that, with the recent updates they've greatly expanded their cheese section! It's all organized very nicely in the left side of the store near the bakery and it's way easy to navigate to find those cheeses that are just right for you. Finally, the biggest plus that I seem to find here that I don't find with some of their competitors is that their produce is always ripe and ready for using or munching on. At a lot of other supermarkets, you'll usually find the right produce, but you'll have to wait a few days to actually eat it because it will need to ripen. But not at Tops! If you buy it here, chances are you'll be able to have it the day of without having to wait those extra days. All in all, another A-OK choice in the stormy supermarket sea of Rochester! read more

I like Tops. There is everything that you can find in a regular supermarket or grocery store. Desserts, pre-cooked homemade meals, baking materials, etc. There are breads, fresh fruit, and also cereal. You can check out your own stuff by yourself using the self-service machines. There are also some people standing around to help you if you need assistance. It's great. Yes, they do card you if you buy liquor. read more

Tops is 6 minutes of a drive closer than my regular supermarket, thus I only come here when I need to. The store attracts a diverse and interesting clientele, although it is usually pretty empty when I've gone. Some things I come here for: Beer: however, the selection is average. Better than CVS/Walgreens, not as good as Wegmans. Poultry: they have a tiny Kosher meats section where there is fresh chicken that I actually prefer That thing you need: "Oh sh...ucks! Baking soda?! I was excited when I walked into this Tops and saw a whole bin full of McIntosh apples (the only apples that don't irritate my stomach), however I was a bit weary because the week before a nice apple farmer at the Public Market said that they are currently out of season and that if I do find any they will probably be pretty old. Even though these apples looked a little larger & more red than usual, I just figured that Tops must have the inside scoop on where to purchase McIntosh off season. BIG MISTAKE! I really try not to go there it's scary at times. The prices are good and I find lots of good deals. My last trip there was a killer . Went to this Tops location to look for Non-GMO and organic products. Wasn't too hopeful, but so surprised to find a nice corner of the store that had it all in one spot! Even the frozen items! Included gluten free, so what a find! I'm giving it a 4 and not 5 because when I was checking out, the cashier opened up with a cookie in hand, eating as she started ringing up customers. I never go to tops, and today when I decided to give them a chance because they were on my way home I remembered why. I only needed one item, veggie based better than bouillon. Every flavor was labeled the same price, $4.99 for an 8oz jar. This is $1 more than it is at Wegmans, but I was willing to pay the difference for the convenience of not having to go out of my way. I get up to the register and it rings up as $6.49. The girl at the register was very nice and offered to do a price check, since it's not busy and we are right next to the aisle we got it from we said we would go double check the tag before she bothered anyone. Sure enough all flavors are very clearly labeled as $4.99, so we go back and ask her to call the manager because I am surely not paying double what I would pay at Wegmans when the shelf is clearly labeled only $1 more. We wait with the light flashing for a while with no response before the girl pages him over the intercom. He finally calls her on the phone and tells her to tell us that the veggie is more expensive than the other flavor bases. Are you freaking kidding me right now?!?! So I tell the poor girl who is now stuck playing the middle man to tell him that they are all labeled as the same price, $4.99. He quickly abandons that lie and has her tell us that there has been a price change. Guess what, I don't care if there was a price change, as a manager it is your job to execute that price change to completion, including changing the price tags. If you forgot to change the tags that's your fault, not mine, and you sell it for the price it is labeled as. Mind you, he couldn't be bothered to actually come talk to us in person at all, just made this poor girl convey all of his bullshit. I suggest you train your managers better or hire some new ones, maybe promote the girl who was actually trying to do the right thing. Either way you won't ever have my business again, but maybe it will save you from losing more. read more
