I've been here before but never got around to writing a review, glad we stopped in recently! I used to think, since it's a Co-Op, it was only for members. But that's changed (or maybe I just misunderstood!), and now anyone can shop here. Prices are a bit higher about $2-$5 more than other grocery stores depending on what you're getting, also know you're supporting a community focused, local business. It's not a huge place, but they've got a solid selection of essentials, and some nice specialty items too. There's even an outdoor area if you want to relax with a snack or a drink. Staff is pleasant, friendly and helpful. They have private parking lot! I'll definitely be back. read more

I am so excited, to have found this place. Today was my first visit. It's nice and clean, they have great grocery selections, they also have pre-prepared foods, all my favorite staples. It's a bit of a drive for me, but worth it. The staff were so pleasant, kind, and patient. I have a disability, and Richard took his time to explain everything to me. You can just go in and shop, or you can join the co-op. I joined, there are a lot of benefits, including discounts, events, they want to hear from you, and suggestions. It's in the South Wedge. A great neighborhood, and it's decorated outside and has some amazing murals so you can't miss it. I wish I had thought to take pictures. Will do it next time. Bring your own bags. Parking was easy. The aisles are nice and wide. They have small baskets that roll, making it really easy for someone with disabilities to shop. Their meat section is all frozen, which is fine. I bought frozen wild salmon. They have a big sausage section, with some delicious sounding ingredients. I will have to get some next time. read more

I really enjoy the selection of bulk foods/ spices. I like bringing my own containers for bulk to cut down on packaging garbage. The prices for organic produce and local, pasture raised eggs are fair. The prices for bulk products, which are mostly organic, can beat "regular" pre-packaged, non-organic supermarket wares. The prices for a box of organic breakfast cereal is super. The service is friendly and competent. I find Abundance to be an excellent shopping experience. read more

Definitely worth stopping by if you are in the area. It's very clean and well lit. I like that there isn't so many options to choose from. It make shopping very simple and less stressful. They have a great selection of health foods and produce. The staff here are quite friendly and talkative. I'm always on the lookout for fun natural foods co-ops and I was pleasantly surprised to find one tucked right in South Wedge within a walking distance of my work place. A Co op, first to be explained, is owned by the community. Anyone can buy a stake in the company and then come to board meetings unlike more bureaucracy run businesses that may only have stakes given to a select few. Different co ops exist based on what they are selling; this one is one for natural foods. You can pay 100$ one time fee to be such a stake holder, and enjoy some fun stake holder perks but if you're someone like me who just enjoys supporting the community through buying goods, then that works too! There's a fun hot foods bar w/ sitting area, and parking is recommended to be in the back to be by the door. The staff are a funky artsy crew with rocking hair styles and a very hang out neighborhood how's your day goin' kinda vibe. Because co ops are small, cozy, and community owned, they tend to carry smaller niche boutique things that may not be as available in larger stores. Abundance carries local cheeses, dairy, produce, grains, and some of their dry foods are fun natural selections that may be found tucked away in some Whole Foods thing. I love their sales that change out every 2 weeks because it allows me to try out different products that I may have overlooked. For example, as in my photo, I can now foster my love of sustainable fancy chocolates with the subsidized funds. A new chocolate line goes on sale every 2 weeks and my personalized favorites that run as smooth as a Belgian chocolate of 19 microns cocoa powder are Theo and Equal Exchange. Their coffee selection is pretty fun; I do wish they carried more tea brands and varieties; they have a small selection in terms of brands but carry a lot of varieties within then. If you don't like the lines, then you're kinda stuck, but at least Good Leaf Tea company down the street's got your back for high end teas. The kombucha section is always rocking some deal. The dairy section is really fun to try out local upstate cheeses. The produce section showcases some funky local produce you may not even see in the weekend public market in downtown Rochester. Prices are a little higher on this end in relation to their dry goods but it's natural and heritage in variety! Also, if you browse the fun racks, you may be able to find secret stuff like Teff flour that they use in Ethiopian Injera. They also sell fun arts and crafts from local artists right by the check out section. I particularly love the soaps and cosmetics section; I love trying lotions and local natural products. I truly believe in investing in aromatherapy into the soaps/products you use. Your dermis is the largest organ you have and it absorbs whatever you put on it. So, you may as well feed It good stuff. read more

The co-op is a nice alternative to the chain stores in the area. Walk in to the natural food store smell (which I love, some kind of essential oil does it I think), it's a more spacious area than their previous location. My favorite part is the bulk food section - I usually get rolled oats, cashews, nutritional yeast (nooch), lentils, walnuts, granola, etc. You can bring your own jars (they will weigh your jar before you fill it up so they have the tare weight for checkout). Really nice if you're into minimizing your waste! There's also extensive spices in bulk, coffee, nut butters, shampoo and body wash, oils, soy sauce, maple syrup... even a 4-Lb block of tofu! There's also prepared/grab & go foods and a hot bar at certain times.Some packaged items are definitely cheaper elsewhere - you can always compare for yourself (I sometimes check the Wegmans app while I'm in the co-op and sometimes the co-op has better deals - it depends!) We became members because it's a $100 charge ONE TIME. Then you're members for life. You get 10% off once a month - plus other perks such as being able to help make decisions and collecting dividends. I see many of the same faces each time I go (probably because I always go on Monday afternoons), everyone is nice and very helpful. It seems like a very inclusive place to work - I see some of the employees displaying their preferred pronouns with their nametag. read more

I'm loving the new, larger store! When I'm in the area, I will stop here to pick up some of my local favorites. I was on the hunt for a few specific local products like hot sauce and Stuart's Spices. They had Seven Bridges Farm beef. I picked up some ginger and some snacks and chips, gluten free items. The list goes on. If you bring jars or your own containers, you can use the bulk section to fill up on all sorts of things. They get produce from local farms, they source a lot of their dairy from local farms, as well as their meats. It's great! There's even a cafe and some prepared items to choose from, including coffee. Lots of upgrades that make this a wonderful neighborhood store. Being a member of the co-op has its advantages too. I'm not one at the time, but it's worth looking into it, especially if this is your regular grocery stop. The new store is bright and spacious, there's lots to choose from and it's in a great location on South Ave. There's a parking lot too in the back. You can pull in on Averill or Hamilton. read more

Wish I had a coop like this close to my home! Prices are great and there are lots of deals. The produce section wasn't super stocked, especially regarding fruit but it's enough to get by on. I've always loved shopping here. There's always a wide variety of options, and all the brands they carry are great quality (but not wildly expensive). They have products that support all sorts of dietary needs. I've been very impressed with how they've been handling the COVID19 crisis. They have a cleaning station for all customers as they enter the building, and the staff is disinfecting services often. On top of that, even though everyone has masks on, the staff is extremely warm, helpful, and friendly. Great job, Abundance! read more

A-OK is exactly how I would describe this place. I visited Abundance and it is a lovely little coop. It is pretty small and I am sure I have been spoiled by the Lexington Coop in Buffalo. That being said, I will probably try to visit this coop every time I come to Rochester. I came to Abundance looking for a specific product, Teese, the manufacturer of which said I could find it at Abundance. They don't carry it, which was disappointing, but I did many items my own coop doesn't carry. Several of the items come from Ithaca, which is exciting, and I was dazzled by the vegan raw cheesecake slices they have in their prepared section. As someone who does most of my grocery shopping at my hometown coop, Abundance doesn't stand out. Most things were familiar, and given how small the space is, it was interesting to see what things they stock and don't stock. I did get some vegan jerky and a box of vegan scallops, both of which can't be found at my own coop. I wish I had grabbed a package of vegan dumplings but I'll have to do that next time I am in town. I hear they are looking for a bigger space and I hope they find one and that they thrive. read more

Thank goodness for the Abundance Co-op! First I love the fact that they have a bulk section where you can use re usable glass jars. They have food items that cater to my dietary needs that I can't find at Wegmans. and Wegmans has a pretty big selection. My nemesis is the body care section. Bye bye money! But so worth it. Between the oils and unique products my hand basket is always full. I often run all my errands downtown in one shot on a Saturday, and I love that they have a small cafe area that I can run in and get a quick snack or lunch. The employees are great, very helpful. I enjoy shopping at this little co-op. The prices are slightly better than Lori's (due to the structure of a co-op) and I find the layout a little easier to navigate. I agree with everything Peter V. had to say about it - great bulk and great selection overall. They also have a great selection of meat for the conscious consumer. I'm mostly vegetarian-easing-away-from-being-pescatarian (a lot of my cheating is documented on yelp...) due to the way meat is produced in this country and it's nice to know that if I absolutely need a steak, I can partially ease my guilt with a free-range, grass-fed, hormone-free, local ribeye. It comes with a hefty price tag but I'm glad to see it reflects the true cost of raising an animal. I haven't had to buy any meat yet, but knowing that the option is there is comforting. Customer service is also fantastic. I purchased hummus a few months back discovered a small colony of mold when I opened the seal that night. When I brought it back the next day and showed the cashier, he was just as horrified as I was and gave me a cash refund without even batting an eye. Don't let the mold deter you from going here - I'm confident this was an isolated incident! read more

Abundance is the place to go for natural and organic foods in Rochester! Admittedly, it's a little small, but this means you can get in and out rather quickly, instead of getting sucked in by a free sample and then spending the next ten minutes looking at all the cheeses of the world (I'm looking at you, Wegmans). This is my main stop for the week's groceries, though I do go to Wegmans for specialty hummus and sea salt and caramel ice cream and to farmer's markets for my produce needs. In addition to the basic organic staples of packaged foods, frozen food, and produce, as Jeannine K. notes, they have an excellent selection of bulk foods. This is a great way to be friendly to the environment and your wallet. Bring a container from home, get its tare weight before you fill it, and then get cereal, beans, rice, peanut butter, dish soap, banana chips, curry cashews (YES!), or whatever else you'd like. Another form of bulk they offer is bulk ordering. So, if you walk in and notice an amazing sale on almond milk, you can go up to the service counter and order a case or five and stock up at a really great price. Abundance is also a member-owned cooperative, so anyone can shop and take advantage of the sales and good deals on bulk, but, if you become a member, your purchases count towards the annual dividend rebate and you also can have a "make your own discount day" where you get 10% off all the non-sale items you buy that day (as S.B. mentions). read more

I am not vegan nor vegetarian, but I try to eat healthy meals, and local products as much as possible. This little store helps me with that! It's conveniently located, almost halfway between my house and my work. It has decent hours, so I don't have to rush to get there. And the people are always friendly. A great place to stock up on the basics, as I run out during the week my only issue is that it is small, and the selection is limited, but when I need coconut milk and I am in a hurry, this is where I first stop! read more

POSITIVES: The take-away chicken tortellini soup (so nourishing and addictive!), the vegan/gluten free chocolate brownies in the front case (secret ingredients include coconut flour, pumpkin, and coffee?!), the friendly staff, relatively easy parking, eat-in area inside and tables set up outside. NEEDS IMPROVEMENT: The pre-made sandwiches in the front case. The bread on the pesto turkey sandwich was so soggy that there was water collecting in the bottom of the packaging. I returned one and gritted my teeth through the second, not wanting to be a total pain, but the manager should've offered me a refund and pulled all of the remaining sandwiches. At $7 a pop, this is not acceptable. Check the packaging before you buy. read more

This is one of my favorite co-op martets that I have been to. I was here over the summer and did all of my bulk shopping for the summer. I also went today for some bulk essentials. The bulk is great here. It is a small space but it is efficiently used in order to have a great selection. I dare say the best in Rochester. There is dry bulk (beans, grains, fours, pastas, nuts, seeds, prepared snacks), bulk spices, bulk teas, bulk nut butters (peanut butter, almond butter, tahini), and liquid bulk (liquid soap, shampoo, etc.). The entire store is efficiently stocked to have a great selection of everything you could want. There is a great selection of vegan and vegetarian products but it is not exclusively so. The produce all looked beautiful and had a lot of local seasonal produce. I love that the produce is right as you walk in, it makes everything feel so vibrant. There is a great selection of natural vitamins, herbs, and supplements. This is a perfect place for all your natural food needs. If I lived in Rochester, I would be a member and this would be my go to place for shopping. Good wholesome food with super nice employees, can't beat it. read more

Produce is priced exceptionally well for organic. Cute, non-food items/books in the back. Local produce and dairy is really good. Everything is clearly labeled. Bulletin board for business information exchange. Bulk section is great. You can special order items. Digital, monthly newsletter. Annual shareholders picnic. Cons: Store is small so the selection is limited, but they still do a decent effort at ordering. Juice bar is a disappointment. Takes really long to get a warm juice (no ice). Not even sure if they are still doing that. Better to just get the produce and juice at home. Meat is pricey (and frozen) - you can get better choices of hormone-free meat that is fresh at the local farmer's markets. Staff is always super friendly, but occasionally you'll get someone at the register who doesn't know what they are doing. Sometimes you have to tell them you are a member, because they don't always ask. And if your order isn't logged into your account, it affects your end of year total/dividend. Still, I gotta give 'em five stars. Because it's a co-op!! Everyone should join Abundance. read more

Then, when she finally finished chatting, she decided to help a different customer who came minutes after I had been standing there already. I found this place when staying at the Holiday Inn Downtown. I was looking for a good grocery store that carried vegan options and took a gamble at walking the 20 minutes. I am SO glad I went! It is almost hidden with a back entrance facing residential houses, but I managed to find it thanks to the large "Natural Food Store" sign painted on the building. I had some of their freshly prepared vegan eggplant peanut soup, and bought organic apples, grapes, and other produce. Fresh and delicious! Friendly staff as well. read more

I've been shopping at Abundance for years and always find new things to try. The selection and quality of the produce is excellent. Today I bought a beautiful eggplant and perfectly ripened tomatoes along with a loaf of Three Seed Semolina Bread from Flour City Bread Company, all the makings for a simple, healthy meal. I won't list all of my other grocery purchases but I filled my canvas bag with a variety of great vegan options for a reasonable price. One of my favorite things about Abundance however is that I can always find a variety of take out vegan food, which really isn't easy in Rochester. Today they had two kinds of dumplings, three noodle dishes, salads, a tofu wrap and my favorite, the tempeh ruben. As a person who's usually forced to order a salad in a wrap at many many restaurants (aside from The Owl House or Red Fern) I can't tell you what a treat it is to find good, reasonably priced vegan food in this city. I love Abundance. I started coming here because it's closer than Wegmans and I don't drive, but now it's my first choice. It is a small store, but I find that the variety is really good, and the quality is excellent. LOVE the bulk section. LOVE that pretty much everything is organic, fair trade, ethically raised (though I don't eat meat, and I almost never eat eggs or dairy). LOVE the friendly environment, store workers who recognize me, seeing other customers at farmers' markets, etc. It's true that it is expensive. I'm living on a grad school stipend, so I do have to be price-conscious, as well as just conscientious. I've started getting most of my food from the Good Food Collective, which is $25/week, and supplementing the veggies I get there with bulk foods from here, occasionally splurging on some veg-meats or almond milk gelato, and it usually comes out in the $20-30 range, so ~$50/week. That's amazing, I think, for an ethical and mostly local diet. read more

Just had the absolute worst experience at Abundance. My 12 lb Boston terrier and I live right around the corner and we loved to walk there, quickly grabbing a few items and leaving. My Boston terrier is a well behaved, emotional support animal, with a certified letter that I carry with me at all times. She and I have been going there the last year and I have ALWAYS held onto her; never allowed her to walk on the floors as I understand not everyone is comfortable around animals. My dog and I have always felt welcome there; with a sign on the door to the affect of, "We Welcome Everyone" and no other associate in the last YEAR having an issue with my dog being in my arms....until today. Like any other day, I quickly walked in to grab an item (with my dog in my arms) and was stopped by a man named, Pete. Pete stated, "only service animals are welcome in CO-OP" and when I explained to Pete she was an emotional support animal and asked him if he would like to see my certified letter, he said no. Pete then proceeded to make a back handed comment and say, "I think service animals and emotional support animals are different. But I'll let it go." I was so taken back, as no other associate has EVER said a word to me about it before. Pete then made me feel so belittled for having my dog with me; Pete then proceeded to make it sound like he was doing me a favor by allowing me to buy the one item I came on for. I asked if Pete was a manager, and confirmed he said he was. Having worked in customer service for over 15 years, I have never been made to feel so ashamed during a 3 minute grocery store transaction. Prior to today, I was considering being a shareholder. But after this experience, I will NEVER be shopping there again. I try and support local business's but places like Wegmans, Target, and Walmart have no issue with my dog being with me. read more
